OSR, My voting station is at the corner down the road from my home. Takes 2 mins of walking 2 mins in line 2 mins for verification of identity document ( voting card or any other permitted ids) 1 min of voting 2 mins walk back to home. In total it hardly takes 10 mins and we get tge entire day off for voting and we can go and vote at any time between morning 7 to evening 5 or 6. That's how it is. The marking ink is only manufactured in Mysore city of Karnataka state and supplied to every corner of the nation and ink stays for min 15 days on the finger. Anyone and everyone 18 and above with any kind of authentic identity document can go and vote in his residential area if he/ she is tge citizen of India. The postal voting system is made available for the officials and army people who are away from home and can't be present in voting boot to cast their vote. Our voting % turnout depends on the candidates standing for election. There is a form provided for casting NOTA = no vote to any candidate but i have casted my vote against all candidates participating for this seat in this election.

Voting is our responsibility and a right for every Indian to choose their government to rule the country. Although there are so many measures followed there is still many dirty activities which parties do to get vote is something sad. For a Indian citizen it is a great loss if they don't vote. It is something we are proud of . We don't need to travel so much . Hardly one km we walk there will be a place for us to vote . Every person has a institution were they can go and vote.

My dad is a Govt official, so he's often alloted election duty. And even though we live in a very much mainland part of India, his shift for that day can go anywhere between 20-26 hours, until the machines are securely deposited back. I used to pick her up at midnight and again get back to polling station by early morning and its not very easy situation If you are a teacher in a government school, then you must become a part of election process and Census process, otherwise they are gonna send you to jail. I told them a similar thing to what Rick says, that they have no right to ever complain if they can't do something as simple as vote. But they were just showed such apathy not realizing how lucky they are they get the right to vote. It is a shame, and makes no sense to me. 2 km max distance for anyone to go to vote (so that the poorest can walk to and fro) has been achieved so dedicatedly that in the state of Gujarat there is a polling booth in 'Gir forest' set up for just one - yes, ONE - voter, who is the only resident and caretaker of the Asiatic lions under conservation in that forest area. It's a record.

Yes it is true that you will find your voting booth within 2KMs of your house and this achieved with a very high success rate. With electronic voting machines and verified paper trail that confirms that the vote was registered in the favor of candidate that you really voted is a fantastic success. Frankly just due to it the complexities involved Indian election process is light years ahead in experience and process than anywhere else.

Elections in India are for electing Members-of-Parliament (MPs) at national parliament and Members-of-Legislative-Assemblies (MLAs) at state or UT legislative assemblies, representing their constituencies and not for electing Prime Minister (PM). The party/coalition of parties having majority in the house are invited to form government by President and then the party/coalition nominates one of them to lead the ministerial cabinet (essentially PM). Similar process is followed to nominate the Chief Minister (CM) of the state / UT by party/coalition enjoying majority in state legislative assemblies.
