The Dancing Heart Project is a collaboration and on-going account of the journey between Stas Zelenko and Cathryn Sellers. Their partnership started in 2015 when Stas first started teaching and working with Cathryn after she had completed physical therapy after her Heart Transplant in 2013. Cathryn was born with Complex Congenital Heart disease. She had several Open-Heart Surgeries starting at age 18. She also has had several strokes and other complications through her life. She had decided to try ballroom dancing to help reconnect with her body and hopefully have some fun. Soon after starting lessons, Cathryn set her eyes on the Transplant Games where she hoped to compete in sports for the first time in her life! With Stas’ support and encouragement she pushed to learn both Latin and ballroom routines to bring to competition. Cathryn was determined to honor her donor at the National Level! Stas and Cathryn with a large support team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio and won 3 Gold medals and a 1 Silver! Since that point they have worked further on technique, more complicated routines but ultimately found that they wanted to share the broader message of working together and dance. Through Dance Cathryn has learned a lifetime of lessons that she feels could benefit and inspire others with not only heart conditions but anyone who has an invisible illness, suffers with pain or mental illness. The Dancing Heart Project is their way of giving back and reflecting on this journey.
