We explore how the US artist changed house music.
See the feature on RA: www.residentadvisor.net/featu...
The term "deep house" has come to mean many different things to many different people, being applied to everyone from Disclosure to Fred P. But the roots of the sound can be traced back to the musical innovations of one man: Larry Heard. In this video, we look at the techniques behind some of Heard's most iconic and influential music, explaining how he gave house music a sense of depth.
Narrator: Moxie
Writer: Matt McDermott
Editor: Sophie Misrahi

I reckon that the 'deep' part of house is the part that makes you feel just slightly sad/nostalgic/longing, but the song still makes you feel good. A strange blending of sadness and euphoria.

I still can't get over how amazing the 80's and 90's were in terms of quality electronic music. Those were 100% the decades to be alive. It was a total revolution in music and it opened up the gates to anyone with a passion for music to make it themselves. That Juno 106 bassline with a lush Korg M1 pad and a TR909 beat is enough to take you away to another world. That is the beauty of house. It's stripped back to the very basics, but yet it is so powerful and interesting to listen to.

Can confirm. It was more fun in the '80s and '90s because (1) we didn't have phones, and (2) we weren't all facing the DJ -- in fact most people weren't paying attention to the DJ at all. People went to dance clubs to dance.

Nowadays people model their happiness based on how the world sees them i,e, their social media identity. Back then in the 80’s people did not had that concept, once you were in the party that was all that mattered really, there was no notion of telling the world were you where and what you were up to, hence, giving out human brains more headroom to actually enjoy the present moment. Nowadays sadly is not the same, people are not only wary of how they must “portray to the world” they are also constantly living in fear of the big brother eye, scared of being filmed and mad fun of online etc... the digital age is kinda goodish but not entirely perfect...

I’ve read that Heard was influenced by jazz and gospel, but no references to classical music influences. No doubt all contemporary, commercial music is the result of cross-cultural collaboration, but Why this imaginary connection between house/techno and white European classical music? The idea that Black music is legitimate art ONLY as it is compared to the European ‘Masters’ is a very subtle form of racism. It is IMPORTANT to understand that House, Techno, Disco, Funk, Soul, Rock, Blues, Jazz and yes even Country are rooted in the music of Black and Afro-Cuban cultures. Otherwise, you do not understand the music, and are only ‘whiteplaining’ - NOT educating - and are deepening the injustices done to those who never received due credit, nor compensation for their music.

I was referring to strictly his production and the genre defining "Can You Feel It". I'm well schooled & studied in DJ culture and the roots. Yes mixing and party culture has firm FIRM roots in the NYC underground. Mancuso & Loft, The Garage and Leven etc etc.... but for production and "deep house" as a genre...Mr. Heard is GOAT in my book.

Altered states on the dance floor.... after hearing Mystery of Love at the world famous Zanzibar Club in Jersey. That was the first time a track hypnotized me to sway and roll within the currents of the rhythm.... I haven't stopped dancing yet.... Thank you Larry....

shizzlers0135 Larry Heard wasn't ahead in his time, he was in his time! I was 16 in 1989 and house, deep house or more generally techno weren't for just happy fews. On radios and dancefloors you could listen to it, not only in USA, I'm french and this is my teenage music! The fact is that, nowadays, few house music makers are really in their time or ahead in it, most of popular ones only recycle without any creativity. Luckily we can still hear very good house music but not in mainstrem medias like the 80's and 90's. For my generation it was a kind of golden age! But I still looking for good sounds and there is a lot, I just have to go to it because it doesn't go to me easily! Actually it's a more exciting quest...like a treasure hunt!!! Sorry for my broken english. Have a nice day!

It annoys me when someone labels a song deep house when it really isn't. I hope it opens up the discussion amongst artists and fans to perserve the essence of deep house.

This doesn't even scratch the surface. Chicago Larry Heard music goes much deeper than a 10 min video. You just had to of been alive and living in Chicago 1984-1996 to get the core of what Larry and a few others were doing at that time. Everyone is all Frankie and Ronnie, but things would not be the same w/out Larry Heard.

M Riley I agree, but everyone SHOULD have been all Frankie and Ronnie.....especially Ronnie. Larry Heard brought the musicianship. No doubt about it. However, Ronnie = “Deep House”. Ron Trent said it perfectly.

a lot of drummers turn out to be very talented musicians, one of the most beautiful songs for me is "Heather" by Billy Cobham, who was also a drummer
@oneonetwothreefiveeight

i say musicians i meant more the melodies and compositions they come up with, that aren't solely the percussion and rythm, not that a drummer doesn't count as a musician
