How i'm going to improve MY landscape photography - Blea Tarn, The Lake District
Join me on day 1 of my 2 day trip to the Lake District. Starting at the stunning Blea Tarn we had a fantastic morning with amazing light..
I started this trip fully determined to improve my landscape photography. I wanted to change my approach to capturing my images and move away from all my bad habits, hopefully enabling me to develop my skills as a landscape photographer.

Never seen one of your videos before. That monologue without one break in your train of thought was....very refreshing compared to everyone else's choppy vlog style editing. Just sub'd. I have dabbled in landscape on and off over time and one tip I'd suggest to help what you were talking about is trying to get the composition as minimalist as possible. I know that helped me really slow down and take my time. Instead of firing off 5 or 10 shots in a location, I'd walk away with may 2 or 3 shots at most that had very balanced compositions, minimal distractions, and bang on exposure.

Good vlog. Classic location was there a few weeks back quite boggy and you definitely had better light. Really liked the first shot. Agree 're taking time, but sometimes with light changing quickly you do have to rush just to make sure you get something. Nice bonus with Coniston

Hi Gareth - I doscovered your channel fairly recently and have been really enjoying it, and feeling inspired to get out camping (next summer - I'm not crazy!!). Sound advice Gareth we all tend to rush, I know I'm guilty and must slow down and think about it more, it's the only way to improve. Love Blea Tarn I was there earlier this year and hope to be back there in June next year, would like to visit the Lake District more often but it's a long way from Cornwall. Cracking images, I think you are being hard on yourself, if your not a landscape photographer your doing a damn good impression.

ooooohhhhh.... yes, this is a fun one!! ive tried!! its near impossible!! well i struggled.. to find any comp to fit this!! even examples i found didnt seem to fit the idea they were talking bout.. or maybe i misunderstood their explanation! - plus it really makes it hard work! although i do agree with the theory! i balances well.. but only to the trained eye, i think anyway. Thanks tho!! perhaps ill do a vid trying this again! :-)

You’re the ‘master of the monologue”, I’m impressed that you get it in one take, where most vloggers must do it multiple times if the jerky edit is anything to go by. Was there a Smurf convention you were attending after the shoot 🤣

Amazing location Gareth. The images you captured where of an other level of quality, superb. I found your talk about slowing down very helpful and interesting. Andy it's a while since I've left comments as life has been pretty hectic recently but I just wanted to say another fantastic informative VLOG. Fences into lakes are to stop animals from walking around the end of the fence/wall especially when the water level drops a bit. Common practice and a handy source of leading lines for photographers over the years.

It really is a great location Gareth and hoping to see you return there. I’ve been once and set out to do something different. It’s very easy to fall into the rock in the foreground, Langdale Pikes in the background image but there is a reason it’s shot so many times and that’s because it works. Beautiful image at Coniston. Looking forward to your Wast water trip. Will you shoot the iconic image though there? I will have to see. Good vlog matey, take care for now 👍👍

Hi Gareth, brilliant framing and exposures. Just comparing these shots to some of your earlier work, yes you have improved with your composition but you have always had a good eye. But there is something missing and I think you know what it is, Fuji colours! The Sony is a fantastic camera but the colours...... a bit odd. The only way I can describe it is it looks like a picture you would get on a jigsaw albeit high quality. There is great female Canadian photographer who frames beautiful pictures but her results shot on Sony are more like postcards. There is a flatness to the profile. Canon is always clean but a little opaque. Nikon sharp but over contrasty. I have used and enjoyed most cameras over the years. All fab cameras but there is something about Fuji, a little bit of magic. How is that for a technical analysis! I think your pictures will be great with whatever kit you use. There isn’t a bad camera out there now so in the end it is down to personal eyesight and taste. Keep it up. Gary

Hey Gary! If im honest i 100% agree.. i struggle hugely editing the sony files! as good as that sensor is for my day to day work, its a perfect camera (ignoring ergo and evf res) but yeah the colours wreck me!! no depth.. no tone.. and skin tones are yellow or green...... sooooooo.... i bought another fuji again haha... my landscapes will now be with the XT3.. although i only have the 12mm and 16-55 atm as i sold them all before! ill get them back soon tho :-) thanks for the honest and valued feedback mate!! hugely appreciated! :-)

Gareth Danks You have made a lot of photographers very happy. I am not a fan boy of any company and have no brand loyalty but after trying nearly every brand over the decades I could only live with Fuji or a Nikon D850 (maybe. D500).

Great images from a wonderful location, I adore Blea Tarn. In fact, if this was last Sunday morning, I was pretty much right next to you and I heard your drone go up 😂 I stayed round there all day, leaving the tarn and going up Lingmoor Fell, which is to your right as you face the tarn. I made it back down for another glass still shot or two at sunset!

Firstly I've got tripod envy, that looks a beast but I guess it has a beast price tag to go with it! Secondly, wow, what amazing conditions you got at Blea Tarn. Some absolute belting images mate, portfolio quality. Thirdly (this could go on...😂) I'm with you on the slowing down and taking time stuff, I'm totally guilty of taking images for the sake of it and not focussing on getting just one or two quality images you are really happy with. I mentioned the same thing in my latest vlog. Fourthly (lol is that a word!!) that sunset at Coniston...stunning. Right done now...👍

haha!! great comment Jamie!! made me laugh!! yeah its quite expensive but i hate cheap gear! especially tripods!! cheap compared to the Gitzo i wanted to get lol.. and just as good from what i can see!! super happy with it! Yeah the conditions were fantastic!! i nearly cried when the wind picked up tho haha.. glad it calmed down! ill make a huge effort to be calm and use the single image approach! if that doesn't work i give up! haha thanks for watching mate!! :-)

Blea Tarn...my favourite body of water in the UK. 2:21 what an amazing POV and scene. 5:36 them rocks have been placed there, I'm sure. (not saying you did it :)) Good comments on the art of photography. What an awesome ending. Enjoyed that. Cheers.

Beautiful shots Gareth. I am sometimes puzzled though when I hear photographers who limit themselves to one shot of a composition when light is subject to change. How do you determine when the light will be best if you limit to one shot? What if you take it and then light changes to even better? I do agree with slowing down and trying to get it right in one shot but limiting to only one shot if light gets better really seems odd to me. Galen Rowell, a famous photographer (no longer living) always said about this, "If it looks good shoot it, if it looks better shoot it again." Galen used film so shots were expensive but his philosophy makes sense to me. I've shot light that I thought was wonderful and five minutes later became amazing. Would you really just take the first shot? By the way, I'm not meaning to be critical here but this always puzzles me. I enjoyed the video and your shots were wonderful. I'd put that place high on a list to return in different seasons.

Hey Philip! thanks for the comment mate! i had the same comment (off the video) from @juianbaird asking basically the same thing and yes i 100% agree! i didnt explain myself very clearly.. i literally meant the composition! theres no way i can know if that one shot is going to be the best of the light! but if im 100% sure my tripod is in the best place i can them keep firing as and when! the film analogy is to remove the thought that i can snap move snap move etc.. non are ever right when ive done that before! - i hope that helps explain it better! thanks for the question Philip! ill definitely be back in the snow!! :-)

Hi Gareth. I've never seen Blea Tarn in such calm conditions! Looks like you had a wonderful morning, especially looking at your images. And what an amazing sunset at Coniston water ! You lucky man ! Like the look of the new tripod. I've just treated myself to the Benro G3 head and it's fantastic. Any reason you went for the three section version of the Mach 3 rather than the 4 section? I'm upgrading next year and would really value your thoughts. Cracking video Gareth. Many thanks for sharing.

Great vid. What Jottnar jacket model is that? Fenrir or Fjorm? I seen you're wearing a fleece underneath. Looking to buy one but would kill for a decent review on it? On a miserable cold windy -5 to 0 is that going to keep you warm?

Cheers josh. It’s a fenrir yeah. Not the warmest but great when layering. Amazing fit and quality tho. I have a few and they do a heavyweight fleece which I have that is dam warm. Hemming I think it’s called. 😊👍🏻

Don’t get me wrong it’s a great jacket. Wind stopping is great and as it’s not too thick it goes great under a waterproof. I love it. Plus the very high neck is awesome.
