If you haven’t seen the Ip Man series, yet, YOU HAVE TO! You can buy the Ip Man series from the RU-vid Shop that appears at the bottom of this video OR you can watch the entire Ip Man 1 film for free on RU-vid. How would you rank the Ip Man series?

first movie is one of the best martial movie I ever watched and absolutely must see if you somehow interested in theme. Those that came after quite dramatically lowered the quality bar. Still fun to watch - but these are "popcorn movies", with no pretensions to greatness

On the last breakdown the boys talked about the cons of punching someone's face without gloves, but looking at what we saw here as an example, can I assume that going for the body makes it more hand friendly?

So, in Chinese martial arts, yin and yang and trigrams and more play a significant role in life and martial arts. That being said, you attack yang with yin and attack yang with yin. In order words, you use your knuckles or elbow on the sternum or diaphragm. Sometimes yang against yang happens like elbow to elbow or knee to knee, but that isn't effective as in both people end up hurt or the person with stronger pain tolerance or stronger bones wins.

It always works best with initial contact. Just blasting in doesn't work against experienced opponents because they can sidestep your attack to the opening you now created and knock your ass out with a hook! That's why modified Wing Chun doesn't work well against boxers. This is why initial contact is necessary to determine the type and direction of the attack. Moving him back can do two things. It will break his structure, and cause him to open himself to attack.

I’ve seen it used in an amateur MMA match and I don’t think anyone expected the fella to win. He used it perfectly, much as you describe, a constant annoyance to throw the other guy off his game, reposition him for more traditional MMA strikes/counters and when his opponent got annoyed enough to push in to it, a cover for a rear naked choke to end it. It was quite entertaining.

There are 4 different styles of Wing Chun. The movie you are evaluating, is based on the simplest form the "108". There are 3 more much more advanced forms. They will never allow the 4th to be filmed, and showen to the public. Wing Chun is a highly effective martial art. Thank you, for taking the time to Appreciate it..

I agree with you. I was blessed to have a teacher who taught me principles and he learned at least 3 different expressions from the system and know one of them came believe it or not from a family korean system which is very closed door and his teacher from that was from a woman who was 5 ft tall. He told me she has a very powerful internal base and excellent rooting

There’s another very important aspect to wing chung chain punching and all other wing chung manoeuvres, that are ofttimes overlooked. And that is the combination of wing chung anatomical structure and forward force(thought force) combined with relaxed muscles. The idea is to be able to cultivate and maintain this technique- or feeling- during the stress of combat or battle. This concept came about because of the origins of wing chung. Originally invented by a woman named Ng Maui, with a view to be able to take on a physically superior man. Long story short, if the lady won her battle, she wouldn’t have to marry said male opponent- or so the story goes! Regardless, in my early days of practicing this marshal art, I was taken aback by how some of the smaller opponents- in particular the female’s- felt so large and powerful coming forward. I remember(at the time) thinking this couldn’t work in any other fighting style unless yu was able to incorporate the internal side of things. I have to say, it is an amazing and extraordinary feeling when yu can use this seeming elusive force, even with regards to everyday tasks like lifting, pulling and pushing heavy objects. Basically switch the muscles off and let them hang heavy off the body in a relaxed state, whilst moving the structure(skeleton) with intention and focus. Put this behind any form of manual labour, fighting manoeuvre and be amazed at the power one can generate with seemingly minimal effort required. If that all makes any sense..!! I think some really good boxers use this technique without even realising. Especially when loading up hooks and even straight jabs. Using the weight and momentum of the body to fire off limbs with less emphasis on using and tiring out the muscles. Anyway, enough rant from me! Great video. Thank you 🙏🏾

I do muay thai and the straight blast is very useful. Muay thai can be a game of balance, and punches are highly underrated. Closing distance with a straight blast is ideal because most combos in muay thai are 2-4 count since most strikes are delivered slow and heavy. You can also easily transition to clinch work and elbows and deal some severe damage. Wing Chun in general needs to be explored more in MMA contexts.
