Also known as a Prandle tube after its true inventor Ludwig Prandle. Pitot didn't have the static bit.

Toon, the vertical speed meter doesn't go below zero, which means the plane might be climbing more slowly, but it's still climbing.

But what if there is a head wind? Wouldn't the measurement of speed incorrectly display higher than actual speed, basically the difference of the correct and incorrect displayed speed would be the speed of the head wind?

In fact lets say hypothetically you were flying at 80mph and then there was suddenly a steady 100mph head wind wouldn't you (hypothetically) be going 20mph in reverse, while the instrument here would indicate what? 180mph?

On the real I can’t believe we still use pitot tubes after they’ve been linked to multiple high fatality air disasters. Why hasn’t this fragile system been replaced?
