Interesting info! As someone who's taken several statistics at the PhD level, I like how you guys actually plan out the experiments in a logical manner with CLEAR and SIMPLE questions that are TESTABLE (even statistically testable, if you wanted to), and are careful about not making inferences about the results outside of the context of the experiment (thought the time points should be represented as equally spaced). Obviously would be great to have tried different lots of each brand but that's expensive and uses a lot of materials.

Thx for all of your videos( I think)!? Ever since I started watching, my life has changed. You can’t see the bottom of my pool because of the great algae growth in it. I have not mowed my lawn and have pile of letters from the HOA. My wife doesn’t even bother me to fix anything on the house any more, as a matter of fact, I haven’t seen her in nearly 2 weeks. I don’t know if that is because I stare in to my aquarium for hours on end, or she has moved out. I guess since I don’t have any money to go to dinner and a movie now or even want to. Yep I just looked, her closet is empty. The time I save now not having to wash her car, I can now spend making water changes. I am certain I will get fired if I leave early one more time from work because I have to see the new shipment of corals before anyone else can see them fresh out of the box. But, I have that covered, I already gave them my application to work there. Of course I will have to downsize my house and truck but get a bigger aquarium. I am hooked Thanks again. Lol P.S. if anyone has pictures of my wife please send to me, the corals I know have erased my memory. And baby if you happen to read this. I am just joking, I am not downsizing my truck

Since most reefers Dose Calc and Alk it would be interesting to see how the magnesium levels hold as that would be beneficial in keeping elevated levels of Calc and Alk. Wow, I realize i have been possibly doing alot of things wrong. I have only stoped heating the ro water since summer since I live in florida but I just pour it straight in without testing the temp and red sea says mix at 65 degress which sounds insane to me! But does make me wonder if the water is much cooler than I though but doubtful since it is stored in a hot garage. Some of it is premixed or I have one ro container I leave in house so since I keep indoor temp about 78 it should be good. By the touch it feels good and occasionally I have checked the thermometer in tank. I use reef crystals by IO since its by far the cheapest but had no idea its so elevated. I knew it said elevated but I thought that was that the other mix was maybe fish only but 500 is pretty high. Could this be dangerous for my tank and corals? Wondering if I should switch. I dont dose and change water weeky and dont check calcium that often(but will now) seems its usually 440 or something and dkh is usually 9 .3 or 4. Should I keep the alk at exactly the same level, is it okay to vary a few points as long as its in the 9"s? Kind of new at this game!

Am I understanding this correctly, to do an auto water change unit, with a months worth of water, and daily water changes, I don’t have to heat it (I already believe this to be true, but I don’t have to keep mixing it beyond the first few hours? So initially mix it and let it sit stagnate while being used or do I keep mixing it all month? It sounds like mix and let sit?

I have been using HW Marinemix for 4 month now since the new system received water. I tested alk, Cal and mag for the first time last week as I'm planning on trying some test corals soon. I was shocked to see alk was at 6dkh when my target was 9. I tested my saltwater mixing container and it tested at 6dkh. I dumped the water and started a new batch. It was spot on at 9dkh. I'm going to test every other day to find the drop off point. However I do believe HW Marinemix is dropping at some point. I have also found other threads confirming the same. I do use a strong power head and heater. Question if I had 10 gallons left of sw and added 30 gal of fresh water to the 10, then added salt could this be affecting the dkh and Cal? Cal was also low by 50ppm. 450 is what I should be getting but redsea found it at 400.

We haven't done any testing in temps quite that cool, but we have no issues storing TM Pro Reef water at room temp (about 70 degrees). I doubt you'll see much, if any, precipitation at slightly lower temps though. Of course, if you wanted to know for sure, I would test alkalinity after it's fully mixed, then again after the saltwater is allowed to hit the 50's and 60's. If you get a drop, it's pretty safe to assume that there is some calcium/alkalinity precipitation going on.

Once Coral Pro is added to a tank with high water movement and at 78 degrees F, will it start to precipitate in the tank just as it would in a storage container with a powerhead and heater? It seems like it would since the two factors which seem to cause precipitation, water movement and heat, exist in the display tank.

We found the most stable storage from salts like Tropic Marin Pro and ESV B-Ionic salts, with little to know "crud" in the tank. Always heard to keep a wavemaker in the water if its mixed and I know that uncirulated saltwater gets slimy or at least the wavemaker and cords and the sides of the storage bin got slimy when my wavemaker came unplugged for a few days and had to throw it out, defietly afraid to use it if everything it touched was slimy! Are you saying we are not supposed to keep a wavemaker or sometype of circulation like pump or something in there?

This is just one video in a larger salt test. If you watch further into this playlist, you'll see that using circulation to store saltwater is actually a better plan :)

@@BRStv Did you do a longer test - like weeks/months? I think you might be analyzing your data a bit incorrectly. Its true that for example the alkalinity is +- 0.5 DKH - but if this was truly 'random' variation due to testing - you would see a bumpy graph consistently ( like you do in some brands), as compared to some of the salts that have a constant rise or drop on the parameters. Likewise, there should be no salts that are 'flat'. One other thing - is that the way you change units on the graph (going from minutes - hours - weeks) without spreading out the time in the right proportion - it makes the graph potentially suggest something thats not 'real'. Thanks for the video btw - In general it does suggest there is little difference over time. If might also be interesting to know whether salt in a large tank (like 60 gallons) - is different than a smaller tank.

Why does red sea say to mix for 4 hours max if you proved it takes 23 hours to completely mix?

Generally when I store my water I have a heater to keep the saltwater at the same temperature as my tanks. Do you guys always keep your mixed saltwater at room temperature or is it alright to keep it at 78 degrees after mixing?

Never mind I got to the end and saw you plan on looking at that further. Thanks guys!

What if you keep it circulating and heated
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 года назад
We found that if you keep your salt heated and circulated, there is no drop in calcium or alkalinity levels (within the margin of error on our test kits)

Another variable in the equation is concentration of CO2 in the air and the gas exchange between air and water. I have experienced more extreme alkalinity reduction over time using both red sea coral pro and red sea blue bucket when stored at warmer temperatures without constant mixing.

Anyone else notice the line was on 1.027 specific gravity

Hmmmm. Well I’m pretty sure I just caught a supraliminal message. If every reefer is doing monthly water changes at .001 SG more than usual, BRS could stand to make a killing!! I’m talking dozens of dollars a month!:)

Has anybody done this on AQUA FOREST SALT?

I mix my salt for 20 minutes then chuck it straight in as it can lose certain minerals if left in storage to long

Sounds like you have a lot of coral consumption going on in your tank!

Bulk Reef Supply crazy thing is I only have two frags a pulsing Xenia and a hammer. I jus made the 200 mile round trip to the “closest” lfs yesterday picked up a refractometer to replace my two hydrometers and looks like I was running at 1.030sg on top of it all! I’m jus getting used to dosing and using my Hanna checkers to figure it all out. I think I probably jus precipitated all that alkalinity into the sandbed I noticed on the last W.C. The top layer was crusting over.

If RSCP loses Ca levels because of precipitation after 4hrs, why doesn’t this also show up in the Alkalinity (at 4hrs)? Or is it not calcium carbonate?
@ryanbatcheller394
@ryanbatcheller394 5 лет назад
You would expect to see that for sure if it was calcium carbonate.

Ryan Batcheller I wonder where the calcium goes (precipitates) if it’s not calcium carbonate.

one of the tests kits may dissolve suspended percipatate.
