Literary Agents Jessica and James are answering a viewers questions about all the terms she found in deal announcements online. Auctions, Pre-Empts, Exclusives... we define them and explain their purpose. (And why you should have a healthy relationship with them)
****
Jessica Faust’s love for books is what first brought her to open BookEnds Literary Agency. It is her desire to be an advocate for all authors that pushed her to create her blog, the BookEnds RU-vid channel and to maintain a vibrant presence on Twitter.
Jessica is proud to have grown BookEnds to an agency that represents authors of all genres for children and adults, allowing her to reach more readers and help more authors and illustrators achieve their dreams.

Since interning at BookEnds as an undergrad in the summer of 2015, James has (basically) never left. He's just continuously level-up-ed inside of BookEnds. Now he is the Literary Assistant and Social Media Manager for the team. He’s been a reader since his mom gave him the first A Series of Unfortunate Events book and ordered the sequels regularly through Scholastic book orders.
James is currently growing his own list and is actively seeking submissions in adult literary and upmarket fiction, mystery, thrillers, and suspense. He is also accepting submissions in all sub-genres of Young Adult fiction, and is actively looking for Picture Books that make him laugh.

I'd love to hear about the main publishers and character traits of the different houses. They can't all be the same or work the same. Thanks.

I've heard elsewhere that if you get a huge deal and the book fails to sell brilliantly, that can be the death knell for your next book. Is that so in your experience? Would it be safer to accept a modest deal and hope for amazing sales? [I seem to live in the 'under-promise and over-deliver' camp...]

Hi guys! I love, love, love all I've learned from you since I found your channel! I have a question about something irrelevant to this video, but since this is your most recent one, maybe this is the place to post it...? Here it is: I'm worried about pacing with my book. Most of it is a flashback, so I have a half page in the beginning before the flashback begins. That's the time period we go back to at the end for the last chapter. But during the flashback itself (bulk of the novel), the pacing is kind of wonky. I have the first half organized in chapters and over a few weeks' time, but the next half is by years-- the pace speeds up. The first half is when IT happens (big conflict) and its immediate repercussions, then the next is the following years. Do you think I should consider changing it somehow, and if so how? I don't want to turn of or confuse readers or possible agents with a kind of inconsistent pace. Do you have any advice? Thank you! Happy new year!

I thought of another great question other writers might like to know about: you have claimed that you do a little background check of any writer who you might be thinking about offering representation. (Because the book is good, right?) What if you found out that they have put out one or more unsuccessful self-published books? Do you automatically cross them off at that point, believing their name is already tarnished in the "publishing" world??

@@NR-rv8rz Yeah, and I'm the last one to comment on this video. I think they don't WANT to answer honestly b/c I am right. They claim they want horror, but I think it's a horror that is so watered down it could be considered YA horror. And who wants to read that shit?

How does an agent deal the writers like Thomas Harris and Cormac McCarthy? I know there are deadlines in publishing but are some writers excluded when it comes to them?

Question: Do you have an idea of which of your books are likely to end up in an auction? Do you ever try to engineer an auction?

If a publishing company pre empts your book, 9 times of ten it will come with a full marketing pre order package. Thus a pre empt almost gaurentees a best-selling book.

Hm..."A publishing auction?" I thought publishers didn't like it when authors query several publishers at a time?
@stevenlloyd39

Most publishers allow you to submit to other publishers. I won't submit my work to them unless I can do so.
@BookEndsLiterary

It's standard practice for agents to submit to multiple publishers simultaneously. And for authors to submit to multiple agents (and publishers) simultaneously.
