Hey there, fellow gardeners and worm farming enthusiasts! Have you ever wondered how to speed up the composting process in your worm farm? In this informative video, I'll be sharing some fantastic insights on how to get that precious gardener's gold, also known as worm castings, even faster for your houseplants, garden containers, and overall garden.
Throughout the video, I'll dive into the factors that influence composting time, such as the type of worms, worm bin size, waste materials, and environmental conditions like temperature and moisture. Red Wigglers, the common composting worms, play a significant role in transforming organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost. The process typically takes around 2 to 3 months in a well-balanced environment.
But why wait? I'll provide you with expert tips to accelerate the composting process and get your gardeners gold in no time. From proper food preparation, chopping or shredding compost material, to freezing food beforehand for quicker consumption by our worm friends - you'll discover various strategies to supercharge your worm farm's productivity.
Maintaining an optimal environment for the worms is crucial, so I'll guide you on creating the perfect balance of greens (fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds) and browns (dried leaves, straw, paper) in your worm bin. We'll talk about the ideal temperature and moisture levels that will keep your worms happy and productive, leading to faster composting.
As you watch the video, keep in mind that worm composting is a dynamic process, and each worm bin is unique. So, it's essential to observe your worm farm's health and adjust as needed for the best results. I'll also address common questions, like whether earthworms can speed up composting compared to Red Wigglers.
Are you ready to unlock the full potential of your worm farm and create a thriving ecosystem that rewards you with rich, nutrient-packed compost? Then hit that subscribe button and share this video with your fellow worm farmers. Let's all embark on a journey of happy worm farming together!
Thanks for watching, and until next time, keep those gardens flourishing with the power of worm composting. Happy worm farming! 🌱🪱

Thank you for the info. How do you separate eggs from the casting?
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer Месяц назад
Hi Thank you for watch the channel. I just pick them out when I harvest the worm castings. However commercial worm farmers will use a large screen to screen out the worms and the cocoons. (eggs) This is much faster, however I only have a bunch of hobby bins so I just do it by hand.

Is it normal to have roots in the worm castings? It looks like its eaten up coconut coir. Its been about a month since I added any coir.

Are you a caper ? Or from eastern Canada ? If so where do you get worms ?
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer Месяц назад
Hi Thanks for watching. I am in eastern Canada, I got my worms years ago from a lady on Kijjii that was selling them out of New Brunswick, she shipped them to me on the bus. I have been growing them for about 4 and half years now and have many bins from them. Not sure if she still sells them or not, but you could check Kijjii.

Does cardboard or paper need to be wet before adding to the bin?
@phubbard467

Yes

I use cardboard, paper (or dried leaves) to dry out an excessively wet bin.
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer Год назад
Yes, it is a good idea to wet cardboard or newspapers before adding them to the worm bin. The only time I would not recommend this is if you are trying to dry out a worm bin that is too wet. Just add them in dry to soak up the extra moisture in the worm bin.

We've got lots of small snails (bit bigger than a grain of rice) and fruit flies in the bin. Should we take the snails out and do something about the flies?
@eleanoraddy4683
@eleanoraddy4683 Год назад
Is your bin outside? I would probably remove the snails if you want to use the castings on house plants but the fruit flies just get everywhere don't they😅 try a vinegar trap and some sticky traps for the flies and if you're in the US get some mosquito bits. But if your bin is outside you probably just have to live with the little visitors, sorry! My attempt at an outdoor bin has been given over to nature.
@Norbingel
@Norbingel Год назад
@@eleanoraddy4683 yes, it's outside. I actually had no issues with snails before then a friend gave me a few more worms. They came with the soil she had and I think that's where the whole snail issue came from. I'm hoping they break down the food faster and the worms can eat what they poop out or something. Then I wouldn't mind. But if they competed with the worms, I'm thinking of harvesting them for the chickens :D The fruit flies though, I see no way around them!
@eleanoraddy4683
@eleanoraddy4683 Год назад
@@Norbingel I can't see them directly competing with the worms as they feed differently but maybe a bit extra leafy stuff on top for the snails would put you more at ease? Also birds love to eat snails so you might get some birds visiting
@Norbingel
@Norbingel Год назад
@@eleanoraddy4683 the bin's covered well enough to protect against birds so I'm not really worried. But our chickens could use the treats :D
@eleanoraddy4683
@eleanoraddy4683 Год назад
@@Norbingel oh well if you have chickens to feed then I would definitely add a bit of extra snail salad to your bin and cultivate yourself a population of delicious chick treats! The shells are good for their egg shells and you know they love to eat them!

@eleanoraddy4683
@eleanoraddy4683 Год назад
Yes but probably avoid colour printing
@TheWormWhisperer
@TheWormWhisperer Год назад
Any colour printing now a days on fliers uses food grade ink. Meaning that it is made with soya and is not in away harmful to your worm population. Just stay away from waxy type flyers as they have a thin wax layer over to so the worms have a hard time getting to it.
