LVL are indeed very strong. The weakest part of course isn't actually the wood, it's the glue's lifespan and resistance to breaking down over time.

@@bosse641 like most organic building materials, if it gets wet, it needs to be able to dry out quickly to avoid damage. LVL’s are a bit more susceptible, so they can & should be sealed prior to install, especially the ends.

It would be interesting, but I don't think it would mean much without other details. For example, if the beam was supported by two points 5 feet apart, I'd expect it to hold a lot more than if it was supported by two points 10 feet apart. ||||||

@@ae1ae2 I agree. However, they should give the general specification for load bearing. That way, even a novice designing a building gains some knowledge of the product.

It wouldn't really have any meaning because it would be dependent on so many different factors of the member. If you're really interested in structural properties of timber, read the NDS.

They're not going to give you any numbers because it's proprietary. They don't want competitors to know what they're performance capabilities are. So they give general info like a small car.

@@hotdogs5265 These laminated pieces are much stronger than a solid piece of lumber. Unless you are building your house from Oak at a cost of 30 times a normal house.

LVLs are stupidly strong, I’ve um made my own with plywood and construction glue.

Good tour of the factory that makes laminated veneer lumber but the strength demonstration would have been improved if they could have shown what a comparable solid wood beam would look like and its comparative cost. LV lumber is supposed to be stronger and smaller than a comparable solid wood beam. Also the poplar tree it comes from doesn't have to be as large or as old as the species of trees needed for solid wood lumber.

Very enjoyable video to watch. Sure wish they would have said how many pounds they were hoping to reach before it broke. Then tell us how many pounds it took before it actually broke. I do believe it passed but I would still like to know how much it exceeded the magic number.

I have to wonder if that's a trade secret and that's why it wasn't stated. Either that or there may be legal issues if they state that these could reach a load in excess of their advertised load. I'm sure overpriced lawyers were involved regardless.

@@jblyon2 ... since lam-beams (engineered lumber) are now part of the building code it would have been nice if they shared the "book spec" against what their test beam stood up to. Also comparing it to the typical dimensional lumber it's replacing. After all, this is why most of us are using the stuff.

What's the difference between LVL and plywood?

Jathan Gilbert ... plywood is *almost* the same product as far as layers of wood, but LVL is select pieces of wood without voids, uses different glue, and is certified for structural use when done. Basically plywood is NOT certified for structural strength and it's also not commonly available more than an inch thick just for that reason.

@@brianglade848 The pandemic concerns everyone - if this video was made during the pandemic - masks are a necessity. If the video was made a long time ago - that was pre-Covid. It is important that everyone wear a mask, physically distance and follow health directives.
