Honestly the sneezing is more in line with Hades' personality and acts as a callback to the first Hades chapter where Hades sneezes away the 3 Sacred Treasures. Essentially it's like he's trying to do the same with the Great Sacred Treasure only for pit to reply with a sly "Excuse You" implying that this time won't go like last time. Smarter overall.

So, let me get this straight. Sakurai encouraged a liberal localization because many of the original Japanese jokes wouldn't work as well if translated literally into English. What we got was one of the most critically-lauded English dubs in Nintendo's library, beloved for its hilarious script and fantastic voice acting. Everyone loves it. ... And yet, this comments section is full of "LOCALIZATION = CENSORSHIP!" people who would have rather had a game that forces players to read subtitles for literally-translated jokes that wouldn't work as well in another language while players are simultaneously supposed to be focusing on intense gameplay with enemies and projectiles flying everywhere? Seriously? Also, I'd argue that the localized sneezing scene isn't supposed to make Pit "more serious", but rather make Hades "less serious" to better fit the tone of the game. This game (in either language) is far from serious, and Pit is no exception. Even the localized kicking scene plays up Dark Pit's "cool edginess" to ridiculous levels that no one (including Palutena) could take seriously. The only instance where the localized version is "more serious" than the Japanese version is the boxart, and that's just another typical "hardcore American Kirby" example that has no impact on the game itself.
@darkmega24ify
@darkmega24ify 6 лет назад
GOD BLESS THIS COMMENT. Jesus... all of these "THE ORIGINAL IS BETTER" crap is getting on my nerves. They're only thinking about themselves and their self satisfaction. They want the games to be one-to-one with it's origin that it's gonna make the game basically unplayable to those that can't understand the nuances of Japanese jokes. Honestly, is the game gonna sell well if they get their way? No, because the MAJORITY of the people can't understand the joke. Can it be explained to them so they can understand? Sure, but the joke and content is gonna lose impact. Losing sales = game devs stop making the games that YOU enjoy.

It actually reminds me a lot of how Working Designs handled their localizations. Sure, many of their titles edited themes and content that they felt wouldn't be received positively in the States (Silhouette Mirage comes to mind), but the translators also took quite a lot of liberties in adding their own brand of style and humor to their games' dialogues to better suit the cultural (and pop-cultural) differences between the countries. Check out the Lunar series (and their hilarious self-published strategy guides) to see what I mean.

Also, even of the actual voic doesn't change, some change of dialogue can be observed between english and other languages, for example in French/English. English dialogue, chapter 6 : "Somewhere within these ruins is Pittoo. - Uh ... gesundheit ? - No, Pittoo. As in, Pit Two. As in Dark Pit. Pretty great nickname i came up with, huh ? - But not as great as Ptooey, right ? Right ? Uh ... Anyway" French dialogue, chapter 6 : "Tip should be in these ruin. - What ? Which ... type ? - No, Tip. It's like Pit, but reverse. That's a well-fined nickname, no ? - But not as good as ... uh ... Copit, right ? Right ? Uh ... anyway ..." (Copit is a pun based of the word "Copie" which mean ... "Copy")

And Pit's way older than 14- they acknowledge the real-life 25 years that passed since Medusa's defeat, plus there's three in-game years that are skipped in chapter 18. That means Pit is likely upwards of 30 years old but acts much younger than a human would act at that age, since angels age slower than humans.

This is easily one of my favourite games out there, so it's interesting to see how it was changed. It's honestly localization done well, in my eyes. The game itself is bloody hilarious over here, and the tone is so consistent that the quality was equal to JP, and it's done naturally enough to *feel* like it was the original intent even if it isn't necessarily the case.

@@HaohmaruHL You make a lot of assumption my friend. And all of this in service of a subjective opinion and a superiority complex. Be careful on that high horse, I hear the ceilings are awfully low around here. Also to clarify, their statement on the voice acting doesn't have anything to do with the regional differences. The actors performances are quite good regardless of whether or not you believe any other region did better. If you think you can boil it all down to language then you clearly have no right judging a performance. Like any art, a good performance transcends the language barrier.

Actually, it seems the decision to make Hades the one to sneeze was to better match the game's animation. In Japanese, Pit sneezed, but the Great Sacred Treasure didn't move at all, yet Hades practically falls over. It's obvious that this is meant as a bit of a "prat fall of embarrassment", which is something more of a Japanese anime trope, and wouldn't be as easy to sync up to in English, so they decided to just make it so it was Hades sneezing instead, which still kept most of the meaning from Japanese.

Sometimes I feel that localization efforts aren't appreciated enough. I remember going through the dark times of the PS1 era when games were coming overseas with lazy, literal translations. The jokes didn't make sense and even the grammar struggled as Japanese's vague sentence structure doesn't match up one-to-one with English. Some, like Legaia 2, seemed to hold onto their Japanese roots, but others like Legend of Dragoon lost their charm. I used to be of the mind that character personalities should remain unchanged from their Japanese counterparts, but it turns out that doesn't hold well because of our cultural differences. For example, I noticed Mai Kujaku's (that is, Mai Valentine's) cutesy voice fits her seductive nature in Japanese, but in English, a deep, sultry voice was needed to have the same effect. In the case of Kid Icarus: Uprising, Dark Pit talking about his injury has a different effect for Western audiences. That is, while openness is treasured in America, Japanese value stoicism instead. I can't see the localization team *wanting* to make more work for themselves, so I'm sure they felt a change was necessary. I'm sure some people want to play the game just the way the original developers imagined it (and you can with a Japanese 3DS), but it's important that we value how different we really are. Things that a well-read otaku might see as hurting a game might be the difference it takes to win a few more fans in the West, and I'm okay with that.

I do think it's good to preserve the original intent of the creator, but to do so at all costs has always seemed short-sighted to me and rooted in stigmas and distrust towards the localizers, to where some would fear a censorship snowball-effect, like some conspiracy theory. I've never understood that. If the end-product is good, nothing of story significance is lost, and changes don't cause any kind of disconnect within the game, I honestly don't see the problem. I understand respecting the work of the original creators, but I can't imagine that those people would go into this not knowing full-well and respecting that changes can and probably *will* happen, and that they are OK with that. I can't honestly imagine they'd even do the job if they weren't OK with it.

There’s a lot of people here shitting on the English version of this game, when it was the humour that convinced me to finally buy it. Kid Icarus Uprising is an example of how to do localisation right. It kept the overly humorous tone of the Japanese game, but the jokes were simply changed due to them not really sounding as good or making sense in English. The voice acting is on par and the voices themselves fit the characters perfectly. I don’t see why people are complaining so much.

I'd take bad literal translations over censoring mild nude jokes out of the usual USA bigotry BS every day of the week. I gotta be honest. Not every localization is good, but this is one I like as much as what I saw of the Japanese version, with some parts being better in English. Half the time it feels like the "translate not localize" crowd doesn't even speak Japanese (though of course this isn't everyone) and doesn't understand that direct translations don't always work. Oh, and I never really liked Pit's Japanese voice.

@@Infelious They didn't need to take liberties in the same way I don't have to do the extra problems on a math test. Doing the extra problems can increase my grade if I do them right, and taking a good liberty in a translation can add in something you wouldn't get out of the original.
@RyuSpike
@RyuSpike 6 лет назад
Infelious Kazkari that is not how you use the word "appropriating". To appropriate means to take and use the stolen item. Basically think of it like somebody stealing your bike and riding on it. The word does not work if the work is not stolen or changed without Nintendo's consent. To say that the game series is an appropriation of Greek culture is far more accurate than saying that the localization is.
@MateuLeGrillepain
@MateuLeGrillepain 6 лет назад
@@Infelious Coming from a guy who usually plays in Spanish and Italian, these changes are often made BECAUSE they want to match the feeling something would give a Japanese player that a Western player would miss entirely if it isn't changed, such as "Nature" becoming "Viridi." Also, this happens all the time when translating TO Japanese.

Still censorship. The creator's decision is really bad. It's still far from the original idea and bastardized by localizers. Japanese voiceovers are better than the English ones.
@MateuLeGrillepain
@MateuLeGrillepain 6 лет назад
@@grindsauce3017 Actually, this isn't always the case. Yes, censorship CAN happen, and it sucks, but it's also possible for the original creator of anything to be involved in localization, such as Earthbound Beginnings (compare the Japanese VC graphics to the Famicom and NES versions). Secondly, once again, localization is often done to PRESERVE the original idea, like the "one-eyed monster" scene in Xenoblade 2. Italy changed the joke so that Nia says, "Fallo, fallo! FALLO! FALLO! FALLO! FALLO!" (The word means "do it," but can also mean phallus.) And I can list several voices better dubbed than VO: Bayonetta in English, Viridi and Pit in English (because I like my eardrums not pinched), Zelda in Mexican Spanish, everyone on Neo Genesis Evangelion in EU Spanish and Catalan (especially Shinji), Greninja in French, everyone in Xenoblade's English dub, Klonoa's Italian voice, the Latin American narrator in Kirby's Epic Yarn, and that's just Japanese media. The Italian dub of Steven Universe gives Garnet an actually good singing and speaking voice that can emote, South Park in Spain doesn't use computers to voice the four main kids, nearly every dub of The Simpsons (with the Canadian and Spaniard ones getting Matt Groening's praise), and the list goes on. Bad dubs still exist (I suffered throughout South Park: Scontri di-Retti), but so do good ones.

I think the English script is a lot funnier in a lot of areas and the voice acting was fantastic. Weebs should just do themselves a favor and actually learn and play in Japanese. This way they'd stop whining every single time a game is localized into English when it's clearly supposed to be marketed towards a general public, instead of just otakus who know all about Japanese culture to understand the context in a literal translation, which is like 1% of the playerbase anyway. I'm not saying all localizations are well done, or that this game doesn't have questionable decisions. But when you're complaining that the game is dubbed instead of only subbed, that "Black Pit" was changed to "Dark Pit", or make a big deal out of the boxart being slightly changed as if it ruined the whole gaming experience, the problem is clearly not the translation team here.

One curious name change I remember seeing someone on the Kid Icarus Subreddit mention is that the Chaos Kin from Chapters 20 and 21 is referred to as the "Chaos Envoy" or "Messenger of Chaos" in Japan. The English name just implies it was a creation related to Chaos (whoever that is in the franchise's universe), where the JP version implies that the thing was created as a message, likely a warning of... something. But that's on the naming side of things, not the actual localization itself. And while there are some things I feel the OG script did better (from the translations I've seen, anyways), the English version is still timeless in every other way and I couldn't be happier.

This game is severely underrated. It has great characters and dialogue, controls, music, overall it was so ambitious for what it was and I just feel that it isn't getting the attention from Nintendo it deserves. To be completely fair, with Sakurai being the creator, Smash 4 likely took a lot of his time after the release of this, and Smash Ultimate started development nearly immediately afterwards, so in that aspect it's entirely understandable, but I just wish more callbacks to the game would be made today. Smaller things that say they haven't forgotten about it. It really irks me because I just know this series would have a larger audience if it got as much love from Nintendo as, say, Fire Emblem. The idea of them believing this series isn't as profitable or won't be as liked if they push it further really saddens me.

Seriously, I wish more Japanese games would allow English translations to be more liberal and creative like Kid Icarus. I understand wanting to keep the spirit of the source material as accurate as possible, but these days I just feel like more direct translations sound awkward and distracting, given that Japanese is a MUCH different language than English. Remember Metroid: Other M? People were always giving Samus's voice actress hell for her monotone and emotionless performance, but that wasn't her fault. The director of the game, Yoshio Sakamoto, demanded that she portray Samus that way because, in Japan, emotionless female characters are seen as cool and badass. The guy just couldn't understand how terrible it sounded to English speakers. What we got was arguably one of the most painfully awkward and critically-panned video game performances in history. So yeah, I'm team localization. Plus, if it helps bring in more people from America to support these games, I'm all for it.

DarkMega 24 Well that's the thing - that's the best way to enjoy the media. You definitely SHOULD learn the language and the culture to appreciate the nuances in foreign media. Thing is, that's a huge time investment, and very little media is actually worth that much effort. Consuming in the closest possible medium to the original meaning is the best thing to do. In most cases, that's subs, and just deal with the fact you're not going to get all the references, but in this case, the l10n team has gone through the effort of translating the meaning of the original so natives of the target language can hopefully take away the same impression, making that (probably) better than subs.

Blapi (burapi) is also the Japanese nickname for Brad Pitt (BURAddo PItto). I'm pretty sure Black Pit was born because of that joke.

Pointless changes once again. From the constipated looking Pit on the western cover to the changes in dialogue they are unnecessary. All we needed were subtitles for the voice acting and a translated cover and voila ! Done and ready for sale. The game is for ages 10+ so the kids would be able to read if they wanted to and that's that.

3:16 was torture. I quit halfway through got repetitive and annoying after Medusa. Dark change terrible but at least not Blapi lol black piple would be racist. Hadeschu would have been a funny sneeze, yang ff4 battle cry achoo! Was priceless

Because I like reading with a bunch of chaos surrounding me, including JP!Pit and JP!Viridi pinching my eardrums.

Have you even played the game? You just sound like a weeb honestly. Reading the text while trying to play a game is incredibly difficult, especially if, you know, trying to actually pay attention to the game. The jokes, voice acting, character, and everything in the English version was absolutely goddamn superb.

@Vexa Grimwoe I'd be a hypocrite if I disagree with you since I practice my Spanish and Italian using localized games that usually aren't dubbed, but you can't say reading isn't annoying when you have a lot of it while lots of action os going on.
