Thank you very much for this. It did distract me from "other news". I did have to watch it twice, well explained but lots of informarion I live up north and have never seen lightning that you show. In 65 years have never seen red sprites either! I have noticed in the last 5 years, that we have not gotten the number of storms that produce lightning and the intensity of the storms is reduced. We had on major storm last summer. Wondering if anybody else is noticing the same. Stay safe everyone! From storms and viruses!
Dude, I’ve just got to say : I love your soul. Courageous genius, naturalist, mad scientist, musician, composer, photographer, teacher and artist all wrapped up with the heart of an 8 year old boy.
Erm.. why don't we say "college".. The hormonal flirty teenyboppers in HS would just distract and tease him.. ..and possibly even get him in BIG trouble..
Me before I started watching Pescos Hank: Storm cool Me after: Sits by the window during a storm with notebook recording every type of lightning and explaining everything to my family that's tired of it
Pecos Hank, bringing us peaceful images, the best guitar licks and relevant information. Better than ANY news outlet. Thank you and Stay safe out there, pardner!
not all teachers but some is the problem .... some just say open the book and teach ur self others explain in a more detailed easy to learn way thats why i like hanks videos
@@zachperez8937to be fair, if science class isn't interesting that is the teacher's fault. I was barely passing high school chemistry until I swapped schools and had an interesting and interested teacher, and ended up with 98% and loving every class.
Your explanations are incredible... As said by other commenters, no one has been able to successfully explain lightning in such a clear and concise way that I've ever seen before. Awesome video!
Hank, the more I watch your videos, the more I appreciate your heart - your love and passion for music (which is awesome by the way!), storm chasing, weather, and even critters of all kinds. Thank you making this great video that helped me understand why when I was a kid (I'm still a 56 year old kid) I was struck by lightening while watering some yearling heifers under a chicken house with a sheetmetal roof on a dairy farm. My red heeler and I never should have been there. We both we standing under a soffit watching the storm, the torrential rain, and yes, the lightening show. The thing I remember the most was watching the hair on my red heeler suddenly rise up off her body then seeing the hair on my arms rise up then BAM! All I saw was red, the blood under my eyelids. It was so bright and hot! I ended up face down in manure ten feet away from where the lightening struck a hole in the roof behind us about 3x3. The inseam on my pants was blown open all the way down to my rubber boots which I was thankful I was wearing that day or I don't think I'd be writing these words to you. And thank goodness, my red heeler Queen Bee, lived too. Blessings.
medical studies have shown that a lot more people get struck by lightning than hospitals are fully aware of. Often those presenting at ER with lightning-strike symptoms are not recognised because medics erroneously believe that getting struck by lightning is a death sentence, and that lightning strike symptoms will mirror any other form of electrocution. Lightning strike victims who are not hit on the head have a very high likelihood of recovering with no, or minimal, lasting symptoms. I was struck on the arm and leg, and the medics were convinced I wasn't, because I didn't present with the symptoms they expected (of standard electrocution). But the charge with a lightning strike mostly discharges over the outside of the body, instead of entering the body and passing through it like electrocution from an electric device or the mains, which involves physical contact with the electrical device. Even though they could see something was wrong with me on the heart monitor, they thought I'd had a mini stroke, and wouldn't believe me. It was only after looking into the medical literature that I found that most medics have no clue what the real symptoms of lightning strike are, (there's actually a paper covering the fact that most medics when surveyed were found to be ignorant) and that my symptoms were entirely typical of a lightning strike victim. And after that I found many other people who had experienced the same thing. Lightning strikes are actually very common, and not as dangerous as you'd think. The real danger comes if the strike hits the head first. Or passes through the heart. Then it is more likely to be fatal.
😂 I was thinking how can this not be an amazing video. Pecos's god tier narration and quality video editing + one of nature's coolest phonema. Can't wait for the red sprites video, that should be good.
Hello! I'm fourteen years old, and I've been fascinated by storms my whole life. I stumbled across your youtube channel a few months ago and just wanted to say thank you for all of your explanations and incredible footage of weather phenomena. I appreciate your effort to explain what in some ways will never be understood completely. Happy trails!
As someone who is absolutely frightened of lightning, i found this video really interesting! The way you explain everything in great detail, yet is easy to understand is excellent! It’s made me want to learn so much more about lightning to eventually overcome my fears! Next time we have another thunderstorm here in the UK i’ll definitely be watching it! Thanks Hank 😄!!
My family does this all the time (answering "yes" or "no" to questions with expected "either-or" answers) ... this will be a happy addition! Though to be honest, I guess nobody else in my family really cares about weather in general.
I have always been fascinated by lightening and thunder storms. I love the wind and rain that comes with them and the temperature changes. Nature is so amazing!
Thanks, I needed this. After 2 weeks of 14-17 hour days plus 2.5 hrs travel/day I came home early (13 hours of work) and was happy to be notified of your video; a blessed distraction. Stay safe my friend.
Came across your Channel and LOVE IT! Our home was struck by a large tornado two weeks ago and I have been fascinated ever since! My family is safe (we were in a closet under our staircase). Love learning how all of this stuff works. Your channel is amazing!
By far, out of all of the channels that portray my interests, weather being in the top 3, Hanks channel is by far my favorite to watch. It’s like watching “how its made” or “how things work”…. For weather 😁. His enthusiasm is very genuine and inspiring. Now… if I could only afford a better camera I might quit my day job.
You could narrate a synopsis on HVAC condenser coils and make it interesting and compelling. Thank you for taking the time to make such an informative video for the secluded masses riding out the invisible Cat V storm named Covid-19 that is ravaging our world. Prayers for all. Stay safe and well.
Lol would that normally be boring? Refrigerators are quite fascinating, now I'm a curious about HVAC condenser coils 😂. Not to belittle your point, totally agree.
You won't be disappointed! If you look around, you'll find that lots of his photography grace many media - even the covers of movies! (The Last Witcher's cover with lightning is Hank's work.)
You are my favorite weather science/natural science guy on the internet. Your video quality is top notch, your demeanor is chill and enlightened, and your guitar playing is quite the addition to an already diverse set of talents you have. You are a modern day Renaissance Man!
I always feel smarter after watching Hank , love it ,love it , love it, bring on some more please! Stay safe Hank you're a beacon of light in our dark times!!!
@@PecosHank I reckon I clicked the notification in under 1s from seeing it appear on my screen. Certainly worthy of a slow-mo camera to record my hand moving the cursor at lightning speed! ;) Hehe. :)

Long time viewer… Watching this one for the first time three years after the fact. Best overview of lightning ever. You know your science and you’re a unique musician too! Peace.
I have been struck twice on the ground and a few times in the air. I was towing a aircraft into it's hanger just as a large storm was approaching. The lightning hit the tail, through the plane, the tow bar and into the tug. Later you could see where a bolt hit the blacktop, went into the rebar, ran across the ramp about 50 ft and then blew out a chunk about 3 inches wide when it left.
I have been 15 years on this plattform and love educational videos, and this is the best most well laid out video on HOW LIGHTNING WORKS that has ever been published on the net.
Man, hank always finds a way to make me intrested. Ive always wanted to learn a little about tornados and lightning, etc. Thanks for your work and your reserch.
This reminded me of how behind I am on studying lightning - I'm usually so focused on tornadoes. Lightning can be pretty under-appreciated, both in aesthetics, and in the danger they pose.
I know you put a lot of work into these videos, but man I wish there was more to watch. I love your music, your positivity, you kindness to animals and humans alike, and your insanely nuts adventures you share with us people who could never consider storm chasing.
I have been watching your channel since around 2010 and I swear I learn more watching a few of your videos than I do and entire week of school lol! Love the content keep it up man! You are an inspiration to my photography obsession
@Pecos Hank Many thanks to you and your lightning gurus for such a great explanation. I've been in software engineering for 30 years. It saddens me when technical people can't find a way to explain something to people who are not technical, in a way they can understand it. You definitely achieved that goal. Kudos!
Taking a deep dive into your channel is by far the best thing I've done during the quarantine. I forgot about all of the craziness happening and felt like I was there with you on all of the vacations and storm chases you've showed us here. You're work is always incredible, but it's especially meaningful at the present time. Thanks for providing some joy Hank, I'm sure I'm not alone here.
Sooo...... actually probably the happiest person to have Hank here because I absolutely love weather, and he’s taught me a lot and is helping me along the way! I know I’m too young to decide......but I really want to be a meteorologist and this is really cool to see! Thanks so much Hank!
Yay! Hank is here. Thank you for the informative video. Yes, I waited till it was over to comment. “A bolt of the blue” was fascinating! Pos/Neg was super educational. As we head into storm season whilst homeschooling, this is definitely a lesson in Science. Thank you, Hank. Sending love, healthy health and best wishes to you and the Mrs. xoxo
Hank I discovered your channel about a year ago and I am hooked. I've always been excited and curious about thunderstorms and tornadoes, but you present the information in clearly and without over-simplification and missing details. It feels like we in the passenger seat for your adventures and it's a comfortable format. Keep it up and stay healthy.
Fantastic video Hank. I was fascinated by lightning when I was in grad school in meteorology many years ago, and your explanation of it here is spot-on and has so many excellent examples. Really well done.
I was never afraid of thunder and lightning as a kid, I find it beautiful. As an adult, I still feel the same with caution though because, sudden thunderstorms can damage appliances
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this. My sons loved it. The pop quiz part was amazing....my husband and I joined in as well. I was a beautiful family moment learning about something old but very new. Many thanks!
I swear as soon as I saw this notification I started crying, I'm so happy I got the notification for once in my damn life, I also definitely want to know how lightning works
Little Miss Lowlife - 😂 I don't have notifications turned on so it's kinda like the old days when you were expecting a phone call - you'd pick up the receiver really quickly to make sure there was a dial tone ☎️
Great work! This was by far one of the most interesting videos I’ve watched on RU-vid! Definitely going to keep an eye out for various styles of negative/positive CG. Though down here in Perth, Australia, we get about 7 major lightning heavy thunderstorms per year. Fingers crossed!
I just watched this with my friend's kids and when you get to the part where you ask the audience to guess if the lightning is positive or negative we all started yelling out. They got it right every time, and I got it wrong every time while shouting "damn you, Pecos Hank!". Then to add insult to injury you come on and say it's pretty easy to do!
A few summers ago, I was in a motorhome in a middle of a field when a huge electrical strom appeared. I was always told that being in a car was one of the safest places to be during a lightning strom, but I was in a fiberglass bodied motorhome. I thought for sure we were going to get hit by lightning in the middle of that field, but we didn't. It's kinda scary being the tallest thing in a eletrical storm.
Amazing video pal! I wanted to learn basics of lightning for my project. I got the basic idea in first 3mins of your video. Yet couldn't stop knowing more. Amazing!
Hank, there are two wonderful videos I have watched, and shared with others. First one was when the snake drank water out of the cup, it is #1 for me. Second is the lightning video, I have to say you have a great sense of photography as well your editing.
Wow, Hank, you did it again. Thank you. I actually learnt something! I got 7 out of 8 of your Positive or Negative guesses,.. the last one threw me, but hey. :D
Whaaaaaaat? That “bolt from the blue” usually being negatively charged is totally new info for me. I was under the impression they were ALWAYS positive. The ones I’ve experienced have usually had that percussive “crack” normally associated with positive lightning, to boot. Maybe that’s a myth as well?
Man those visuals explaining the movement of lightning was really well done and really helpful! Thanks to you I got every question in the test right Really enjoyed this as always, thank you!!
You've got a real talent for explaining things and telling stories - whether it's making complex phenomena understandable in videos like this, or moving your viewers with tornado chasing stories that are accompanied by your photographic, musical, and poetic magic. One cannot help but admire such depth of soul.
Pecos, you did it again!! you created another amazing video and taught us a lot in the process!!! This is how all storm chaser videos should be!! You get into the thick of it like a good chaser would and you also share and pass on very important knowledge to the folks who are not as familiar with weather! You are a great content creator and I think you need a TV show
