As an Italian, I think this is one of the best videos on RU-vid about Italy: it really encapsulates history, geography and economy in a very precise way.
Louis Sagarriga Visconti Nope, below my house, which is pretty much where the video shows it. And if my friend lives 10 km south of me, he’ll say that the south begins just south of his house. That’s how that works.
He also let the social demokrati of germany fight against the Italiens... idk what happened there. Watch Till he Shows the flaggs fight. At minute 6 and something.
God: hmm, Italy’s spawn is way to overpowered. Angel: why don’t we nerf Italy’s spawn and send thousands of humans to attack it which will cause Rome to collapse and split it into thousands of states which will remain divided for thousands of years God: sounds... good.
Kingdom of Italy se ci pensi quanti sono effettivamente riusciti a vincere contro di noi senza aiuti interni? E praticamente nessuno è mai riuscito a mantenere un controllo totale su dei territori italiani per più di 100 anni
That battle that we lost in 1917 is known to us as the "Disfatta di Caporetto". Austria and Germany pushed the Italian line down 150 kilometers, and it was such a huge loss that the name of the battle entered our language as a synonym of a catastrophic event or defeat. Even to this day, calling an event a "Caporetto" is like admitting it was an embarrassing loss.
Thank you! I see many people in the comments making jokes about this situation. I know they are joking and i like a to have a good laugh, but it's also really hearth warming to see foreigners beign supportive and really understanding this crisis we are going through. Greeting from Italy, hope you all stay safe there in the US.
@@albe3879 one key reason is believed to be the victory over and subsequent destruction of carthago, after which they got lazy and decadent because there was no number one enemy anymore. That made it easier for rivals on the empire's outskirts to attack, knowing that the Roman military had become weak because of their decadence
It is like modern games devs doing "Something is OP!!! NERD PLZ" they dont listen first, and then herfs the shit out of this thing, making it literally unplayable
Me, coming from Maremma; agreed! Tuscany is the only region that has a civil war with neighbouring cities within the region. It's actually quite amazing!
They all got infected because their navy is weak and couldn't provide them a way out through the Mediterranean so they had to go over the Alps which caused a funnel of people where social distancing was null and void and encouraged the spread of the virus. I believe this is where this video was going.
@@mattnorris7124 Italy has a great navy what are you talking about, Italy has the virus bad bc they get cloth and materials from china for the fashion capital of the world: Milan to design cloths and keep its biggest economy going: fashion
Italy has been my fascination since Assassin's Creed II. My dream is to travel throughout the length and breadth of Italy and see Florence, Milan, Venice, Rome, Vatican and every other city. Its a beautiful country and with beautiful people! COVID-19 may have taken many lives but it will never dampen the beauty of Italy! ❤️ Insieme per la Vittoria, Italia! Love, from India 🥰🇮🇳
Funny that you mention this game because I just took it back thanks to the steam sales (and the free time given by the quarantine) Just as good as I remember. This game really fueled my love for the Renaissance so badly
Bruh, trust me, we don't need videos such as this to get depression over our own country, we just need to get out of bed every morning to accomplish that.
In Roman times, the most important resource for fighting was manpower, which Italy had plenty of (thanks to fertile farmland, and Roman expertise at irrigation to create more). In WW2 the most important resources were coal, iron, and oil, which Italy had hardly any of.
I had an Italian boss from originally Chirie near Torino, he had a map of Italy in his office, he had a horizontal line at Rome and under that line was written with a sharpie "AFRICA"
@@theodore474 He was talking about modern day great powers. I'm pretty sure Hawaii and Alaska are part of the modern day USA, unless there was a recent civil war no one told me about.
I always thought Italy's geography was a little weird , it's a country surrounded by water and the water surrounding it is surrounded by land. No other country is like that.
Claiming the US invasion of Italy during WW2 was only possible thanks to Italy’s geography is partial, as the US army was aided and often preceded by partisans. Also, it was the Sicilian mafia (which had interest in the fall of fascism) that made easy for them to land in the first place
Well in Medieval and Rome Total War, Rome is literally the center of the map. So if you have a world-spanning empire. You should set your capital there to promote public order.
Would never say humble but warm yes. Italians never let you forget their cultural and historical legacy, in terms of soft power Italy is still a juggernaut. And that will never change.
They are italics, Napoleon even changed his surname at the time. However they just don’t care about most of these things, it just is what it is توما التشاد
Irrelevancy? Don't think so, by this logic Germany, Russia and Austria should have been irrelevant too. Italy highly influenced the world even during colonial times through its culture, and became one of the major economies and powers once unified. Not to mention its great maritime republics. Plus, as history showed, having colonies but not being able to sustain and manage them can lead you to many economic, political and logistical problems as happened to Spain, Portugal and France. Infact the most successful colonizers were the Brits and to a certain extent the Dutch, given their little size. Not to mention that nowadays the main colonial powers of the past are literally being colonized back by immigrants from the former countries they invaded. It's true tho that a late unification and the inaccessibility to the Atlantic crippled the enormous Italy's potential to be a global superpower like in the Roman times 🤷, this tho doesn't mean that Italy could automatically have become and remained a global power just because of colonies since in order to impose yourself on the world stage you still had to be strong in Europe. Only exception to this, again, are the Brits who despite having never had a major direct foothold on mainland Europe still managed through their economy, navy and diplomacy to remain relevant on the stage. Despite all of this, Italy remained the richest area of Europe at least untill the 16th- mid 17th century. Plus, the historical, economical and cultural contribution that constantly came from Italy since the ancient to modern times (unlike Greece who unfortunately stopped with the Byzantines) will always put Italy into a place of relevance
@@pedrosabino8751 everyone knows that many of the sailors at that time are Italian under the banner of other country genoa and venice was still important since the center of the world were still mediterranean (aamerica were not discover yet)
6:34 The battles on the isonzo river were actually a succes for italy; austrians were about to loose trieste, the only port of the empire and the its loss was possibly the event that would have ended war for austrians, so they called german's help and destroyed italian's army at caporetto, wich is also the name of the battle. It is not because of the mountains that they were defeated, but it was because italian army was weak compared to german army. Just to give you a scale, during ww1 winning a battle could have meant to go forward for 1 km, while the 11th battle on the isonzo river brought italian soldiers 10 km forwards.
Germany have used innovative tecniche to made the war they bomb italian front for an our instead a day and when Italian create bunker, the german forces attack and made a lot of prigioner.
@@avoig_3219 exactly, moreover they used to attack with small groups (wich is the precursion of blitzkrieg, the use of individual but fast divisions of tanks) and they used to circle out the trenches of italian soldiers.
King Emmanuel should sack Cadorna early. Most of battles lost at Isonzo were just ill-prepared. And the guy blamed middle rank officers and even soldiers for that.
John von Shepard that’s not true and you should know that. American troops were active in the peninsula until the very end of the war they simply couldn’t overcome he German defenses.
The geographical internal division also made separate beautiful cities to form, especially in the middle ages and Renaissance. Much cooler than having all the notable attractions in one city tbh
Hold on. The "Byzantines" "invaded Italy"? More like the Eastern Romans (i.e. Byzantines) wanted to retake their first capital of Rome and their lands from the Goths. Besides, many part of Italy were Greek colonies since time immemorial.
Yes but actually no. Greco-Gothic wars were disastrous for the people in Italy. They lasted for 20 years and plummeted the population down to 2-3 million people (before Roman levels). Goths and Byzantines in the attempt to control or retake cities they had lost, buned them down and forced the population to migrate to the coutryside basically starting Feudalism in the peninsula. At the end of that war Italy was devastated and you could say that the "Dark Ages" started at that point (at least here)
Giulio Patruno Yeah the Gothic War completely stomped Italy, only parts of the south were spared and the dark ages began for Italia. Justinian should have stoped at Carthage or Sicily.
@@Iapetus7849 wow, Greco-Gothic war/!? Who are you to name the Roman reconquest of Italy like that!? Firstly, Justinian was not even Greek (even if he was Greek, it won't change the things). Second, in his time the official language was Latin (again, even if it was Greek official back in his days it won't change the fact that is the Roman Empire). Damn, some people can't follow a country's line of existence. Because of people like you, history as science is broken!
@@leonardodavid2842 You forgot to mention another point. When China was asked about COVID-19 by the WHO back in October or November, China denied its existance, saying it was a rumour (or something like that). China lies a lot about its pandemics.
Italy 2000 years ago: Yea boi I can attack anywhere in the Mediterranean, I can defend from anywhere via sea or mountain The world 2000 years later: Mediterranean it is. Try extending any further lol
As an Italian, I think Italy's Geography will start to be relevant again when African countries will see a massive development in their economies (as in the case of Nigeria). Just in this case, the Mediterranean see will start to be the center of commercial exchanges between Africa and Europe and Italy will be the first touchpoint of this interconnection.
interesting way to think about it. If Africa was to be able to garner more capital and banking services in general, maybe utilizing mico loans or cryptocurrency, I could very well see this happening.
@user-wj8kv2rv4u for the western half of the continent, sure But for the eastern half, including Egypt, the Horn of Africa and the Indian Ocean? A lot of that will go through the Suez Canal, and Italy has important ports for that network, like Venice
Not really a nerf IMO When I saw "nerf", I was expecting a little known update The Dev snuck in by changing the maps terrain. This video outlines Italy's inherit locational trait of 'strong early game - weak late game'. Still a very good video. I give it a 48/52.
