my right side steat back rest goes forward when i lift the lever but the whole seat will not slide forward . i have to use the lever under the seat.

This recliner is but one of many designs. This one is a sector gear recliner with a locking pawl. There is the Taumel type rotary gear, German design. Then there is the linear type, which uses one or two cylinders, with plungers. How do I know? I worked at a recliner supplier for automotive seating, ran the life and reliability test lab for several years. I tortured and wore out recliners for many models. Best seat/recliner combination: the basic Recaro. Worst I encountered: the Mitchell bucket, used in circa '90 Suburbans... We called that frame the "lawn chair." Basic performance measurements for recliners: Radial play, recline effort, lift load, handle effort, for basic clocksprung sector types. Rotary wheel effort for Taumel. Static rear, forward torque to failure, and fatigue to rear tests performed. Then there is the life cycle testing, 10,000 cycles minimum is typical. Forward dump tests, also. Then there is the inertia lock forward test, for recliners so equipped. Best rule for design: Keep it simple. We had a recliner that had the dump feature for 2 door, worked great, compare it to one of the high end GM designs... the Cadillac sample we had was ridiculously complicated. They kept adding parts, until it worked. I was Dr. Destructo in that lab. I also designed test machinery that worked the first time I tried them out, unlike certain "engineers" up in the front office. You make it, I will revise a way to break it or wear it out. One last piece of advice: for any pin/v hole wear... Lithium grease. Use on door/hood hinges, etc. Use on latches. I proved it out in the lab.

so if the seat is free falling forward and wont stay upright that means the teeth are out of line with the stabilizer plate?

Sometimes the lever does not go down then I have to recline a bit more for it to go down. Is this normal?

I’m trying to convert my tiny Kei car into a camper. The back seats fold completely flat, but I need to fold the front passenger seat completely flat too if I want to lay out comfortably. It unfortunately only folds about 45 degrees. If I were to remove the stabilizer plate, which appears to be what stops the seat from folding further, would that possibly allow me to fold my seat completely flat?

Is the stabilizer made with metal or plastic?
