IKEA has mastered the “Gruen effect.”
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
Researchers estimate that 50 percent of purchases are unplanned. These purchases, especially impulse buys, present an opportunity for retailers who can entice consumers to deviate from their shopping lists.
One of the most effective ways to influence this is through a store’s architecture. In the 20th century, the architect Victor Gruen, who pioneered the first American shopping malls, used light and space to dramatically stage goods in storefront windows. His designs were meant to capture the attention of passersby - and convert them into customers. This conversion became known as the “Gruen effect.”
Watch the video above to learn how Ikea has mastered the Gruen effect with a carefully designed store layout that gets customers to travel further distances… and buy more.

Victor Gruen's early work was prolific. Some consider his indoor shopping mall the greatest building design of the 20th century. You can learn about the mall's history as a social space, and why Gruen ultimately turned against his grand vision in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oooVC3zfDc8.html _Carlos W.

Another trick shops often use is to actually use a certain fragrance that smells appealing to you (like meatballs) just to trigger hunger in you. The disturbing thing is that it is not the actual food that smells good, it is the fragrance! My tricks are to never go to a shop hungry because then I will buy everything I see, and to not look around when you are going from one item on the list to another (if you are crossing the shop). They are so good at distracting you!

Sounds like good advice until you actually try it and see how the logic fails. When hungry and going grocery shopping you will probably have more impulse purchases. On the other hand, going grocery shopping when you aren't hungry and still full does the opposite of shopping hungry. The result is less food purchased because you were full and then you realize that you didn't buy enough food.

That's what I really hate about Ikea. The only time I went I wanted one thing and instead of being able to get it and go, I had to go through the entire maze which was a big waste of my time.
@modgal

Yeah it's quite annoying, even with the shortcuts. The only time it's quick is when the item is in the market hall / self service area coz that's right before the checkouts.

I love IKEA. I like the path through the store. I like the modern style. I saw the picture of the roof covered in solar PV panels (Round Rock, TX location) and love that IKEA shares my values about the environment. Sadly, I haven't been to an IKEA in over 5 years because I live on the south side of Houston now and would have to drive an hour to the nearest one. And, I don't really need anything. But I would love to just walk through the store and take a break for some meatballs.

The early versions of the IKEA maze had a minotaur to drive sales of items that could be used as improvised weapons. During those times standing lamps and knives were the most common impulse purchases.

Interestingly in Hong Kong, due to the heat at times in the year, people spend their whole weekends (or at least almost a full afternoon) at IKEA because of their air con, and that it takes years to get around, that too.

I have a solution if you are ready to hear. Do not take credit card with you to the store. Leave it safe in the car. Take cash to the store. Just enough to cover your need. It will develop your mind and money discipline. NO thanks to American Express (AMEX) credit card for not sponsoring this thought.

That guy they are interviewing is just saying something for the sake of saying something. It is rather senseless. I mean, of course it is not "coincidence" there is a restaurant at IKEA. Of course they build that on purpose. It is not as if one day all employees walked in and a restaurant has spawned. Low quality content this video is.

I once spent 2 hours in an IKEA looking for one item. The workers could not direct me to where it was and neither could the little kiosks. I ended up going to a different one out of frustration, found it in 10 minutes. So that comment on "catering to both" made me laugh harder than it should have.

AX System honestly, I’d say no. Even in Canada, we don’t have too many Ikeas. However, when they first came here it was a huge craze and everyone was lining up for them, but now it’s kind of just a regular store only for some people. I personally don’t like it because it’s way too big (it’s a literal maze) and it’s so easy to get lost, it aggravates me just trying to find something.

IKEA is also sequenced to go through the cycle of life. Dorm room > first apartment > first house > children’s furniture > then you take a break to eat before go down and get the smaller things in kitchen, bedding, bathroom, and little filler things. Then there is warehouse and checkout. So even if you skip through the cycles you still have to go downstairs and run through everything else. It is almost inescapable.
