I'm not even a cyclist, but watched the new Netflix documentary and searched out more cycling content on youtube. I found these Lanterne Rouge videos and now I'm properly hyped for the 2023 edition. But as someone still new to the sport, a lot of the terminology is confusing to me. I'd love to see a channel like this have a quick primer video on things like lead-outs, defensive satellites, punchers, etc... Unchained is going to bring a lot of curious people to youtube and I think Lanterne Rouge could get big numbers on a video (or series of videos) that lays out all the stuff Netflix kinda glossed over.

ouf. please, for the love of the sport, if you want to stick around, buy any tour de france history book and just read it. Thats literally what all cycling fans started with. they are kid friendly with lots of pictures and stories of the cycling legends. after that you will understand most of it and it will take you about 3 days to read in your free time. that will give you more info than some dumb amateur youtube video done for clout. its collected and written by lovers of the sport. this channel here is amazing, but the content is cycling fan directed. not really newcomer friendly.

Maybe watch some older videos, especially the sprint stages. LR does the absolute best job of showing you how the teams establish their sprint trains with the leadout men. He does a lot of stop action and labels the riders so you know exactly what he is showing to you. He talks a lot about strategy and does his research to bring us what the teams are trying to do. You are lucky to have landed on LR, especially days before Le Tour starts. It is great that Netflix did something but they 100% skipped over the Green, White and Polka Dot jerseys.

It is no coincidence, Jonas drops Tadej on big climbs. Whenever the road takes them above 1600-2000 meters, Jonas' performance hardly drops, whereas most everyone else's performance drops, incl. Tadej. This is the ONE advantage, Jonas has over Tadej. He's simply physically better in the high altitudes. This years TdF doesnt have a lot of VERY high altitude climbing, stage 17 being the one stage to Courchevel where Jonas has a chance of outperforming Tadej, until then, Jonas needs to hang on for dear life, imho! A nice recap though, I enjoyed it a lot! Looking forward to watching TdF 2023 with you :) 👊

Interesting point about the height. Personally I think it's either that, or Vingegaard might be slightly better than Pog when there are many difficult climbs in succession. It could very well be both: the altitude certainly makes whatever slight difference there is between those 2 bigger in terms of how much time one can get ahead. But if it's only the altitude, then Pog is the favorite this year. In this regard this Tour is gonna be very interesting to check if that's only the altitude or also the succession of difficult climbs where Vingegaard has a chance to outperform Vingegaard

Worth a mention that even with that crash scare, and despite sitting up at the end and letting WVA win, Jonas still took time on Pogi in the stage 20 ITT, showing either that Pogacar was very fatigued by the end from all the work he put in, or that Jonas just has that advantage in a time trial that is longer or perhaps hotter.

It was actually pogacar doing like ten attacks up and over every single mountain, putting everything on the line to try to make one of them stick and maybe make that amazing comeback. The problem is that we don't know exactly how much better Jonas is on the big climbs. So far he has dropped him on Ventoux, Granon (first mountain stage last year) and Hautacam, and possibly he could have dropped him on Alpe d'Huez if he needed to. If the trend is that every big mountain stage results in an average of 1 minute to Jonas then the Tour will be won by Jonas. I hope for the race that Pogacar is able to defend himself in the big mountains and that the Tour may first be decided on Col de la Loze. But no matter what, I think it is hard not to call Jonas the clear favourite before the race this year as he has also looked stronger on shorter climbs. I don't think Pogi will be able to drop him once and as you mentioned in your Tour preview video, he will take a maximum of 30 bonus seconds throughout the Tour. The time trial will probably be equal (Jonas better in the third week, but UAE with better equipment this season). So Jonas will only need to drop Pogi once for him to win the tour. If this happens early, the Tour could be decided quickly, but I'm sure we will still see Pogacar trying like last year.

Jumbo Visma demonstrated the biggest masterclass in team tactics for bike racing. But they got away with it because their opponent is also just a guy who loves to race and will follow anything. This year though, if UAE come more prepared and out to protect Pog it may be very different.

It’s definitely a more suitable route for Pogi but then again, wrist and no lead up races. And Jonas looks even better than last year. Will be interesting 🤩

@5:18 How much energy is used by the three riders in one round of attacks (with one attacker, Pog closing, and one drafting)? Is it: Vingegaard and Roglic each spend 1 unit when attacking, and Pogacar spends 2 units when closing? Or is it more like 1.5 units for Vingegaard and Roglic, since drafting uses up 0.5 units?

pog was overextended on granon and had much lactate that hindered his full potential on the afterward stages as jonas was magnificent this year till he was overextended by pogs attack in stage 4 paris nice and he was bang average on the next stages. this tour will be an interesting dynamic
@youbetu18
@youbetu18 Год назад
that one day doesnt have an effect on the entire tour afterwards. these guys arent like you and me. they have insane regeneration. paris-nice means nothing.
@yafetasegid6488
@yafetasegid6488 Год назад
@@youbetu18 how does paris nice cant matter? jonas was putting his best numbers in the build up race at o gran camino and he was flying on stage 4 paris nice when he attacked and dropped everyone bar pog, but after pog attacked him out of sight he tried to close for about a minute and overextended himself and cracked with 2 km of climb still remaining. the lactates catch up and lost to average riders that day and he was never himself the next days. mate too much lactate is not easy to recover from even for the best riders
@philipb.1950
@philipb.1950 Год назад
@@yafetasegid6488 bro really thinks lactat levels stay high when you go to your limit for days xd, also paris nice is 20 degrees colder then the tour, is a one week race and jonas did much lower numbers then befor and after that race, stop the copium
@youbetu18
@youbetu18 Год назад
@@yafetasegid6488 im sorry but you clearly know nothing about fitness build up during a season, nor do you know anything about lactate recovery. how long have you been in this sport? go back in time and look at TdF winners and their early season accomplishments. you will see there is NO CORRELATION. literally the only issue I see, and there is a clear correlation there in the past, is that pog was injured during the most important build up phase of the season.

Regarding why Pog lost the Tour in 2022: I think it was stage 11... and the crucial mistake I think Pog made was trying to counter every attack from Jumbo Visma. In my view he should have just focussed on Jonas and Jonas only. When Rog attacked... just let him go. He wouldn't have been a threat for GC at that point. I think Pog wasted too much energy countering all these attacks... probably coupled with insufficent food intake and dehydration. After that stage Jonas for the first time knew he could win against Pog and that self confidence showed in the other key stages.

I fractured my left scaphoid a few years ago (same as Pogi in LBL in April, but he also fractured his lunate bone). To me, this could be the most significant limitation of his performance. Two months is not enough recovery time for him to withstand three weeks of racing. Especially sharp attacks and out-of-the-saddle work at these elite-level wattages will take their toll (let's be honest, he didn't need that for Slovenian RR and TT Champs). I hope that's not true, though and, most importantly, he won't injure himself any further with that wrist 🙏

Whomever wins, I have a feeling the gap between 1st and 2nd is going to be a handful of seconds. I think Pogi is coming into this TdF with a better team and better preparation compared to last year. He knows what he can expect from Jumbo, but I'm not sure Jumbo know what to expect from UAE. It's going to be an intense TdF for both teams. I just hope we have less crashes overall, and no one retiring the race due to injuries.
