Hmm... So how does learning English change you? Or how did learning English change Natsumi? I think the answer is that she doesn't feel like she's Japanese. So it was liberating? She could choose who or how she wanted to be? She can choose to be less conforming to any particular nationality or culture. The thing is she was learning English in America as a teenager. If she had learned English in Japan as just another subject in school, it likely would not have had this effect. So it's not just the language. It's the whole experience and the culture.
