Terrific discussion. I have the ultimate respect for those that put on a tool belt and can actually do what they discuss. I have been a woodworker, furniture maker and DIY trim carpenter for 50 years. I am currently helping my son remodel his 100-year old historic home. I’ve learned so much from Brent to add to my skill set in this remodel. Can’t thank him enough. There is nothing like putting on a tool belt and testing your knowledge and skills.

Hopefully those historic books get digitized so they don't get lost. Great video.

Most of the builders I know and see building in my neck of the woods have never or not in a very long time lifted a hammer, as you said they are business men.

"Am I really a master? Uh, I don't think so..." This is a statement indicative of a master. If you don't know an answer to something I'm sure you know where to look to find it, and more importantly, you know the edge of your own knowledge which is something non-masters usually don't know.

Writing as a retired quantity surveyor from London I find your video's most interesting, especially as we have so many historic buildings here...

I'm losing money on almost all of my jobs, I guess I'm on my way to becoming a master.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing your journey. Your comment, "building houses for 30 years doesn't make you a master builder" reminds me of something I heard a while back, about the

If this were the 18th century, I’d see if my 12-year-old son could apprentice under you. 🙂

This topic reminds me of some reading in my misspent youth. Aristotle said " For the experienced know the fact, but not the wherefore; but the artists know the wherefore and the cause. For the same reason we consider that the master craftsmen in every profession are more estimable and know more and are wiser than the artisans."

Hey Brent! Great video! You should also do one of what would you do if you were starting your business today in 2023 with all the knowledge you have with 30 years in the trade!

This video was so encouraging to me. I agree with and can identify with so much of what you said. Like putting the craft before business. There's many jobs I end up not making as much simply because I wanted it done right. I've been doing this for 35 years and though I know I have learned a lot and developed skills that some don't have, I still have difficulty seeing myself as a master builder, MAYBE a master finish carpenter but that's it. There just is so much I don't know and would love to learn. Thank you!
