The Israel Weapon Industries Negev Light Machine gun, it’s a 5.56 gas operated open bolt weapon, that was domestic designed and produced inside Israel since 1997. Negev machine guns serve as the IDF’s squad automatic weapon.
The Negev is perfect for covering these because its high volume of fire gives it the capability to destroy an incoming vehicles engine and stop it in its tracks. The Negev light machine gun is used to create what’s called “suppressing fire”. The Negev has a rate of fire at 1050 rounds per minute at its highest rate of fire that’s 17 bullets per second flying at 3,000 feet per second.

Negev (like many Hebrew words) has the stress on the first syllable. So instead of Nege-v Say Ne-gev Or Merkava- Rather than Merka-va

Former Negevist here. The best part is night ops, where we used to get a barrel mounted IR marker and a single eye NVG as part of the kit. Arguably thanks to that we were more accurate at night than in the day. Also fun fact, the joke was the Negev, נגב was actually an acronym for נזק גב ברכיים, which translated to "knee and back damage" because it was heavier than the standard kit.

As a former IDF Artillery Corps man I've only got to fire the Negev in training when it was all new, in 2002. The first time I've shot it in semi-auto, I was honestly confused - I barely felt any recoil at all, I wasn't sure the weapon fired correctly! It felt like the recoil was barely 30% of the recoil of a standard m4 or Galil 5.56.

Also, do your grunts also hump two and a half pounds of batteries? IIRC 20 years ago USMC Rifleman had around 50 spare batteries stuffed in assault pack /cargo pockets as well as the ones powering your gear.

Well, it's been 20 years, I doubt much of the equipment we used is the same today. Also, right now there's so many mobilized that equipment is all over the place. In any case, the IDF is not an expeditionary force, there really is no need to carry stuff to last you weeks - a supply vehicle is always a few hours away. Combat engineers, though, do have to carry lots of heavy stuff just due to the sheer number of mission-types they have to handle at a moment's notice. @@TomDog5812

Being a negevist is hard! I’m a current idf soldier in the combat engineering force. in comparison, I’m a regular infantry soldier and carry around 7kg-10kg on me during battle, the negevist carry around 20kg. They choose mostly the crazy short bulky guys that when given a task, won’t stop until they are knocked down

Former negavist here, amazing weapon, It is light and easy to use, doesn't jam as much as its counterparts, and is easy to clear. also, the semi-auto mode is used in situations where you don't want and wild automatic weapon, such as populated places, and sometimes CQB where the negevist can turn in to a rifleman in a switch.

My guys use the Nerf multi blaster We found best SOP was battery-free units, Manual loading and cocking is way more reliable especially in the urban CQB COIN Strike Ops. The enemy also doesn't feel what hit em 😂

As an average Hungarian infantry captain, some remarks: 1. it is easy to zero the PKM without having the semi mode. Just leave a gap of one bullet between the bullets in the belt. 2. the biggest disadvantage of the PKM is that it is difficult to put optics and/or laser sights on them, therefore they can hardly used at night only if you increase their weight significantly. 3. The footage at the end of the video says "PK machinegun" but they are NSV heavy machine guns (12,7x101mm). Anyway, really cool content as always. Love your work.

Yeah the end seems weird, 100mm typo xD. PK should be at ~1173mm and NG7 at ~1000mm. Maybe with a collapsed buttstock (NG7 ~780mm)? I am not certain, whether the PKM has a collapsible buttstock.

I was an IDF soldier stationed at the Gaza border a couple of years ago, and here's a couple of facts: There isn't always 1 negevist in the squad, because a magist (a guy with a mag) could be there instead (they are interchangeable). It's pronounced nEgev (stress on the first e, not the second as he does. I mean no disrespect,just correcting). Fun fact - the negev can use the normal 5.56 mags. Negevs are often loaded with green tipped ammo, which has better armor piercing capabilities.

About the first fact, when I served in the Israeli infantry (1998-2001) we all trained on all different weapons. I was carrying the Mortar, but I was trained on the sniper rifle and Negev and many other weapons. Unit 50 of the Nachal!

They usually have their base weapon (now mostly Tavor), and then some of them get a specialized weapon, so they either switch to training only with it, or training them both. Sometimes they get more than 1 special weapon, but they don't train with stuff they don't have to.

@@zerberus_ms interesting, sad, because I remember in my basic training they told us that's our highest advantage on all enemies, if my sniper goes down, I can take over. Funny story about the Tavor, the day I went back to my unit to return my rifle and most uniforms, and other equipment, was the day before my release from my mandatory service, I returned my M16 and all my friends that are still in service, got the Tavor! I am jealous to this day.

Some Negevs were sold to Estonia but we use to think those were prototypes the Israelis wanted to get rid of because we had problems with them(could also have honestly been a training/skill issue), there were stories about even bigger problems. The reason we thought those were prototypes is because the serial numbers started with 000. On the other had, the men who worked with Negevs in Afganistan said the machine gun did it's job well.

I was an IDF machine gunner in the 1980s, and we didn't use the FN MAG with 2 man teams. Just the machine gunner lugging it around. Though, sometimes, we'd get other guys to take additional ammunition belts. The FN MAG was the only MG used by dismounted infantry back then (other than the battalion level heavy weapons platoon, which had the Browning .50 cal). Anyway, the MAG was a great piece of kit. Reliable, packed a punch, accurate, and good range. But it had one major drawback, it's heavy.

Recently I heard one of the more innovative tactics the IDF is using is to have a Negev gunner with the Iron Man pack pin down the bad guys while a radioman attached to the same fire team calls in a strike from the Iron Sting, 120 mm guided mortar system. If the Iron Sting is dedicated to the fire team the strike takes less than two minutes to land from the time the call is made. Apparently, it is proving to be very effective against urban areas that have been prepared to prevent infantry mobility. The application of more than 300 rounds on the targets while waiting for the strike is the secret sauce, that is why the Iron Man ammo pack is required, it does not allow for the suppressive fire to slow down before the mortar round lands.

The difference is between soldiers in an army who have a legitimate need for large capacity magazines, and people who are not in the armed forces or a well regulated militia.

I spoke with a guy who used to be Negev'ist and moved to be sniper using M24. He said the switch was like two different worlds. He added, that he missed his Negev, it wasn't as accurate as sniper rifle but it had beautiful shredding power. He said it was relatively light for him, he not very tall guy either.

I switched from the FN MAG to sniper with m24 and i also sometimes missed the fire power and sound of just unleashing hell from a metal rod lol but i also really loved the delicacies and precision work of sniping.

Former CS Negevist here. One thing that Cappy fails to mention is that the Negev will deal exactly 99 damage on a headshot against a helmeted enemy at close range, which is pretty disappointing. Sure they can be finished off quickly after but that can often be too late. It can however be run by counter terrorists and terrorists and can be acquired for quite a reasonable price.

This 99 damage matters way less of a downside with Negev compared to some other guns that do same because first bullets in Negev are inaccurate so it takes a second after you open fire for it to align the fire but at that time it is also pinpoint accurate so you can as well get 5 bullets in head if necessary - unlike with some other guns where you make a headshot only for other bullets to spray and miss.

also worth mentioning that unlike the minimi, the Negev can reliably use 30/40rds box magasines reliably thanks to the ajustable gas system, making it easier to carry arround for long marches and harder for a potential enemy sniper to identifie the negev gunner among the rest of the riflemen

Cappy, the Salvadoran Civil War had already ended by when prototype Negevs were exported. Our Armed Force did use the Galil assault rifle, mostly assigned to spec ops and long range patrol units; some Jericho handguns made their way into the officer corps; before US military aid was provided, Israel supplied assorted small arms, and; the Israeli Air Force trained our Huey pilots, and our air force procured Fouga Magisters and Ouragan jets from the IAF. However, during the 1980-1992 civil war, the Salvadoran army’s SAW were hand-me down M-60s, mostly provided as military aid.

Traditionally the IDF used the MAG as it's light infantry machine gun, the Negev came to give a lighter alternative. In reality the MAG is still very widely used because it's extremely reliable at every condition and it's 7.62 ammunition is much cheaper than the 5.56 steel rounds the Negev uses. Although it needs more conditioning, the Negev is significantly more mobile. So we use both, normally 1 MAG and 2 Negevs in a unit. The MAG will be more static and give more of the cover fire for the squads that run ahead with Negevs. Also the MAG is the standard machine gun for armed vehicles of any type.

The now-extinct Policia Federal of Mexico had several Negev NG-7s mounted on their light-duty units (Ford F-150) and the Negev NG-5 was used by some Special Forces Units. The SEDENA (Mexican Army) last year ordered a large number of Negevs in several variants.

An open bolt weapon will always be far less accurate than a closed bolt rifle. After the trigger is pulled the bolt drops and move the weapon slightly, making accurate distance shots difficult. Meanwhile any modern rifle can accurately hit a man sized target at 300-400m

It's got two other critical features and tactics over the SAW 1. It's bolt is self retaining, unlike the saw. 2. Aside from zeroing the Semi automatic feature allow you to 'kentucky windage' your enemy. Usually machine guns start with/cyclic-rapid and go sustained. The Negev can start in semi automatic to see where the first round land. Then go rapid/sustained. (Giving the enemy the impression that it is initially engaged by a rifle. Only to be takened out by a zeroed beatened zone of a Negev rapid burst ). This makes it very very effective against enemy snipers, mortar and rpg teams . A SAW will have issues accomplishing this task

In the case of israel, alot of it. the 'kentucky windage' with semi automatic fire before going rapid tactic allegedly was pioneered by אגוז fighting Hezbollah Kornet Teams and OP points in the early 2000s.

In the SAW 249, the bolt system has an extractor which is not secured. That is if your doing a barrel change and (accidently ) send forward the bolt career group, you can lose your bolt extracter and it's spring effectively deadlining the weapon. This does not happen on the Negev as the extracter is secured by a locking system to the bolt carrier group Its diffcult for me to explain but if you are really interested- Forgotten Weapons does a very good job of explaining it.

That’s not true there is a 7.62 version but the infantry version is still 5.56, the 7.62 we use is the FN MAG

Wanted to state that the minimi did not stick in the IDF for the reasons of high maintenance costs and dependancy on the imported parts compared to licensed locally produced FN mag (m240) The minimi served in all the infantry units for a duration of 3 or more years in which the drawbacks were noticed as mentioned above but also the events of misfires I served during the addition of the minimi as a saw insteady of one of the medium saw FN Mag

My son-in-law is an armorer I'm a givati reserve battalion, they've had souch trouble with the Negev tons of breakdowns, barrel overheats etc , zero issues with the MAG or Tavor it needs to go back on the drawing board..

The negev is the bomb dude I love it even on auto if u r good u can fire a single round and the foldable stock makes it great for urban warfare something that was not mentioned there is also 2 different barrel lengths so it can get really compact

As soon as I got out of basic/ait to my new unit, the saw gunner in my section knew he was able to give it to me to carry because I was the "new guy". I carried that saw through Iraq and was glad i had it. It was comforting. Id say more so than an M4.

an Israeli over here just wanted to say that hamas hasent been seen operating PKM or DSHK for a very long time now, they usually prefer homemade RPGs and chip AK variants. additionally your pronunciation of "Ramat Hasharon" fucking killed me - you said "Ramat Haroshan" which loosely translate to "baby frog heights" XD other then that, great vid as always, and a great negev.

Tadpole is the Engish word for the early stage of life for frogs and toads, but yeah, the mispronunciation cracked me up. Also he really should know by now that the word Negev should have the stress on the first syllable and Tavor on the last syllable. Cappy constantly messes that up.

That's not the only one... currently exists a Negev NG7 chambered in 7.62 × 51 mm NATO. This one serves as the (in British Army parliance) as GPMG albeit being more compact than many of their competitors (such as FN MAG, M240 and the German MG 3).

I don't agree with the points saying the PKM had a lack of mobility due to its size and weight, but the optics point was spot on. With the 200rd box, it's surprisingly well balanced, so felt similar to my SAW with all our "cool-guy stuff" strapped onto it. (I'm ancient, so it was a PEQ-2, Elcan-145, and Surefire whatever the green one that took two 123s and lasted for ~4 hours...)

The FN MAG, or L7A2 GPMG as it's known in my country, has.... and still does.... stands the test of time as it is STILL being used for various tasks. It's old enough that my Dad used it during his 3 year stint on National Service as a Grenadier Guardsman back in 1962, if she's been around for that long, it's a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!" I also got to use it when I was A)14 years old as an Army cadet.... by Christ did it give me a shock.....and again at 16 years old when I joined the British Army. Loved it then and I still do.

The way the Nevev is employed during nighttime operations is pretty sweet. Negevistim (negev operators) are equipt with a PVS-14 monocular and an IR LAM is mounted on the NEGEV, allowing the operator to aim "from the hip" while maintaining optimal situational awareness. Also, the "Negevon" is the SF varient, basically the same thing as a standard Negev, but the stock is replaced with an AR buffer tube/stock, and the barrel is like 10 inches long. Super cool

My country adopted Negev ng7 which fires NATO 7.62 mm rounds as light machine gun and it is replacing 7.62. mm Bren l4 and 5.56 mm insas. Negev NATO 5.45 ng5 is used as saw for special forces.

That being said, once I eventually wasn’t an E nothing who was still wondering how I had ended up in the infantry, I absolutely fell in love with the SAW. 7-10 round bursts when you’ve got yours talking to the other SAW gunner makes you feel like you’ve got a massive dong. @@ifv2089 Haha, I only mentioned it since there is a significant difference between a KORD and a squad light machine gun. Especially a PKM since it's on the light side when it comes to LMG's. I enjoy the FN Minimi and the MAG just as much as any NATO Andy but the PKM is one of the best LMG's out there for sure. It might not be as robust as the NATO equivalence but any soldier knows that you do a lot of walking and carrying this equipment around. That's where the PKM is nice. Plus, you're also able to carry more ammo. The soviets got a winner with this one for sure.

The isralis and the vietnamese did not make a joint production line in vietnam in 1957. The plant that first named Z 11 and later renamed Z 111 was created in 1957. But at the time it was in North vietnam and they were supporting an insurgence against south vietnam and at the time the us was in support of south vietnamese. So IWI was not doing business with them. The vietnamese and the Israeli came to an agreement to build a joint production facility in vietnam in 2014. and worked on a highly modified IWI Galil ACE which had more Ak parts and was in 7.62 x 39 and used ak mags this starts being issued in 2019 they also make IWI Jericho 941 pistols. But no this did not start in 1957

Loved the lesson in Squad roles/numbers. What confuses me (as a non-military old guy) is these guns and lots of them claim a rate of fire that is absurdly high. But how would you and the squad carry enough ammo? Seems like you would run through what you carried in just a few minutes of a fire fight. What am I missing? Thank you for the videos, information, humor and content.
