Came into this wondering how someone would take almost 20 minutes to divide 2 numbers and came out very satisfied.

While I don't agree with your critiques on HS act 6 I like the points you make in this video! I always appreciate basically any analysis of homestuck that isn't just "wasn't the fandom so craaaazy"

extremely minor thing: the "global term" for the closest point in an object's orbit to its parent body is "periapsis". "perihelion" specifically refers to things orbiting the sun

Pedantic correction: you CAN have fractional days in a year, people just try to avoid them in CALENDAR years for people’s convenience. Leap years and other intercalenation systems specifically exist to correct a calendar year which can only have a whole number of days so it lines up as close as possible to the *actual* physical year it is trying to capture-which for most modern calendars on Earth is the Mean Tropical Year, the average time between 2 of the same equinox or solstice, which is currently about 365.2422 days

oh yeah, good point. i think a point i totally didn't elaborate on enough (/ considered enough in the process) was the distinction between what's a unit people make up for themselves, societally, a la Seasons and Calendar Years too, as opposed to scientific units. i only bring this up briefly and it would've probably helped to elaborate on this since it's pretty interesting

..... You can't really go into criticizing Matt Pat for a dropping stuff because it doesn't jive with his theories, and then let's ignore all of the stuff we had *from Dave's introduction* about his brother is weird and was a horrible guardian and he was in denial, just it was played more as a joke then. I think I'm here for some of your ideas, but the execution in this video just feels really weird because of how much you don't actually go into your points enough for the watcher to get them. We'll agree to disagree on later acts of Homestuck, and I do have some criticisms myself, but stuff like objecting to the time clone stuff when that timeloop is set up early and fully in the story just has me... Confused, I guess. Especially since one of the things I would hard disagree with you apparently is about the story continues to be comedic throughout even as it grows more of a plot and that comedy becomes more and more part of the plot, which at least for me works with the absurdist nature of a lot of that comedy.

Uh... so, do I understand correctly that you didn’t really answer the question? Like, besides the clear “1 sweep is 13/6 years”, plus “and if you assume the days are the same length, you get this many days”..? I don’t get the point here. Like, is your point to, complain about people taking things literally or? (I admit I kind of glossed over the part about media analysis because, that’s not why I clicked the video, among other reasons.) It almost seemed like it was a criticism of “the type of people who would want to see a weighing of the evidence of what we can and cannot confidently conclude about the Alternian calendar based on the text + author statements”, but like, why would one write a video just to criticize the people who would watch a video with that title? And then there was the other stuff criticizing (?) the writing direction near the end of the comic which I don’t really disagree with, but seems even further from the original topic? Tl;dr: huh???
@BoogsNStuff
@BoogsNStuff 3 года назад
yeah, the video went very offtopic from the original point on purpose. my videos are just like, a way for me to talk about a bunch of things on my mind. and yup, it did not answer the titular question. for a long time, i wanted to talk about the (really weird and flawed) state of modern media analysis, especially in games, and figured that this fun experiment i did on my own time was a fun thing to also segue into that topic. i hope the result wasnt a cruel feeling of "i tricked people who like theories into a video about why theories are BAD! ha!", since i moreso tried to touch on how "theories are fun, here's an example of how not to treat these fun little theories that matter much less than deeper analysis"
@driveasandwich6734
@driveasandwich6734 3 года назад
@@BoogsNStuff That is an interesting point, but I think it is severely undermined by how you don't *really* say what's wrong with the way you treated the theory. The only problem you pointed out was your literary dismissal of Hiveswap and troubling evidence, which really only parallels some of the theories from The [Media] Theorists, and not any problem inherent to the format. You don't really tackle the core of the theory's literalism: the obsession on cold data. You never actually say why it's bad that the viewer wanted to watch an interpretation on how long a Homestuck year is, why we should not try to find out how that 29-day month callendar could fit, how tall Mario is, the state Springfield is in, Sonic's exact age. This type of questions is actually at the core of hyperliteralism. Yet this video treats MatPat ignoring things that goes against his theories and Homestuck adhering to dumb jokes as literal events as if they were the same thing. The whole reason MatPat gets backlash when he ignores a cutscene, or the fact Papyrus is Sans' brother, or whole seasons of The Simpsons is that it's antithetical to this hyperliteralism. So using his channels' dishonesty to criticize modern fan-theorizing in general is senseless, as it's eliminated by engaging in it harder. The theory is interchangeable in its relation to the rest of the video, only being particularly relevant because of your assertion that Homestuck was hurt by literalism. Which makes the lack of an answer even less justified. All in all, this makes for a great video, and I am excited to see where this channel will go next! Imma subscribe.
@BoogsNStuff
@BoogsNStuff 3 года назад
@@driveasandwich6734 You make a really good point, but I do want to clarify: I don't have an inherent issue with the topic of the video or the kind of video it is. It's fun to play with numbers like this. Extracting too many numbers from a text and toying with an idea is fun. Problems arise when these fun thought experiments are presented as "cracking the mystery" and "secret Lore intended by the devs" and not the fun simple things they are, and in that discouraging making actual narrative readings of texts with a focus on metaphor as opposed to literalism and lore. It's not bad that the viewer wanted to watch a video about the length of an alternian year, I'm not spec-ops-the-lining you here ;P

Cool video, but I don't think the FNaF videos are exactly a good example of your point because a good chunk of the mysteries _were_ intended and _were_ solvable, just not all of the ones that people thought they saw. FNaF gained its popularity _from_ that dig for clues and secrets, and actively engages with the fandom through it, so I feel like your highlighting it as people digging too deep and missing the author's point comes as a sort of bad-faith argument. Tangentially, I don't think The [Media] Theorists switching to lore theories was necessarily malicious or disingenuous, it was just a result of the sheer numbers their early lore videos like FNaF did, so they were chasing the success that came with that. RU-vid has been their job now for the better part of a decade, so they have to follow what brings in an audience if they want to sustain that livelihood. I have some other issues with how you handled certain topics, like you yourself glossing over critical things in the same way Game Theory does or some math wonkiness, but I think other commenters put it into words better than I ever could. I see the intent with the whole diatribe about media analysis and you make a lot of good points, but some of the ways you did it were a bit hypocritical or self-contradictory. FUCK cinemasins, I can't believe I ever watched their shit.

basically... matpat passes his videos off as *how things are*, not like... the fun little theorycrafting romps they actually are. He pretends to be intellectually rigorous, like he has all the facts, but most of what he does is just fun tangents guessing at things. He's multiplying and dividing the same two numbers together so it all comes up Golden Freddy. He pretends to be figuring out solutions and truths when really he's just kinda making things up from mostly nothing a lot of the time, and that's bad because it makes his audience feel smart while not really thinking.

Actually does "global" count as "everywhere"? From what i guess the word comes from "globe", as in planet, so globally would be "on earth" so it wouldnt be excly right for this kinda discussion. Not actually contributing anything to the math stuff and all, just a thought.
@syweb2
@syweb2 12 дней назад
In logic and computer systems, "global" is shorthand for "everywhere" because for most of our history, and even for practical reasons today, everywhere we can go or have been has been on the same planet.
