Dave recently said there is no deep personal meaning to the lyrics & 41 may or may not have been the 41st song

Truth is, artists change ‘what the song is about’ all of the time. The only thing that is important is what the song means to you. Artists are within their right to assign multiple meanings to one piece of art, or zero meanings… they can also change the meaning. This is what art is about. As Dave Matthew’s recently stated (he is not the first, or 41st for that matter) once art is out into the world, the artist no longer owns it. The people own it and the people determine what it means to them. That what makes art, art. You can always ponder, argue, deliberate, of just think about what ‘the song is about’ or what it means or what it meant but what only really matters is what it means to you.
@razorbeard6970

Well, the artists still own it as they created it. The people possess it in a different way. I like how your essay is about the changing relationship everyone has with music.

"What Dave says [in 2015 about the lyrics] contradicts what he told Rolling Stone magazine around the release of the Crash album that #41 was about a lawsuit/lost friendship w/ manager Robb Hoffman (Referenced in, "Music For The People” by Nevin Martel). Early versions of #41 were played with improv lyrics, w/o a set theme, all throughout 1995. The final version was recorded in early 1996 then released on "Crash" in May of that year."

It was my freshman year at U of I. (Champaign) 1995. Satellite was out. Heard that “Satellite” band Dave Matthew’s was coming to Lincoln Hall. One of those spots you take 100 classes. Then the word said he was doin an acoustic show with some guy named Tim Renolds. Always loved music. Always loved shows. Was a classically trained pianist. Then 🤯 My life has never been the same. 😊

I've been a DMB fan since '92 and saw many shows in the early days, that song had so many different lyrics to it over the years, because Dave adlibbed almost all of it in the studio. Hence the reason why its not tied to any deeper meaning other than "loss".

Funny I discovered DMB when Satalite hit X103 when I was in the 8th grade. While I love every genre of music from country western to rap & every genre in between DMB soon became my favorite band kicking The Final Cut by Pink Floyd out of my fav album replacing it with Crash. I'm now a KRUSTY 45 LOL & still have DMB as my favorite band & #41 is my favorite song. I think like many DMB fans 41 has a significant place in our hearts that serves as a personal representation of a timeless place in our lives that will always remain there.

I know that we live in this area of explaining everything and finding the reason behind everything but please stop..Please don’t explain a song or say what a song is about, Because when you listen to a song you have a special relationship with it and you assign meaning to The lyrics and the music but not hearing that this song is about a former manager just really screws up the experience...

@philiphopper4885 Год назад
Fake video. In a recent GQ interview Dave explicitly asks for someone to tell him what #41 means, admitting the song has no real meaning and that he’s not even sure if it was their 41st song.
@JDel709
@JDel709 Год назад
I would say that his interviews and sound clips from 25 years ago probably were correct in the original meaning of the song, and Dave has long forgotten it or moved on from those feelings, so he no longer attaches a particular meaning to the song. Also artists tend to get tired of talking about song meaning or stories behind songs, so they say they dont know what its about.
@philiphopper4885
@philiphopper4885 Год назад
That’s huge speculation brother. I’m just relaying what Dave has said as of 2023. And that is that the song has no meaning. There’s nothing more to speculate.
@JDel709
@JDel709 Год назад
@Philip Hopper Not really speculation that for years he told the story that is relayed in the video. Also in that GQ interview, when speaking of #41 he mentions how he likes the idea that once you put a piece of art out there, you don't own the meaning anymore. That statement lends itself to the idea that he has long forgotten the emotions behind the song. Anyway, no reason to debate, but good to talk about stuff like this.
@philiphopper4885
@philiphopper4885 Год назад
The idea that art loses its intended meaning when you release it to the world is not a new idea and not unique to Dave. RECENT interviews Dave talks about the song having no meaning. Why are you hinting on what he’s said in the past? You’re choosing to believe a certain narrative that directly contradicts what Dave has literally just said only a few months ago.
@JDel709
@JDel709 Год назад
@Philip Hopper When looking at something you did 30 years ago, do you have a better memory of why you did what you did now, or would you have been able to better explain the circumstances 28 years ago when it was fresher in your mind? The song was written almost 30 years ago, and since that time Dave's life has completely changed in almost every aspect, and I'm sure his emotions about the song have changed. If someone asked him about something like Halloween, do you think he would go into detail about his proposal being turned down three times and being frustrated by the situation? Probably not. He would probably say something similar to what he said about #41, as he has completely moved on from that part of his life. Point is I would think his comments about the song in the 90's were probably closer to the true meaning behind the song than his comments in one interview 30 years later after he has played the song almost 1,000 times in concert.
