Thank you for your no nonsense review of the new Mac Studio. I am waiting on delivery of an identical unit and interested in “real world” editing with FCPX. Refreshing not to be bothered by all the “noise” on other reviews about all the comparisons and benchmarks that mean nothing to the target user of this computer. Keep it up!

Great review of the *Mac Studio* ;) I am keen to get one, mainly for music production work, but I believe most audio plugin vendors still haven't optimised for the M1 chipset as yet. But as this will be a '5 year machine investment' for me, I am hoping they catch up during that time.

Mac Studio … Thanks for creating a thoughtful review of this interesting new product! After considering it for a day, I pulled the trigger on the base M1 Max Mac Studio but bumped the storage to 1 TB. It’s set to deliver in early April. I’m hoping this will tide me over for at least 5 years.

Mac Studio. Enjoyed your review, and your low-key approach. I was hoping / waiting for Apple to announce a larger iMac at their Spring Event, but now I am convinced that iMac may not ever be released. So, placed my order for the Studio with M1 Max and 4TB SSD.

Currently the best take on the Mac Studio from all the videos! I do have to disagree regarding use case, I own a 14" pro max 32 core with 64gb and most of my workflow for video is with canon R5 and R6 either in canons codecs or proress that I get from ninja V and I use FCP for editing. And I do get often dropped frames, stuttering during playback and would benefit for some of my projects in faster exports, I mean time saved in those is priceless, especially if you do a lot of changes after client reviews. And my production is small regarding video, so I see this really usable in a lot of small productions, and freelance scenarios. Also there is a big factor of future proofing and when you buy something as a business which most of freelancers are than this is a long term investment also.

Mac Studio - Thanks Oliur for this overview of the new Mac Studio. I was originally thinking of replacing existing MacBook Pro with a Mac Mini (with a M1 Pro chip) if released at the March event but thinking this would be a much better option moving forward.

Wow thankyou so much! I've been looking for a review of the Mac Studio that actually uses ProRes and Final Cut Pro X. You have totally confirmed my suspicions about how the media accelerators are working. If there is just one clip in the timeline only one accelerator can be used, there is no parallelism, where multiple accelerators can work on one clip. So unless you are doing multiple clips stacked all the time the additional accelerators in the M1 Ultra aren't actually doing anything. Just one question is in the test at 7:57 what codec is the 4:2:2 10-bit video? Is it ProRes and did you have much clip stacking going on in that project? If it was ProRes and there was no stacking I'm assuming the more powerful GPU was the factor due to the effects that made it jump down from 5m58s to 3m54s. It's always good to know exactly what is going on so we can best apply it to our situation. What I really want to know is if the average person working with a pure ProRes workflow can get away with the base M1 Mac Mini.

I’ve been thinking about getting the Mac Studio as a future proofing content creation machine but I think it’s way overpowered for my use cases. I’ll probably stick with a MacBook Pro M1 linked to the new Studio Display which looks ace.

Hi Oliur, How's the Blender viewport performance in handling high polygonal count or high poly sculpting? In my mind, the M1 Ultra has an advantage over other Nvidia cards in the VRAM capacity. Could you please test Blender's viewport performance in object mode handling a high poly count scene? How many polygon can it handle before the object mode and sculpt mode user experience become laggy? Thank you very much.

Thank you for testing the Mac Studio with 3D software like Blender! Not many RU-vidrs do the GPU rendering test. Also great visuals as always 🤩 I do have to say that the Mac Studio is not amazing for GPU 3D rendering. My ITX build with an RTX 3060 Ti rendered the BMW scene in 23 seconds. That’s 10 seconds faster than the M1 Ultra and it’s not even high-end 😂 Seems like it is not for me.

Thanks.. this was really well presented.. Just a note. With Blender 3.1, check your Macbook Air is on the latest MacOS version, my 2020 M1 Macbook Air got stuck on MacOS 12.1 and wouldn't detect system updates even though they were showing up in the console list, which forced CPU rendering, turned out it just needed a reboot, then it finally managed to detect and install the OS 12.2.1 update, after which GPU rendering worked (Blender did mention the minimum MacOS version, which wierded me out at first). Mine is just a rock bottom entry level 7 core gpu model, it did the BMW render in 2m 24s with both CPU and GPU selected in blender system preferences (I wasn't even aware that was a possibility, I just did it to see what would happen, it's probably dumb), on GPU alone it takes 2m 50s, and 6m 2s on a CPU only run.

Great video, took the plunge and ordered an ultra with the display too, pick it up tomorrow morning! Only disappointment is that unless I’m prepared to wait 6 weeks I can only get the base model, with 1TB SSD and 64gb or RAM. I find this a bit irritating, because as you rightly say there is no upgrade route. Apple need to get their act together on this and have the stores keep more popular upgrades in stock.

For the Blender BMW test, did you try different bucket sizes? I’ve read that bigger buckets/tiles are better for Apple Silicon.

It would have been interesting to see what would have been achievable with gaming in this early Mac Studio review (only the 2nd I have seen at this point). However, I understand that this was not the focus of the review. I am interested in this for music production - I think the Mac Mini is capable enough for my basic needs regarding photo and video editing and I would use an M1 Max Studio solely for music. If you do have time for some rudimentary games testing, I would be happy to see that. Not a real game head but I do use Parallels to play some Steam games and the Mini is sorely underpowered for that. Thanks for the review

*Mac Studio* Might have commented before but I have a base-level MS and I'm utterly delighted with it. Granted, I don't tax it too much but I do run my entire business on it which involves some photo editing, website design/management and more general productivity stuff - running dual Studio Displays and they're awesome too. I'd been waiting years for Apple to decouple monitor and computer (outside of their MacPro line which I couldn't justify - or likely afford). I'd been using iMac 27's for a couple of generations so all worked out perfectly for me. YMMV.

The irony of saying there is no modularity when apple said that it is modular in there presentation. Apple's marketing can be very confusing at time.

Mac Studio. Glad to see apple doing some good move for 3d artists, it’s just insane the power efficiency/performance ratio in this thing. For now going with windows for 3d it’s still the way to go. But if they manage to push metal more and more into the industry and they come with some upgradeable gpu power, Nvidia it’s going to be in pretty serious problems

“Mac Studio” Just watched this after you recommended on insta. Great video, I think I’ll be going for the M1 Pro 14” MacBook. Seems like if you’re not editing 8K res a MAX chip could be overkill. Generally I edit 1080P or 4K. So the Pro chip should be enough.

Did you also check the Cinebench Scores in Comparison to the gaming pc? Really curios about that.

Most video creators would likely be ok with the Max chip for the Mac Studio in my opinion. Ultra is there for either hardcore users using the likes of red cameras and 60 track audio or for those who just want the latest and greatest. I know of RU-vid creators that used the Mac mini for a year for video creation content so I guess this is for the Pro Pro's.

I think this might be my next Mac to replace my 13” mbp 🤷🏻‍♂️ I was holding out for a higher specd Mac mini, and I guess I got it
