Guild Wars 2 in 2023 - my first impressions. It's been years since I've played GW2 and so, being curious, I wanted to see if this game was still worth playing in 2023. To my surprise, GW2 has so much to offer in terms of dynamic world events, amazing combat, and some bad ass PVE/PVP content!
Guild Wars 2 is an immersive MMORPG set in the world of Tyria, featuring stunning graphics and a richly detailed storyline. Choose from a variety of playable races and professions, each with its own unique abilities and skills. Explore the vast and diverse open world, engage in dynamic events that change based on player actions, and team up with other players to complete quests and overcome challenges. Craft your own weapons and armor, engage in intense player versus player combat, and make decisions that have lasting consequences on the game world and story. With a strong emphasis on player-driven gameplay and storytelling, Guild Wars 2 is a must-play for fans of the MMORPG genre.

No sub fee is the main draw at this point for me. Makes it feel way easier to pick up and play whenever I’d feel like it while also not feeling like I’m wasting money whenever I don’t play. Love the combat as much as WoW’s, and the heavier focus on open world exploration/events is exactly what I love and prefer over instanced group content.

I also love the fact that most of these events can be failed even with a lot of people, as the world bosses scale to the number of participants. So the challange is always there. Now I don't say that they are hard, but you should at least have a basic idea what to do.
@RichardWalkerBD
@RichardWalkerBD Год назад
Gw2's horizontal progression works like this. Once you hit level 80 you can get exotic gear right away and can do almost ALL end game content. However, you can grind for ascended gear which has slightly more stats and a slot for infusions which increase your stats even further, among other things. If you want to gear all your characters, this grind will take a long time, but then there's legendary gear. Legendary gear is ALOT harder to get, but it can be used on all your characters at the same time (if you have 10 characters that use staff, instead of grinding for 10 separate ascended staves, you will have access to that 1 legendary staff on ALL 10 characters at the same time), transmuting legendries are free, you can change the stats on them at any time, remove runes and infusions at any time and they are really sexy. And finally, there is the mastery system which are like paragon levels but give your characters additional abilities/quality of life. For instance, there is a mastery skill that allows you to glide forever, other ones make your mounts more useful, jump higher, leap over vast canyons, etc.
@RichardWalkerBD
@RichardWalkerBD Год назад
Also, even though there is level scaling, you are still noticeably much stronger - you can go to lower-level areas like kessex hills and solo champions np as long as you're geared and know your class.
@Ragnar452
@Ragnar452 Год назад
Yup and this lets you enjoy it rather than running for gear and feeling behind all the time. And the lack of sets is also easier to balance. Look at eso how difficult it is to balance with all the crazy op sets that break the game until they get nerfed into oblivion.

Even though all professions can cover all roles (not optimally, but to some degree), there are healing specs in GW2. Some elite specializations have an emphasis on their ability to heal or buff their allies (for example, the druid and tempest).
@PiromancerFreak
@PiromancerFreak Год назад
You can definitely make a more healer orriented build, but it still does not compare to the healing power of a typical healer class from say, World of Warcraft. You're still expected to do DPS and you can't so easily carry entire fights with just your healing alone.
@shiniestskritt2865
@shiniestskritt2865 Год назад
@@PiromancerFreak Healbrands, Druids, and Blood Scourges literally carry their teams with their healing. They can do a little bit of dps (under 10K), but in CM endgame content they are expected to solely heal and provide boons - not dps.
@lj_aderyn
@lj_aderyn Год назад
@@PiromancerFreak You'd be surprised just how much healing/shielding output the more dedicated healer classes can do. But where gw2 varies is that boon supports are a big part of quads, providing permanent uptime on key buffs to make the squad do significantly more damage. But they often still do respectable damage, examples being Firebrand and Mirage. The few more dedicated healer/shielder builds do much less damage, but make up for that by being a huge boon to survivability, and are usually capable of strong ressing. Druid and Scourge are good examples, providing massive amounts of healing and shielding respectively, and both having the ability to mass resurrect their team in a pinch.
@gs2791

@@PiromancerFreak what are you even talking about... you dps 100x more as a healer in wow than you do in gw2
@sammywubs
@sammywubs Год назад
@@PiromancerFreak This is absolutely not true. Compared to both WoW and FFXIV, dedicated healers in GW2 do almost no damage. They are there for boons and heals. A good DPS will bench 30-40k and a good dedicated healer might only reach 3-5k. And you can absolutely carry on healing alone. Whenever I lead raid trainings, I always do it as hFB or heal alac druid because you can help cover any mistakes that people are making and you can make sure that your subgroup has solid uptime on the boons you provide, which means at least 25-50% more dps from the 3 pure dps players in my subgroup. Also typically as either one of those specs, you are likely to be tanking any toughness based boss as well as healing and you can carry even more as long as you know how to tank the bosses properly.

Burnout from endgame raiding is what made me switch from ffxiv to gw2. Chasing endgame gears, making sure to get a weekly clear, and as a solo player it was really hard to get a clear with other random players. As for gw2, it made me remember the feeling of playing an MMO once again. Anywhere I go there is always at least 1 player running around doing his/her stuff. Seeing/joining a farming group in the open world. I’m still around 180hrs of active gameplay, got my 3rd ascended trinket, maxed out tailoring and now preparing to craft my 1st ascended armor. I’m slowly progressing my character while doing irl stuff. It really feels good that I’m able to enjoy both world(gaming and real life).

GW2 does have tab targeting, it's a hybrid tab target/action combat system. You can make a dedicated healing class if you wish, but it's not necessary for dungeons. There is no tank class with the traditional taunt/threat mechanics of other MMOs. This makes finding a group super easy.

Its cool you are trying it out again. It's only gotten better over the years. Some additional info on your points: The dynamic event system in later maps is often on an even larger scale, that require most of the people on the map to complete. The leveling system is basically a tutorial pre 80. After 80 you continue gaining xp for the mastery system that gives different accountwide utility upgrades. There is tab targeting. Its optional along with action camera, but you can lock onto targets. Projectiles will have travel time however and without a lock you will fire or attack in front of you in most cases. Originally the idea at launch was to not have the tank, healer, dps trinity, however thats been altered a bit over the years. Most all classes can be built for support, healing or dps, and in some situations even tank although not in the same way you see in other mmos. Each class has 3 elite specs which can often overhaul thier class mechanics quite a bit, making them play very differently and expand on the core class a lot or make them more proficient at a specific role.

Healer role is actually very needed in GW2 PvE endgame, e.g. strike missions (10-man instances), raids (20-man instances), and even fractals (5-man instances). An elite specialization - Druid is dedicated to healing. Other specializations such as Tempest, Mechanist, Firebrand are also good at healing. Even in open world boss fights, healing is much appreciated. And GW2 encourages playing healers with different classes. I think what you meant in your video is that there is no role locking to a specific class.

3:45 You can and do in fact 1 shot things as a down leveled level 80 character. :3 Now you won't one shot veteran/champion tier mobs, think of elite mobs/bosses being the equivalent from wow, but because a level 80 character does have everything that makes their build unlocked you will roll over earlier game zones. 5:20 a note on WvW zergs: organized team zergs are an entirely different beast in gw2 than other games mindless zergs that you may be used to. I would describe it as performing a raid encounter against players as you will encounter teams that are very organized and very tactical in their team play. They will and do demolish larger groups of unorganized players through strategic use of game mechanics and profession/class features/skills etc. 6:28 There are healing/support focused builds that you can play if that's what you like to do. Currently the most impactful role in raids/strikes is support. Having organized supports will not only keep you alive and reduce the damage you take significantly but it will increase your groups dps by as much as 10x on the high end, typically 2x to 3x is more common though as most people aren't braindead. :3 There are half support builds that are not only highly effective but desired by groups too; a WoW to gw2 translation would be ele/enh shaman with 100% uptime bloodlust. Generally it's easier to get into group content by running a half-dps/supp build, especially when you're learning content. You'll often see teams of 1 primary support/healer, 1 and sometimes 2 offensive support's and 3-2 pure dps in a 5man team.

One thing is that the world feels alive, another is that it also feels lived in with areas of the map just being there because. You never get there via the story or anything, it's just there and is a testament to someone either being there or having been there. I find far too often that things only exist in MMOs if they have relevance to the player. Vanilla WoW did this a lot with areas that were just there to be there, that was wonderful, and as the expansions grew they became more and more utilitarian to the point that if a place exists players will be guided through it at some point and that feels boring.

The main reason I quit was because IRL priorities and when I came back my guild had fallen apart and I was behind on the the Living World Story. I main'd a Warrior that speciallized in buffing and healing myself and people around me with shouts. With the right stat set up I was able to both play the role of "tank" as well as a primary healer for dungeons and WvWvW content. Well no there is traditional healing specs in GW2, its just that all classes are built to be a jack of all trades until you specifically specialize in something. Like you can be a proper healer by playing elementalist and using water spells as an example. You are correct in saying every class provides their own healing and there is no need for a dedicated healer you can still heal if you want to, in fact some groups would love that for more difficult content. There is a dedicated support role however in GW2 which is a bit different from a traditional healer. In GW2 there is a lot of boons, boons are things that let you deal more damage, be able to take more hits and move really fast. Supports essentially are designed to keep these boons permanently active. So rather than there being a holy trinity like most MMO's, Guild wars 2 is divided between supports and damage dealers. There is no need for tanks or traditional healers in most content, you are either the guy giving out the buffs to the whole team or you are the guy outputting damage into enemies and sometimes you are both and absolutely broken for doing so (Looking at you Mechanist) But you can heal and tank if you want to, there is absolutely nothing stopping you, however you might find the content doesn't really suit the roles themselves thats why most players don't partake in them.
@cattysplat
@cattysplat Год назад
This also plays into the gearing system, there are tons of stats to build characters different ways. The big fallacy coming from other MMOs where you just collect 1-2 main stats, is solo players building full glass cannon berserk gear trying to solo harder content designed for multi players. You can avoid some damage with dodges but eventually champion monsters will kill you before you kill them because they have tons of hp. Heals are bad without +healing, boons cannot be 100% uptime without concentration +duration, take massive damage without toughness/vitality. Glass cannons builds are designed for grouping where supports cover weaknesses.

On point 3 it is important to establish other things, a high lvl character in a low lvl area has much more power than a new character, mostly because a high lvl character even when doing reduced damage in a low lvl area, has more skills and combinations of spells than a low lvl character, and many of those new combinations basically twoshot enemies in some cases, even more if the high lvl character has mounts and mount attacks upgrades.

The big problem with Guild Wars 2 is Publish itself... There's no marketing, there's no publicity, and when they launched the game on Steam which would get a giant playbase, they did a mega promotion where instead of selling the separate expansions they sold the complete package Expansion+Live Seasons making the price of the game itself absurdly expensive. But I particularly love the game, I recommend giving it a chance. Just one more thing, there are "healer" classes, but the concept in Gw2 is a little different, they are support classes, being able to heal, hit and tank but with the objective of giving "buffs" to the group, but the concept of the trinity (tank, heal, dps) doesn't even exist.

What makes GW2 different from other MMOs is that people will still hype up the game a lot and praise it quite actively even though it has moderate content droughts, can check furnace taken, confusing directions, content release scheduling, poor communication frequently, and even recently only brought out a small patch after a year since the xpac release. That's how you know the game feels rather solid with some good content. They talked about PVP changes and such YEARS ago. Like Alliances announced roughly 5 years ago. At least we got a roadmap now. game is GREAT for new players but it can be a struggle for vets. Especially during IBS Champions it made a lot of people scared for the future. It is interesting watching all of the people bouncing around games since all of the games are rather "bounce friendly" and aren't trying to suck all of your time. There is a bit of a mid period going on in Classic WoW, Retail (until 10.1), FF14, and GW2 so people from all of those communities are trying something else out because they are feeling "Caught up" or get the idea of the other games. Like WoW players that finished FF14, they see the direction, did all the main stuff, sort of curious how the other games are doing. I still have yet to do this bounce route with ESO simply because I can't get into the combat. I'm happy more are playing GW2. Could mean they will get proper funding for new content or GW3. Either way, I'd just like them to stabilize.

GW2 is a tab targeting system. It isn't true action combat where you aim projectiles and what-not, but it is a hybrid between tab targeting and action combat. Only some skills can be used without a target. And the action camera mode is not ideal in the most challenging content in the game.

Yeah, saying that GW2 is not tab targeting just shows that Nixxiom didn't actually play the game long enough - sorry Nixxiom if you're reading this, but it's true. It's very cleary tab targeting, it's just that many attacks have frontal aoe aspect to them... and action camera basically the same system as WoW's recentely added automatic targetting, except it also adds crosshair. Whenever I return to GW2 I give action camera a shot, but always end up going back to tab targeting, because it feels like that's the natural way to play. It's good that the action camera option is there, but it's misleading to claim that it's not tab targeting.
@tyburkulosis8799
@tyburkulosis8799 Год назад
Yeah imagine running from a boss mechanic and not being able to attack at the same time. Or throwing aoe's behind you as you're being chased in WvW. A healer using action cam mode would just be griefing their team. Action cam mode is basically just a thing they added for accessibility and immersion, which is good. But I wouldn't encourage anyone to use it unless they have to.

I'd put a very big asterisk on #7, Mr. Nixxiom sir, while it was true that at launch there were no "healers", much has changed over the years, and the devs have walked back that direction. In many high-end content like raids, strikes(single-boss raids with no trash), and fractals (m+) healers are a necessity. Even in big open world metas, if you're somehow not dying despite standing in the fire, that's because there's a healer quietly healing away everyone's need to do mechanics. I would say however that what is unique, then, is that every class has a potential to become a healer, even warriors, though poorly after some mega nerfs (RIP healer bladesworn 2022-2022).

Hi, flamethrower guy here. It should be noted GW2's level scaling is different from ESO's level scaling in that you DON'T also get scaled up when going into later game content as a low level player. Also GW2 DOES in fact have healing specs but these only really matter in endgame content. *Also Dragon flying in WoW isn't exactly copied from the dragon mount in GW2. It's more of a hybrid between the dragon and the griffon mount and IMO better than both. The funny thing is that commercial you showed when talking about this was a total lie. The commercial came out a week before Dragonflight launched and it could take weeks or even months to unlock the griffon or skyscale mount so the "why wait to fly a dragon" line was complete nonsense. If that commercial came out when Dragonflight was announced it'd have been perfect but as always with Anet's marketing it was too little too late.

I have a level 80 Ranger, and the mounts I have are the Raptor, Springer, Skimmer and Jackal. With the recent End of Dragons xpac fishing was added in, and it is so very different to how you fish in WoW. In that you have a sort of minigame when a fish is hooked, which has you trying to keep your fishing rectangle over the constantly moving fish bubble. And you also get your own personal fishing boat as well. 😊 There is so much more, that makes it good to really list here. 😊

#7 started off true, but since the expansions, there are healer specs in the elite specs. Whether Rangers specing Druid, Guardians specing Firebrand, or Elementalists specing tempest, there are healer specs now. Even Necro scourge i believe can be healy, and Machinists have one too. Still the reason I love GW2 at launch was because it was different than all the other cookie cutter mmo's, and I liked the fact there were no quest hubs to run back and forth to, you just run around the zones/world doing what you want to level.

See... I am a herald Main... and I do spec into 'healer' and I KNOW Herald isn't a meta 'healer' certainly not a primary healer... but Healers in GW2 are not a staple that are required. @lj_aderyn

Necro scourge is actually moreso a shielder than a healer, providing massive damage shields for the team to mitigate damage - but their actual healing output is extremely minimal. That said, no one can mass-resurrect a team quite like a scourge. Also there's Specter on thief which is supporty but more focused on single-target shielding.

@TuxedoVaileGAMES Год назад
Another thing that personally attracts me to Guild Wars 2 over any other MMO is how it respects my time and life with it's horizontal progression. I don't have to grind for anything if I don't want to and I'll still always be perfectly able to enjoy endgame content even if I only log in once in a while or go on hiatus for 6 months. I'm not punished for not logging in and doing mindless chores every single day and I love that. If I decide to not log in for a year, all of my gear and everything will still be perfectly appropriate for all levels of endgame content when I come back. It's amazing. When you have that 40 hour work week on-top of having a family, dog, or other hobbies, this kind of design philosophy from Guild Wars 2 is absolutely perfect.

One small correction other people have pointed out: there are, in fact, multiple classes that exceed in healing and become a dedicated healer, though none of them are just that and most groups won't DEMAND that you play one unless you're in like... a Fractal, which is hard af and probably the hardest content in the game. I can say that, as I am currently building more than one potential healer. Guardians are the "cleric" of this game, Rangers can become healing Druids, Revenants can do whatever the hell they want so there's an option to be a healer and even Engineer has multiple healing tools and can be built to be an effective support. Hell, even the most DPSy of DPS classes, the freaking Elementalist can be a Katara-like support.

Regarding level scaling: though your level and stats are scaled down, you have to consider that, for example, if you go to a starting zone and get scaled down to Lv7 in a particular part of the map, you will still be a couple of levels above the level of the mobs in the area, and at the same time, you will still be a Lv7 with super optimized stats, with passive traits still active, with all your weaponskills and support skills active, so in essense, you only get your "numbers" scaled down but you get to keep everything else. So this basically means that, despite you being scaled down, you're still effectively a "God" (kinda) in low level zones, just not to the level where you just one shot absolutely everything on a starting map. Sure regular mobs get killed almost instantly with one or two skills, but stronger enemies still feel strong and in the case of some particular enemies (like Legendary Bandit Executioners, emphasis on Legendary, you know, the kind of enemies that are one level below Boss-type enemies) will still completely own you if you don't pay attention. Personally I think this is pretty cool because it scales you down to a point where strong enemies still pose a threat. Despite this, you can still prove to be a strong ally for actual low-level players doing their thing in that zone and since only your numbers are scaled down and you don't lose neither skills nor passive traits, that specific part of power you gained through leveling is never ever lost. This translates to something that I think is super interesting and that is that max level players can still have fun on low level zones, you're still more powerful than a player that is at the actual level/power for that map level, but you're not so powerful to the point your presence can translate into griefing, as in insta-completing events with one skill, or killing rare enemies with a single critical hit. TL;DR level scaling is there but it's done the right way, only your numbers get scaled down, but you get to keep all the other stuff you did gain through leveling (weapon skills, support skills, passive traits, optimized stats, etc).
@vinapocalypse

(My WoW addiction started around late 2007) I eventually started playing Cata again around the time Dragon Soul dropped, but it bored me quickly. GW2 release was a breath of fresh air that kept me entertained for over a month, but then Mists of Pandaria dropped and I stopped playing GW2 because pandas. I do remember how much fun I had learning to play an Elementalist with the stance weaving deal if you want to call it that. On the throne of the best healers he chares it with the Mechanist and the Herold which both can also be played as pure dps or boon dps. So the expansions introduced the classic trinity of healer, tank and dps but in the GW2 way of working. You can be a healing tank (apothecary herold heal) and it works.

The lack of gear grind is a double edged sword, as many of us enjoy chasing the next number increase, it's hard to break this habit. I've had to stop and learn how GW2 stats and builds work so I can start becoming a support character instead of just another damage dealer as I love being healer and tank in MMOs. It's endgame progression systems are complicated and unique, which takes much time to learn.
