How Lebanon Ran Out of Electricity

Lebanon’s electricity sector has been notoriously dysfunctional for decades. But the country’s crippling economic crisis and inflation of more than 200% are forcing many in the country to make impossible choices, with some finding themselves having to decide between food or electricity. We followed a pregnant mother whose family has been living on two hours of state-provided electricity a day for almost two years.

Sri Lanka is in trouble from corrupted politician. Not easy to find someone who put country first, but not impossible. IMF will help manage Sri Lanka out of the crisis because they will put a lot of restriction and cut financially, and your country will be out. Many countries were like yours but eventually can get out. This Lebanon thing isn’t just corrupted politician. There is religions heavily involved which make it impossible to fix. Lebanon will never be fixed. Israel/Palestine will never have peace. It’s religion and people just dig in. Zero compromise when it comes to religion. Zero compromise = no way out.

I need to add one more thing. Get two terracotta pots one large and one small, sand, rocks and white cloths. Place the small terracotta pot inside the large one making sure that there is space for the sand between the two pots. Fill the space with sand and place the rocks on top of the sand. Place the food inside the small pot (you may need several large and small pots, sand and rocks according to how much food that needs to be refrigerated by these pots.) fill the space between the two pots with water. Then, cover both pots with the wet cloths. This method is another form of refrigeration for when the electricity goes out or you simply don't have a refrigerator.

Has Lebanon consulted with other Middle Eastern countries about implementing solar power, a better electric grid supply and what is being done about it? The structure of the buildings needs to be rebuilt according to the natural lighting of the sunrises and sunsets. Bigger and more windows means more natural light flowing thru the homes and apartments which help saves on electricity.

And the crazy thig about all of this is that Lebanon is one of the most highly educated countries in the world. And if you look at all the European cars, & quite recent apartment towers in the various footage, Beirut was one of the most middle class & cosmopolitan cities in the middle east, outside of Israel. The problem is that the government, since the end of the civil war, was made up of the same sectarian elites behind each religious group that was behind the civil war in the first place. And they built an economy based upon a gigantic banking Ponzi scheme, entirely reliant on imports, rather than one with any manufacturing sector or meaningful primary or resource sector at all. Where Lebanon built a huge financial sector based on bringing in cash from both the surrounding countries, & from the wide international Lebanese diaspora, from Aus, US, UK etc. Attracting their money via above market & unsustainable interest rates. And part of the mechanism of pegging the Lebanese pound to the US dollar relied on this system continuing uninterrupted. It worked for 30 years or so, & Beirut had a large & educated middle class, much of it dependent on the financial industry, & a world famous nightlife with many nightclubs that regularly had international DJs of all genres playing at them. This nightlife was part of the tourist appeal, along with the weather, the environment, the culture & the history. But behind all this was alot of corruption, creating alot of underlying problems & discontent, which came to a head with the revolution protests. This affected the image of stability of the Lebanese banks. Then Covid decimated tourism, decimating a large attractor of foreign currency that was a major component necessary to keep the banks afloat & the Ponzi sustainable, & pay for imports. Then the banks started loosing inflows of money both from tourism, then from the many external bank depositors. Then the explosion at the port, a result of corruption & incompetence of the ruling elite, decimated the only major port, the countries biggest grain storage, destroying a huge percentage of its grain reserves, & it destroyed many of its neighbourhoods, & many of its buildings, including those new & glittering apartment skyscrapers. This destroyed sentiment in Lebanon being both a safe place for many to live, so many young & educated that were able to started leaving. And as well as safe place to store money, that image was destroyed in an instant. So external depositors withdrew their money until they couldn't, the flow of new foreign money stopped. The Ponzi was revealed to be a Ponzi & immediately collapsed, collapsing the banking system with it. And the Lebanese pound lost its peg to the US Dollar. With the entire banking system collapsing systemically. And the Lebanese pound lost 90% of its value in a quick space of time. Of course the countries sectarian elite & corrupt who were behind this problem in the first place, pulled their money out before the collapse. And then the hyper inflationary spiral began.. Couple all this with rising global inflation, particularly in developing countries, and its easy to see how a highly educated middle class society can collapse into absolute deprivation in a quick space of time. I'm a New Zealander, used to live in Melbourne for 7 years pre covid, & I've worked with many Lebanese in construction, as there is a large Lebanese population in Melbourne & Sydney, so much so that at one point Australian Lebanese introduced Rugby League from Australia to Lebanon, & formed a Lebanese Rugby League team, based in Beirut, that i believe played in the Rugby League world cup, & didn't do too badly. i lived in a gentrifying inner city suburb with a large Lebanese population & many Lebanese restaurants & cafes. They are some of the nicest people I've come across. And i had friends who had been to Beirut before its collapse. Beirut was a place with many people that loved to party & entertain, an oasis of music & entertainment in an otherwise deeply conservative middle east. At one time I even wanted to go there, if i ever made it to that part of the world. It's so sad to see such a cool place fall mostly to the corruption & incompetence of a parasitic elite, & a whole lot of bad luck. I don't have much optimism for the next few years for any of the world to be honest, we are all going to see major inflation, recession, struggle, loss of value of investments, savings & superannuation, & a continued & intensified transfer of wealth to a technocratic parasitic elite. But i hope that the people of Lebanon can come out of this with if not a country fully intact, at least their spirits united through struggle & love for their land & people, & unite as one to rebuild their country anew, better & more united, free of the sectarian elites that led their country to this point of collapse in the first place.

The piece references the pre-2019 exchange rate for the Lebanese pound and than the current black market rate. It states that people are still paid at the earlier rate. Is this because the Lebanese government is refusing to admit that there has been inflation & is trying (from the sound of it, unsuccessfully) to use price and wage controls to keep the Lebanese pound stable?
@jdabull

It's called pegging though no currency is a free floating in absolute term. I do not know much about the numbers in the Lebanese economy, I'm sure their reserve has ran out if not already. I can't think of any in terms of Lebanese products/services that has a comparative advantage, likely tourism was a current account booster which has been gone since the Covid. Best of luck to the Lebanese and others in the world who are suffering due to liberal monetary policy and wealth shifts.

Sorry but i feel like you didn't shed light on the actual crsis but explained the inflation's effect on the electric crisis. In terms of governmental electricity in lebanon the lebanese people pay 2020 bills now when we are in 2022. Two there have been multiple projects that have been funded by foreign countries that certain memebers of the government have stole. Three you didnt mention the electric "ships". Four the Chinese and irani projects that the goverment refused because parties fought over how to split the profits in other terms who gets to steal them. Five you didn't mention the private electric generators in zahle that now have 24/7 electricity and that they were more than ready to give 24/7 electricity to the rest of the region but the goverment refused becuase of certain parties. other private electric plants tried to scare them off by shooting daily at the 24/7 plant in zahle but to no avail. Im sorry but the title of this video compared to the content fell short in terms of shedding light and enlightening those of which dont know about the lebanese electric crisis. That's my opinion but much respect to you and your work.

we are going through the same situation right now in Pakistan. the electricity and fuel prices are way out of bar for a common man's wage and with rising inflation and greediness of the current government, its almost impossible to work in a developing nation. barely 8 hours of electricity and asking money from other countries is just adding to our debts. although people do manage stuff using solar panels and UPS but i feel so bad for the poor as they have no way around and have to face dumb decisions of the politicians.

Althought its currency was quite strong in the beginning, the constant switching of powers ( martial law, islamisation of zia, the bhuttos and sharifs fueling nepotism) imran khan still did way better. Money laundering and more imports than exports, hatred of muslims after 911 are all contributing factors. There is a lot of inefficient things happen in their way of life. 1. If you poor never use car as your main transport. Sell your car, buy motorcycle and bicycle. Motorcycle is up to 10x less operational and maintenance cost. Yes its 10x. 2. Dont use car taxi everyday, buy motorcycle or use motorcycle taxi 3. Who the heck run their country electricity with diesel? Its very expensive. Use coal power plant instead. Lebanon goverment should make it.

My 26th summer is proving colder, wetter and windier than I would have asked for, but not at all uncomfortable. Seems to me that for whatever reasons the region in general is consistently unstable in terms of rulership, more so in recent decades. I won't pretend to know, but can't feign total ignorance either. Suffice to say that financial collapse could well be a symptom of, or perhaps an instrument of warfare in and of itself. Motivations of other people, powers or interests are neither mine or yours to know for certain, what's behind the curtain?
