Dr. King gave the How Long? Not Long! speech on the steps of the state capitol of Alabama after the Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965. These marches were non-violent demonstrations to bring attention to racial injustice in the area of voting. When these African Americans and their supporters marched together state trooper police officers and county officials attacked these non-violent marchers with billy clubs and tear gas. Many people were injured or arrested for protesting.
Yet in this speech Dr. King is hopeful. He is convinced that it won't be long until voting equality is won for the African American population.
I love the way he speaks here. Enjoy!
