I remember watching him play for us about 3 years ago and I thought he was finished by how badly he played for us. Fair play to him for proving me wrong.
It's the first ligue title for Lille in a decade. Last time was 2011. What a team that was. Hazard, Sow, Gervinho, Cabaye, Debuchy, Obraniak, Landreau...
It was huge not to mention the troubles at Sporting couple of seasons ago. They came back stronger than ever ... and who knows, maybe Ronaldo will join them in the next season or another.
Lille winning Ligue 1 breaking PSG’s dominance Rangers ending Celtic dominance Inter winning Serie A after a long time Sporting winning the title ending their 19 year drought Athletico winning the title Turkish super league having a close competition Brondby winning their first title in 16 years For the the whole world the year was disappointing and sad but for European football it was a WONDERFUL season
Lille didn't lose a single game against PSG, Lyon and Monaco, and beat all 3 teams. They 100% deserve the title, despite Parisians claiming they "threw it away".
Thanks for giving props to Canadian international Jonathan David! He had a great run in Belgium which he slowly transferred to France. Additionally, two Canadians won the Turkish league. It’s great to see more and more Canadians thriving in European elite leagues. 🇨🇦
🇨🇦 Alphonso Davies - Bundesliga champion 🇨🇦 Jonathan David - Ligue 1 champion 🇨🇦Cyle Larin + Atiba Hutchinson - Süper Lig champions 🇨🇦Milan Borjan - Serbian champion 🇨🇦Scott Arfield - Scottish champion
Well those psg rejects have gone and have done wonders for other teams, the reason why psg lost cl finals last year was due to this so called psg reject.
Really appreciating these documentaries! Learning a lot of new things and it's great escapism from the current difficulties of life like restrictions, exams etc (albeit small difficulties in the grand scheme of things). Cheers Alfie!
@@joebisexdon8859 yeah I get a bit sick of the ads too but it also helps us get these videos for nothing while help support someone who clearly does his research into the subject.
@@joebisexdon8859 don’t worry about it pal, we all have our days. Don’t get me wrong the adds p*ss me off too but for people who really milk it when putting in zero effort.
Can we please acknowledge how hilariously typical it is of this channel, to start talking about the second world war in a video about how a football club won and managed an upset in the present. I chuckled to myself on 2:04 cause I wasn't sure if Alfie was being serious or self aware 😂😂😂 I love this channel btw
@@archstanton6102 I agree with you 100%, and its become one of the main staples of this channel to shed light on various football subjects with the proper context. I just found it funny to hear that particular line in isolation.
Maybe he is of the Annales school of history. Braudel’s book on Phillip II gets around to Phillip II 1,000+ pages in.

Burak Yılmaz is an unique striker and he had tremendous seasons at Turkey, he showed his class almost every season he played here. Too bad that he is discovered by Lille at the age of 35 but he demonstrated that he could lead a team to become champions in such a league. Turkish players pretty much written the fate of this season for Lille and I doubt if they can maintain this championship. Well deserved Lille!
I just put a bet on Turkey to win the Euros and Yilmaz to be top scorer at odds of 2000 - 1. Have been watching him at Lille and with Turkeys current form I can't believe the odds were so high, particularly when you factor in that Greece and Denmark have both won this competition
Congrats Lille!! 👍👏👏 Glad to have seen Jonathan David grow over the season and finally ensuring the championship with a goal and a penalty he provoked. 👍👏👏
I wonder which CB pair Fernando Santos will field in the Euros. Ruben Dias has been arguably the best CB in the world this season, José Fonte has been absolutely amazing at Lille & Pepe has been the cornerstone of Portugal's defence for nearly a decade now, he also had a brilliant UCL campaign with Porto. Seems like a pretty sweet dilemma for the coach.
@@fegismcclaren1632 pepe had an AMAZING performance in every game in this euros. our best defender, and even played his part on offence sometimes. our journey is over, but pepe gave his all in this games, and was probably one of the most dedicated players on portugal’s side.
What makes Leicester so amazing is how they have continued to hold form, competing for European spots each year. But the margin for error is so thin for lower budget clubs. A couple of wrong signings, and they tumble back down the standings because it is so difficult to continually find good players for the right price.
Yeah but in 2012 there was still no real powerhouse in Ligue 1, Lyon was struggling financilly as they were building there new stadium and Paris was slowly building up but were nowhere near the team they became in the next couple of years. Montpellier was just the last team of a few very open and crazy years
I agree, I think Montpellier is closer to a fairy tail such as Leicester more than Lille 2011, Lille 2021 and Monaco of 2017. In terms of quality that Montpellier team is weaker than any of those squads. Giroud being the only player who went on to achieve something significant from the 2011 Montpellier. The city of Montpellier has one of the best Rugby teams in Europe, football comes 2nd in Montpellier which made it even more of a shock even for the locals who didn’t believe in the title until late that season.
@@daniel-cc7bn Losign Donnaruma at any fee is a win for the club, considering his salary demands. Mino Raiola and Jorge Mendez are the cancer of football.
This just proves what I always say, people give to much importance to money in football, but the truth is, money doens't win championships or games, everything is possible. Being expensive doens't mean you are better, have 11 expensive stars, doens't mean you have a better team.
This achievement is an outlier. Normal service will resume next season when the rich clubs are done scavenging and ripping the team apart. P$G will again wrap up the league by March. You're living in a fantasy world if you think money isn't the king in football now.
@@animeshkhare1769 yup that's how it is these days PSG will buy out the key players in this team and normal service will resume same with Manchester City when they buy Harry Kane in the summer
Congratulations to Lille for winning the Ligue 1 title! Also, really good video. I really like these longer videos and Lille's title-winning team definitely deserves some major recognition.
Well he's right and wrong. Yeah Losc stadium is in a different town, Villeneuve, D'ascq. But the satellite towns of Lille like Roubaix, Tourcoing, Villeneuve D'ascq etc. are part of "Lille Metropole" and are more like suburbs or neighborhood since the satellite towns are "glued" to Lille, no countryside between the towns. Sort of how Wembley, Tottenham, West Ham etc. are in London
Another thing about Lille is that this win is big for CONCACAF. A young, promising American, a young, promising Canadian and a young, promising Mexican is part of the team. The Mexican however didn't play any games, and isn't eligible for a medal, but it still counts, eh?
Great to see a new team win Ligue 1. However some of the teams PSG have fielded this year have been hilariously poor compared to their champions league-best 11.
The weight of having to pay so much money on forwards salaries is showing. They have some really weak rotation options in midfield and defense (This guy called Baker looked like an amateur against city in the semifinals).
@@ciudadano1995 I saw them play a league game earlier in the season and neymar and mbappe we’re out and genuinely didn’t know half of the PSG players and the ones I did know were poor. They ended up losing to Nantes who were bottom of the league if I remember correctly
@@AdamCanavan12 Sorry, Mbappe played against Nantes when they lost 2-1. Having a team in that game of Mbappe, Di Maria, Draxler, Verratti, Marquinhos, Diallo, Perriera, Navas isnt really a team of nobodies.
Yes this video was long but it wouldn't be HITC Sevens without such historical information in all your videos And your videos are really entertaining and educational so keep making them
Really interesting. Ligue 1 is great league. You should do a video on the rise and fall of Bastia, 1978 UEFA cup finalists, who are now back in the second league having been relegated to the 4th because of financial difficulties. I am hoping to visit next season.
Amazingly well researched stuff again. I love these football documentary types. Still waiting for the top seven British managers abroad following on from your critic of English managers the other week.
Great video! Please do one on Sporting Clube de Portugal winning the league this season too please, we hired a coach that didn't have FIFA lvl 4 coaching and didn't invest nowhere near as much as our rivals (Benfica invested 100M€ and they got no trohpies), we were the underdogs and won the league after 19 years! Also Sporting won the 23rd title, not the 19th.
Always Happy to know an Underdog winning any Championships! Congratulations to Lille f.c. & Thank You So Much to Good Gods & Goddesses , Owners & All Supporters of Lille f.c. 🌷🌿🌎💖🇫🇷
Could you make a video on the Basque country national team which toured Europe, South America, and North America as well coming 2nd the first ever season of Mexican league during the mid to late 1930s. They toured the three separate continents whilst escaping the Spanish Civil War and were raising money for the Basque country.
This team was reformed and exists today with guys who are from that area, but not able to make the Spanish or French teams. The team's ELO puts them from exhibitions between Colombia and Switzerland or a lower end top 16 team.
congrats Lille for winning the title. It was an amazing run. As a Mexican fan following Mexican players abroad. Eugenio Pizzuto was signed this season. (I also see him in the championship photos in this video lol) While we hoped that he could debut during this season I definitely understand why he didnt. Couldnt afford to drop any points just to test out a young player like pizzuto. My questions to Lille fans is: Have you heard of Pizzuto before? How do you think he will fit in the team or think he will debut next season?
Day (I can't even remember anymore): Do a video on the Seven best footballers who made their senior international debuts prior to their first team club debuts. Like so King Alfie can see 😉
Tim Weah's father in addition to obviously being an African Football Legend is also currently the president of a country, Liberia, but he represents the US instead of Liberia. He is young so I think his father was still the president when he was deciding. That is crazy
Lille really made a stride to break psg's dominance. Well done👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏.As a man utd fan, I want man utd to sign sven botman,He can partner maguire and provide an upgrade to this current man utd defense.
Great video! I was hoping you would do this. I think a how Sporting Lisbon won the Primeira Liga for the first time in 2 decades would be an interesting video as well.
@of_waffles The Monaco thing was bad luck, as the owner loose half his fortune on a divorce. In Lille's case, they never sorted out their financial problems.
First of all. The thumbnail does not do justice. Lille is one of the big club in France unlike Leicester. They are on par with Lyon, Marseille, Rennes, PSG (before Qatari tycoon takeover) and Monaco. They are quite rich in history and already won the league 4 times including this year (5 if you include the inaugural version of Ligue 1 where one of the predecessor club won it). They are always at least a top-half side (that season where they almost relegated is an anomaly) and normally finish in top 5 even. The 2011 squad is on contention for dynasty if they just more consistent in the battle with Marseille and Lyon after the latter dynasty crumbled. Yes, PSG takeover brings them to whole new level but doesn't mean they are really far away from others like Lyon, Lille and Monaco considering 3 teams managed to win the league in the reign of the Qatari owners (Montpellier in 2012, Monaco in 2017 and Lille in 2021). Lille is one of the touted clubs that can win the Ligue 1 just like Lyon, Monaco or Marseille. It is far away from Leicester magical run. In fact, this squad is not even the best Lille title winning squad. That double-trophy Lille in 2011 has a really bonkers squad. They got Landreau (one of the best backup French keeper and also both Lille AND PSG legend), Debuchy, Rami, Chedjou, Beria in defense, the best all-french combo midfield during 2009-2013 (Cabaye, Mavuba and Balmont) and the most vicious front three we ever see in Ligue 1 (Hazard, Gervinho and Sow). This comment is not demeaning Lille's accomplishment. But they are far away from almost unthinkable 5000-1 Leicester. Not on the same degree (if you look for that kind of achievement, look at Montpellier 2012. That was more comparable).
I think Bordeaux, Nantes and St. Etienne deserve to be in that list of "biggest clubs". They each have between six and ten professional-era titles, while Rennes have none (I don't think Rennes has even been Runners-Up). Granted, Rennes are a well-supported regional club with France's best academy, but I'd put them more on par with the likes of Lens, Nice, Strasbourg, Toulouse, (etc.) I'd go: S-Tier: PSG (post-takeover) A-Tier: Marseille, Lyon, St. Etienne, PSG (pre-takeover), Bordeaux, Nantes, Lille, Monaco B-Tier: Lens, Strasbourg, Rennes, Nice, Toulouse (etc.)
William George Berry (18 August 1904 - 15 September 1972) was known as Bill in England and George while managing clubs in French speaking countries. There’s a photo and bio on Wikipedia. Great video though Alfie. Thank you
Fun trivia fact - did you know that Gérard Lopez also for a while owned a Formula One team? In 2009 Genii Capital (a financial consulting company founded by Lopez and Eric Lux) acquired a majority stake in the Renault Formula One Team and owned the team outright until the end of 2015 when it was sold back to Renault, which currently operates it under the Alpine brand
Burak Yilmaz hasn't been credited enough in this video. He's pretty much carried Lille to the title with all the goals and assists, most notably, vs Lyon where he scored 2 goals and assisted 1 in a 3-2 comeback. Hes easily been their best player this season.
I think the fact that he was insane at the end of the season is shadowing the rest of it. Don't get me wrong he was amazing for the whole season but we had a period where Bamba was phenomenal, another one where Yazici and Sanches were producing masterclass after masterclass, Botman was a literal wall, David finally woke up at the right time (when Yilmaz was injured), and let's not forget the work and leadership of Benjamin André and José Fonte without whom the system would fall appart, as well as the importance of Maignan in our defensive record. I am completely unable to point out who is the man of the season (besides Galtier), can't decide between Maignan, Fonte and André
Champions in 2011, Runners-up in 2005 & 2019, Coupe de France winners in 2011, Coupe de la Ligue runners-up in 2016 and Trophée des Champions winner 2011 ..oh an UEFA Intertoto Cuo winenr in 2004. Hardly comparable to Leceister winning the EPL. Likle has been of of France's top 4 teams for the past 20 years.
Yes, but PSG is far far above Lille. Its the gap between Manchestee United's wages and Sheffield United's. It's made really incredible the same as Leicester because of the incredible digference between PSG and the rest of the teams.
This should be a real treat! Oh and I know I have been on hiatus, but you best believe I am keeping track; documentary on Monarcas Morelia Day 9, please!
