How Joshua Redman made a modern classic (from a Monk classic)

Joshua Redman recorded "Jazz Crimes" in 2003, a pretty significant departure from the work that made him famous through the 1990s. Was he committing a crime against jazz, as was implied in the title? Or was he just making rad music that everyone dug? Either way, the history of the song is interesting.
Sorry for going a bit on this one - went on a bit more than I meant to.

Thank you so much! I love Monk, and Evidence, and Just You Just Me, and Josh but I had not listen to this wonderful performance, excellent video!

The only jazz crime committed here is assuming the recording lines up with the lead sheet :p This whole album is insanely good and catchy, Jazz crimes and Oumou in particular. Enjoyed your historical comparoson and analysis *very* much!

I've just found your channel Tim. Totally fascinating, thank you. I especially love this Joshua Redman vid. Josh's solo at 3:36 reminds me of George Gazone's triadic chromatic playing on Tom Kennedy's CD 'just play'. ❤️

Just wanted to add that I had the pleasure of seeing Joshua's dad, Dewey Redman, playing all manner of reed instruments with Keith Jarrett on piano, Paul Motian on drums and the great Charlie Haden on bass. This was at UCLA's Royce Hall in 1974 when young Joshua was 5 years old(!). Sadly, only Keith is still with us and suffers from a medical condition that only allows him to play with one hand.

I love Joshua; I had an album that he did with Pat Metheny and I loved it so much. I especially enjoy “tears in Heaven” and the way he played the 3/4 number where the melody sounded like it was 2, but the rhythm was in 3; I think it was the 1st tune on the album. Joshua is so creative maan!

Jazz Cromer is an awesome song. I love using Moises to remove the drums and recording my own drum version. All be it. It has taken me about 40 recordings to stay on top of the changes also. I want drum solo to be stronger.

Tim, it's Keith JARRETT, not Garrett. And Paul Motian pronounced his surname MO-tee-un, not MO-shun. Other than that, good stuff in this video.

According to the Paul Motian documentary Motian in Motion, Paul did indeed pronounce his name as mo-shun

How can you judge sounds made by an instrument that will appeal to some and not others. You can judge a person's technical ability to play, but who are we to say what others should like.

A superior sheet for 'Just You, Just Me' can be found in The New Real Book 3. Eb is not the proper key for that tune in my opinion, C is the key. Forgetting the lyrics I think it's actually a pretty hip little ditty.

Haha yeah the Sher books are always my preference - I didn't have a copy of number 3 on hand unfortunately. And I agree - I really dig the tune.

Man just forget about the Real Book. Just watch the movie and listen to the chords. (Key is Eb but it also appears in G)

I think Lester Young recorded "Just You, Just Me" twice. Once in the '40s and then again in the '50s.
