The Israeli PM is talking about destroying Hamas simply for the media. For that reason also he is making the attack dependent upon getting the hostages back. He's deliberately making it look almost like a humanitarian mission. He knows Hamas will not give them up, so he leaves himself a blank cheque to do what he wants. His last ten years have been spend evading law suites and jail time.He is desperate to find a way out of the crushing humiliation he suffered through the massacre, and being - like most politicians - a man of virtually no scruples, he will do all it takes to win.

He seemed to be saying that the media was swallowing Hamas’s casualty reports (via the Hamas-run “Gaza ministry of health”) with no skepticism, while also failing to distinguish how many of the alleged casualties were Hamas fighters (i.e., enemy combatants). He also noted that Hamas was using boys of ages 15-17 as fighters. So when Hamas says that “children” have been killed, that figure probably includes (or more likely, almost entirely consists of) Hamas fighters under the age of 18. While it’s terrible that Hamas has forced them into this fight, the IDF can’t just not shoot back at some 16 year old who is about to fire an RPG at them.

Have you heard of children armies among radical populations? It's so common in Africa. Children carry automatic rifles whilst still to small to look at the gunsight properly.

The biggest mistake Netanyahu made was the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange back in 2011 when over 1,000 prisoners (many of them key Hamas commanders) were released for one Israeli soldier. Those commanders went on to continue to bombard Israel with rockets and then mastermind the attack that killed 1200 people and took over 200 hostages.

The Palestinians have rejected it every time, even in 1947 when Israel would have received even less than it ended up with in 1948. The Palestinians don’t want a two state solution. They want a state of Palestine and no Israel (or Israelis) at all. Netenyahu supported two states at one time, and probably still would if he had any confidence that it would ensure peace. But he knows it won’t, because that has never been the goal of the Palestinians, who only want the g*noc*de of Israel.

Not only that, but there is a tendency recently in intelligence services to rely more and more on elecronic surveillance and getting rid of costly boots on the ground ( this is actually the theme of a recent James Bond film) . Hamas made full use of this shortcoming by using old style landline telephone systems in the tunnels, which caused an false intelligence perception that all was quiet on the western front.

@@Michaeleddlestien I’ve Jewish friends and visited Tel Aviv often. I’m a white Brit living in London. Love the country, and see it as such. But, there is always a sense of deep unease palpable in the air, it’s almost a collective eye over the shoulder. A siren can sound at any moment. Violence can erupt at any point. And does, and has, past and present.. last month. As you approach and head into Jerusalem, even more so, obviously. It’s sad to experience it.

Israel has stated that Gaza would be turned over to control of the Palestinian Authority, which already governs the West Bank. Presumably there would have to be some sort of joint effort to root out remaining Hamas terrorists, fill in the tunnels, and rebuild the city.

I have no proof or even evidence, but I suspect that Hamas wanted Israel to react in rage. Instead they got a much more careful approach.
