Hi. I'm Doctor Shruti Tannan. I'm a plastic surgeon and a mom and today I want to talk about how implants drop, or “drop and fluff” as some people like to say.
So, here is a gummy bear silicone implant. And when we place them under your muscle, it takes longer for them to drop. It can take sometimes three months, six months, and very rarely can take up to a year. And that's because a couple things have to happen. So, we place the implant under your muscle. Imagine my right hand. This hand right here is your rib cage and here's the implant and it's right underneath your pectoralis major muscle. And then on this side of the muscle would be your breast tissue. So, when we place implants under the muscle, all of that swells. Your pec major muscle and your breast gland and your muscle goes all the way up your chest and inserts in your arm. So that whole area gets swollen and can look a little rectangular. And you'll see that in photos. It can take months for this to go down, not just weeks. So, when we tell you to give it time, that's what we mean. And there's no rhyme or reason to why it might drop sooner in one person than another. Has nothing to do with your breast size. It has nothing to do with the kind of implant that we placed or how much you work out. It's just the implant has to take its time to settle into its new home and your swelling needs to go out of both your breasts and your pec major muscle.
When we go above the muscle, when the swelling goes down, it's typically what you see is what you get. So, you don't have that prolonged several months dropping and fluffing.
