Love the Edwardian clothes and aesthetic ❤️ Easily the most beautiful era for fashion 👍 The early seasons of Dowton were the best when Matthew and Sybil were still around 💕

so the fashion was still considered Edwardian despite the fact that George V has already been 2 years on the throne???

@@盧璘壽로인수 “Georgian” refers to early 18th C design. I think the label of “Edwardian fashion” held until WWI began. Then clothing fashions were termed by the decade.

@@盧璘壽로인수 If im correct, the Edwardian era lasted from 1900 - 1910. But I've also read it extends until the end of WWI. The Georgian era was during the days of Mozart 🌹👍

@@SamanthaN92 Indeed, you're right. The Edwardian era technically ended with the reign of Edward VII, but, for all practical purposes many--if not most--historians extend it to the start of WWI. In part because so much ended with that world-wide conflagration that it makes a convenient and resonant denouement. Although, there are some who equate the end of the era with the sinking of the Titanic, so it depends in part who you're talking to, or reading.

Ah…Daisy still as a scullery maid. She’s one of my favorite characters in DA. An honest, naive but also hardworking aspirational young woman who wants to learn and to be better, and she did in the end (also found happiness). This is the beginning of an amazing series. I’ve rewatch it at least three times during lockdown. PS : I can’t stop chuckling at the newspaper being ironed 😅

I think they ironed the papers to seal the ink, which was lower quality than we have now. If you didn’t do that, your fingers would be black and ink stained by the time you finished with the paper. So there was a practical reason, lol, otherwise it would seem a bit ridiculous.

A few years ago, someone gave me the Complete Downton Abbey on DVD as a gift. I never was able to watch it when it was first broadcast for various reasons and it took me another two years to finally sit down and watch the series. I am so glad I did! I am now on my second complete viewing, seeing so many things I missed before. What a wonderful program! Acting, writing, directing, costumes, attention to period detail. Really quite marvelous and wonderful!

I read the official behind the scenes book of Downton Abbey. In it Fellows explains that at the turn of the 20th century domestic servants were one of the largest employment sectors, more than coal mining. The economy radically changed due to the rapid advances in technology and many left service for better job opportunities. That also led them to be paid more to retain them. By the end of WWI the number of people who worked in service plummeted.

James was Robert's cousin, the son of the 6th Earl's brother, and heir presumptive to the Earldom so long as Robert had no male heirs. Patrick was his son and next in line to the title, also presumably Mary's fiancé. It was their death which propelled Matthew to become heir apparent

The sinking of the Titanic was in the newspapers. The telegram brought the message that both of the Earl of Grantham's closest heirs (the men the family had known all their lives) had drowned in the sinking. (That is why the next heir, Matthew Crawley, had to be located, a more distant cousin who was also a stranger.)
