In this video I meet up with Deputy Williams and his search and rescue dog, Baxter the Bloodhound. Deputy Williams shares a great amount of information that will help people who run the risk of having a loved one go missing, such as those with dementia, Alzheimer's, autism, and similar situations. Deputy Williams has Baxter track and locate our volunteer "missing" teen, Tyrone, in the fast-paced tracking scene.

I live off grid and was a little lost one night when it was a pitch black night and couldn't find our tracks back home. My bloodhound Cooper picked up our tracks and took us back home. I have two bloodhounds and love this breed.

I have 2 Rottweilers (my catch dogs/watch dogs), 4 coonhounds (my treeing dogs), and 3 bloodhounds. Bloodhounds by far are second to none as far as tracking goes. When my boys were younger they use to go hide all over my 15 acre lot, and my oldest bloodhound Duke would find them within minutes. Great dogs!

I also get a lot of crap for my bloodhounds dragging me on a walk. The "looks like the dog is taking you for a walk". I tell them, this is why a bloodhound is a bloodhound!

That's exactly what Deputy Williams responded to me...can't have these dogs trained like an obedience dog because they have to function in a very natural dog-like way, not to our standards.

My bloodhound Roxy has pulled my shoulder out of socket before just taking her on a walk so they do more then just walk you they drag you look wouldn't have it any other way though.

Me and my bloodhound roxy along with the rest of the dog team I am on Hunter Hounds Search and Recovery just found a little girl that had been missing for 13 days we got the call on day 12. Some of are dogs have tracked a 6 month old trail in training only. I recommend to use them on any call no matter how old the trail is. Baxter is a beautiful bloodhound sir keep up the good work and thank you for you service.

This breed goes all the way back to 600 AD. Absolutely amazing design and evolution. The scent ability of a grizzly bear in a 100 lb package.

Bears actually have a greater sense of smell than bloodhounds, for black bears it’s actually 7x greater.

When we trained Bloodhounds with the FBI they told us some fun facts, after we had the First SAR Validated Bloodhound in British Columbia Canada that was poisoned right in our backyard Victoria BC 20 years ago. The FBI studied the Bloodhound for 8 years back in the 1980's. The FBI proved ( 40 years ago) that Bloodhounds have the ability to be able to scent discriminate 1 particle out of a trillion.

I know it's kind of a weird, but, growing up with hounds, it's one of my dreams to own a bloodhound and train it for search and rescue. Specifically, I want to help find missing children. Dead or alive, I want to provide closure for the families.

i once tested my bloodhounds on a scent trail i made out in my horse pasture that was about 10 days old and they both caught right on the trail and surprisingly they stuck to the trail and avoided stopping at the horse dropping snacks like they usually would do when not on a trail.

I trained my bloodhound to be obedient. He is also a house dog. Does not live outside but spends a lot of time outside. I don't use a leash on him when he's tracking. I put a GPS tracking collar on him. He will also hunt racoons with my coonhounds

I feel like I would want one to take on a treasure hunt. Rub a scent on something and walk around and stash it. Then make him look for it.

This video just came up so I'm a little late. Short story. Had my two dogs on a walk in the snow and was a quarter mile from home. Deuce, a chow and lab mix went under a burned out trailer to search for game. Gunny, pictured here thought Deuce was in trouble and disappeared without my knowledge. Deuce comes out and we can't find Gunny. We start home to get my wife when all of a sudden, she and Gunny come on to the road from our property. She said that Gunny came and got her attention and the way he was acting, she knew something was up. He then led her back the way he had come from towards Deuce and myself. Smartest dog and most smart alec dog I've ever had!

The handler guided the dog the entire track, he would hold the dog back when the dog was off the track and then move forward when the dog was going the correct direction,

I screamed at my tv for the 19 hours those boston cops searched for that boston marathon bomber !! He was bleeding and found 1/2 mile away , BY A CITIZEN, passed out in his boat !! It would have taken a trained hound 6 minutes to track him. I had a basset hound who'd scare up every rabbit on the property before he'd take a leak.

In Virginia a bloodhound is the only dog whose testimony is accepted in court. I have one who is 9 1/2 years old, she has her own bedroom, and her own queen size bed. One might say she is spoiled. I dread the day the leaves us.

Wow so amazing! Im wondering how does he know which scent to follow. I mean I always thought he would need to have a sample to follow, but it seems he just follows the right track out of the blue.

That was a big part of what I hadn't understood about tracking...he explained that the dogs don't follow so much a scent on the ground necessarily (like footprints), but more the scent distributed through the air itself. At least, that is how I understood his explanation. Pretty fascinating!

Typically the dog is given a scent item that the missing person was wearing, if you are lucky enough to have it, or it might sniff around the inside of a car the person was driving or an item they dropped. It looked like in the video that maybe an article of black clothing was left in the grass near the car, as it looked like once the dog hit that piece of cloth and had a sent, it really went nose down and started casting for scent. It's part of the training regimen for a tracking dog that they have a process they use catch that first scent of their quarry.

We have a Rottweiler and a bloodhound. My Rottweiler is well behaved and my bloodhound is a menace haha. We train him to search also and he has even found my kids 😂. They weren’t lost just hiding haha

Lately cops search highways for bullet casings when there's a shooting on the road. We've all seen that line of 6 cops with flashlights searching, holding up traffic for miles. One gunpowder trained beagle would sniff every bullet fired since the civil war in minutes.

I actually trained my old bloodhound to mantrail but you really don’t train them you just encourage them to do what they do naturally.

I have a question hopefully someone can answer...How does he know which scent to pick up? Like let's say there are four people in the car, but only one is missing. What stops him from just going to a guy's house that isn't the missing person? Or in the case of criminals, one is in custody, the other is on the run. How does he know which scent is which? Very cool video, though. Very informative.

I’ve trained with law enforcement bloodhounds and ideally you want an article of clothing from the missing person and a spot they were last located. If a person went missing from their house, this is more difficult as the house/yard is a cloud of their scent and so you would try to pick the scent trail up a block away.

Beautiful dog and great video thanks a lot...I read that crossing rivers, sticking to roads or hard surfaces and lacing one's traces with the defecations of a large predator can maximize one's chances of eluding a dog...I don't know if these things are true. I love dogs...thanks for your good work...I am sure that you have saved lives.

It was an interesting video and interview., and it was fun to watch. You look like you don't trust your dog. He is pulling on a taut line - especially in the first tracking segment. I wonder if he would track better if you kept better pace with him, i.e. kept more slack in the line? Sometimes it looks like you don't trust the direction that he is working. like you are pulling against him. I guess since you are the police, you have to keep the line on him. He might track better though if you didn't.

Deputy Williams and I talked a long time about that because I wondered the very same thing. Apparently, these dogs need to be as "doggish" and natural as possible and not all obedience-trained, or they can't function as well as tracking dogs. They need to be maintained less like a house pet and more like a natural, wild dog to maintain those senses.

I’d say tracking a person with a diabetic issue wouldn’t be a problem taking him off the lead but a criminal would kill the dog if the handler wasn’t there. A human can in no way keep up with a tracking dog that was off the leaf.

Buddy had a blood hound that dog if it caught a sent was off leash he be gone. He would find a racoon sent follow that thing only way know where he went off too when he treed that racoon he start barking. If you have one in the city have really beef up your fencing they have big nails can dig under fences not much of a jumper so a block wall is best that way no way to go under. Not like a husky can easily clear 6 foot wall.

things and situations can get out of control and you might be confused on what to do as regard missing persons or pets because sometimes we blame ourselves for the incidents that occurred but you don't have to beat yourself so hard when you can simply send hazadhackha_ a message on instagram and watch the situation get handled and though it might not take away the panics and trauma caused but at least the person or pet would be found, guaranteed .
