How Influencers Cover Up Crimes Against Humanity | Super Users

Influencers are the new face of Chinese propaganda. Hidden amongst the vlogs about puppies and makeup, they clandestinely allow Beijing to whitewash its crimes against humanity.
Despite being blocked in China, RU-vid has become a key ideological battleground for the Chinese Communist Party. And they have created a whole new ecosystem of influencers who tow the party line.
From looking at these videos, these Uygher influencers portray their homeland of Xinjiang as idyllic and prosperous. However, numerous and credible reports document China’s ongoing crimes against the Uygher population - from rape, forced sterilization to slave labor.
Daria Impiombato, a Researcher at The Australian Strategic Policy Institute, and her team, watched over 1,700 of these videos. Soon enough, they found a worrying grey area in which these influencers operate.
Through working for ‘multi-channel networks’ or MCNs,. These “influencer agencies”, with state-approved VPN networks, allow them to circumnavigate the all-powerful “Great Firewall of China”.
However, these agencies are linked to the Chinese Communist Party, and their content must strictly follow Chinese law.
Beijing’s propaganda machine is attempting to control the narrative, not just within their borders, but directly within your algorithms too.

That's what I'm trying to say to these people. Major US companies mostly outsourced all of their labor to Asian countries because of lower labor standards. Now that these Asian nations make money from it, and are hyper-developing their countries, they all of a sudden became a threat to US economy. It's a silly thing. And of course, some of these Asian companies will commit labor violations because they are told to hyper-produce for the US companies that wants everything cheap to get more margins. If US cuts ties with these nations that does the labor for them, then Americans will have to go back to work with jobs they don't like.

What sticks out about these videos isn’t just that they’re on a platform that most mainland Chinese can’t access, but that they’re all so slickly produced - high-quality video, with many clearly filmed by someone else with a camera as opposed to by a person with their phone mounted on a selfie stick. It takes a real suspension of disbelief not to recognize them as government-produced or sanctioned propaganda.

I think many people don't actually register production values that consciously. Whilst I would notice it, I'm also a nerd and pay attention to that type of thing. I could easily see many people simply assume they either got popular and thus had the budget to have a higher production value, or they are rich kids using their parents money to start a YT channel. Especially as this content seems to be targeted at those not aware YT is not available (directly) in China. Which I would say is a bigger red flag than the production value, which could be explained away without need of governmental involvement.

As a person who spent a year and a half investigating the Guli Sisters since September 2021 and making videos about them on my channel, this is excellent coverage. One thing I'd like to add as feedback is that Vice should have mentioned the fact that Uyghurs who are caught using VPN in Xinjiang without permission from the CCP will be charged with 2nd degree terrorism. Still to this day since 22 November 2021, the Guli Sisters have never returned to social media whilst their Douyin, TikTok, Weibo and Kuaishou accounts were gone.

I lived in China for 3 years, and I lived on an island called Hainan Island. In my village, there were Uyghur families that had fled Xinjiang. There was also a small mosque in our community that they'd worship in. Within 2 years of me moving there, the mosque was demolished and the number of families decreased signifcantly. I believe whole heartedly that they were either detained or they fled to another place after realizing they were under threat. It is important that the UN continue to monitor this sitation because this situation is REAL.

The problem we have here is too little too late! I remember that time when Uighur family use emoji on their douyin to spread the news (got banned later), some police oficer share their experience invading Uighur family sleeping at their home with uighur wife and children while the dad held in prison, and some paid foreigner post propaganda visiting Xinjiang while clearly there are agent following them the whole day, hired same Uighur with costume appear in multiple propaganda video... etc I can go on and on...

To some degree that is my reaction to no longer feeling able to function in an active and effective manner physically. The difference is native Americans and native Australians are free now, while Chinese Uyghur are still enslaved and still forced sterilized and Chinese Tibetan are still denied independence.
