Written, voiced & edited by Frank Furtado
-------------------------------
Time Magazine called Lorde one of the most influential teenagers in the world.
Five years ago, ‘Royals’ sat atop the Billboard Hot 100 overtaking artists like Katy Perry (Roar), Miley Cyrus (Wrecking Ball), Lady Gaga (Applause) and Britney Spears (Work Bitch) -- some of the most prominent female pop artists of the late 2000s.
‘Royals’ sounded nothing like it’s competitors, breaking all of the rules with a significantly slower tempo, unique melodic structure and Lorde’s subdued vocals.
Her style would mark a shift in the pop landscape delivering a voice with substance among what Dave Grohl considers “stripper pop.” When Lorde arrived on the airwaves, pop radio would never be the same. And that might sound like an exaggeration until you listen a little closer. This is how Lorde’s Royals changed pop music.
-------------------------------
Can Lorde sing?
Yes, Lorde can sing! Lorde is an alto, the lowest register for female voices. However on Royals she kicks it up a notch and sings at the mezzo-soprano level.
Did Lorde write Royals?
Lorde claims to have written Royals in 30 minutes when she was about 15. She took inspiration from the luxurious lifestyles portrayed in a lot of pop music. She drew inspiration from Lana Del Rey and Kanye West and Jay-Z’s Watch The Throne project.
Can Lorde see music?
Again Lorde claims that she can see sound/music and they appear in different colours. She says ‘Royals’ appears as gold and ‘Green Light’... well as green.
Did Lorde sing for South Park?
No. Sia has actually confirmed that it was her who sang in South Park’s parody episodes of Lorde.
I AM LORDE. YA YA YA.
#Lorde #Royals #Middle8

Grammys don't mean anything anymore. I mean Florence Welch lost to Taylor Swift . . . FOR POP VOCAL ALBUM First, how does that woman lose to ANYONE vocally? Secondly, every other category she was in was rock except that one?
@riyazuo
@riyazuo 6 лет назад
@@iTeacupPanda Pop Vocal Album is awarded to one of the "albums containing at least 51% playing time of newly recorded pop vocal tracks" nominated, and not necessarily the best vocally but the _best_ album in that category (which of course is voted on and very subjective)
@iTeacupPanda
@iTeacupPanda 6 лет назад
@I'm Stuck So essentially that category is just for . . . new music. Almost every album is over 51% playing time. Even still the fact that Taylor could beat Florence at . . . anything other than . . . being caught lying, using white privilage and manipulating narratives? Unghh, hard to swallow subjective or not. :P
@iTeacupPanda
@iTeacupPanda 6 лет назад
@Miguel . . . Really? . . Is it? I mean, I understand if you love it that is great. But, I love a lot of things and I know they're not necessarily great. That album was super commercial and again . . . like reading a 15 year old girl's diary. " Shake It Off " is annoying beyond belief. " Welcome To New York " sounds like it belongs in a bland commercial or Clair's. " Bad Blood " is a good instrumental but the lyrics are garbage. Honestly all three of these songs and a few others have that major writing issue. The only decent song is " Wildest Dreams " and maybe " Style " , the rest and no dig? They're more for people under the age of 15 or at least that is who it mostly appeals to sound wise and an occasional track or two that mom doesn't roll her eyes at in the car and puts up with and starts liking after the fifth time of it playing or so. When thinking of it that way I'd hardly call it an impressive body of work when there are only 2 maybe 3 tracks unless you're a fan that are semi-decent and even then I don't know that non fans would go out of their way to search for them to listen to. There isn't a single track that does something DIFFERENT.

Somebody That I Used To Know definitely had a melancholy vibe with the happy Baa Baa Black Sheep melody vs the sad lyrics, and had an avant garde video too, But it didn’t have the same smokey singing style that Royals set up for the rest of the decade to follow, nor did it have the low-key nature of Royals imo with the Goyte track being minimalistic for the most part but then getting rather climactic towards the end with the layering of the vocal harmonies & crescendo. Plus it’s lyrics were sentimental like a lot of Pop songs but not really the satirical type like Lorde’s one. Not hating on Goyte of course and i do agree they’re both similar with Royals being by no means the first song ever to have the characteristics it possesses, but it’s hard to pick on pop songs since Somebody That I Used To Know which sound similar to it, whereas with Royals you can pick out several that took influence from it as well as several young millennials singers with minimalistic ‘Tumblr’ aesthetics, 80s influenced sound, smokey voices & slight social commentary in between their lyrics too. It’s like one could also point to Fun - We Are Young for another 80s influenced track with simple percussion elements driving the track & anthemic lyrics intended to appeal to a generation of the audience, but I still wouldn’t say that defined the entire decade of pop either.

I love Lorde. And yes she went against mainstream pop norms of 2013, but now, in 2018, her style has been copied by almost all the popular artists 1,000 times over and is now a part of mainstream pop. It’s no longer a cool, one of a kind, awesome, and original style; it’s now an overused, overrated, overdone, overplayed, and all too familiar style. Few artists genuinely succeed at making truly amazing music in this style today. And Lorde is one of them.
@joewhite4456
@joewhite4456 5 лет назад
Went against mainstream pop norms? That's odd, because a lot of the biggest hits from the year before have very similar vibes, take somebody that I used to know, and we are young for example.
@tecwynjones6532
@tecwynjones6532 4 года назад
@@joewhite4456 Well… I would argue that isn't the case. Lorde, especially with Royals, has more of a hip-hop feel to it, while those songs didn't. What was copied was that aesthetic for the most part as you see the newer form of hip-hop everywhere with this minimalism in mind.

I don't get the hype for Billie or Melanie Martinez. Honestly, Melanie is just regurgitating what Kerli did in her earlier work with a breathier vocal and child fetishism. But, people live for it. At least Billie isn't relying on a gimmick.
@iTeacupPanda
@iTeacupPanda 6 лет назад
@Xd25 lol Just because you like someone and want to hear more about them does NOT mean they are underrated. I'm sorry. For her level of talent she is overrated. Can she sing? She is okay. I give her a solid C to C+ on a good day. What is her writing at? It's inconsistant and she has regressed due to relying on her child fetishizing baby gimmick. Third thing is, she is kind of a bitch and thinks too highly of herself and is seemingly rude to her fans. She also seems to think she contributes mote to music than she does. The truth is that out of young female artists in the genre she is in? She is bringing less to the table BY FAR than Aurora or Lorde . Billie is just starting and so gets a little more of a pass and Halsey she is on par with but Halsey also gets a lot of hate and called out on her superficial Tumblr Princess lyricism and try hard Indie wannabe stylism. Does she deserve more popularity and praise than Lorde or Aurora? No. Does Lorde deserve more popularity and praise than Florence, Marina and Lana? No. Yet somehow Melanie is getting more views and album sales than all of them from a small to even a large margin. When the truth is out of female " indie " artists? Talent wise? She is in the bottom 3. There is no reason why she should be outselling women who are 3-4 x more talented than her just because she can polish up what Kerli did 8 or 9 years ago and pretend it's new and Tubmlr eats it up. o.O

Not trying to burst your bubble but you’re defending someone you don’t even know like she’s your lord and savior. All she is is a commodity that sings what’s in front of her and then when she’s not making them as much money as she was then she’s hung out to dry like the other has been. She’s trash. FAX

Lordes critique of mass media/pop culture is likely product of her cultural upbringing in Aotearoa. We receive the pop culture from the US, but because a lot of the cultural institutions presented in this media are absent in NZ we are more easily able to identify the artifice. We don't have the mega rich upper class. We don't have the isolated celebrities. Go out for dinner in a cheap restaurant in town and you wouldn't be surprised to see the prime minister, or an actor from the latest NZ movie. New Zealanders are cynical about the pop culture industry. We know the gross corrupting influence large media companies can have, because out labour/tax laws were changed to suit Warner Bros interests. While Lorde underwent the same kind of raised to be a star production line that many pop artists seem to go through, nothing sat right with her, because of the cynicism that NZers.

I was 13 when this came out and I feel like this really started my whole interest in pop music. The artists (especially female artists) that were around back then didn't seem relatable at all to a 13-year-old, and coming from a family of music teachers and having grown up on classical music it all seemed way too excessive and vain to me. But Lorde was something so interesting and different and she was the first female artist I knew of that kind of presented herself more through her personality and music than her gender and sexuality? I feel like she brought a whole new kind of representation in the business and paved way for other up-and-coming female artists. I don't know, I definitely feel like Pure Heroine was in a way the start of the 2010s pop era and it's still one of my favorite albums ever.

Every time I listen to this song, I think about how she took something near completely unrelateable for many of us (the maximalist and hedonistic lyrical themes in the pop and hip-hop scene of that time) into something pretty much everyone can relate by criticizing it and being upfront about how she's never had any of those experiences as a teenager from New Zealand. It reminds me of this quote from her I read once and had to look up: "I definitely wrote 'Royals' with a lightness in mind….I was definitely poking fun at a lot of things that people take to be normal. I was listening to a lot of hip-hop and I kind of started to realize that to be cool in hip-hop, you have to have that sort of car and drink that sort of vodka and have that sort of watch, and I was like, 'I’ve literally never seen one of those watches in my entire life.'" Sums up the whole thing very well. Another quote I found while looking up the last one: "Around the middle of last year I started listening to a lot of rap, like Nicki Minaj and Drake, as well as pop singers like Lana Del Rey. They all sing about such opulence, stuff that just didn’t relate to me-or anyone that I knew. I began thinking, “How are we listening to this? It’s completely irrelevant.”

@Jodi Gilar Kate Bush came out in the 80's and was a major influence in eccentricity and music from a feminine perspective with romanticism and sensuality with heavy use of female headvoice / falsetto tones She was a good inspiration in Art Pop and Art Rock as well as eccentric music. Bjork cites her as one inspiration and listened to her often. Though their music is different they have a lot of similarities. Bjork has also used similar techniques in her instrumentals where Kate might use ( I can't think of the word ) samples of glass breaking in different levels to form a song , Bjork would do volcano sounds in place of keyboard notes. They're both hugely experimental and I think Kate kind of opened the door for her as a form of an idol ( whether her largest inspiration or not ) to show her what she could do. They're both drawn to the avant garde end of things.

Royals is a good song but it didn't change pop music. Its success is an example of how the change described in the video had already taken place. Royals was released in 2013. You mention Lana del Rey briefly but in the previous couple of years she had released Video Games (73 bpm) and National Anthem (85 bpm) both of which were slower than a lot of pop songs at the time. Both were in a minor key, National Anthem made a critique of opulent lifestyles, had elements of hip hop production and both songs shared the "sultry, smokey, mystifying" vocals that Lorde is described as having. That's almost half a dozen similarities with Royals. By the time Royals was released Lana del Rey had already won an international breakthrough act award so the execs had already taken notice and pop fans were nicely prepared for the phase that Lana helped usher in. Cue Lorde with Royals.

Royals was ahead of its time, it created that pop sound we started hearing 2017-2020. I remember back in late 2013 when that song was charting nobody had really heard anything like it. Pop music at that era was very loud, fast and energetic while this didn't match the style at all. Some were blown away by its difference while others said stuff like "why is she so monotone" or "this song is boring". Then as the years went on we heard quite a few other artists using that same formula, eventually billie eliish.

Great video as always. Was thinking a couple of years ago that Royals was a turning point in popular music and a catalyst for many of the songs on the Top 40. Whilst I personally believe that it inspired a big load of underdeveloped music, I still believe that Lorde’d ability to break the mould of the pop music at the time is incredible.

@Rekko82 6 лет назад
iTeacupPanda Well, Bat For Lashes songs cannot be heard on radio, at least in Finland. I found their music on Watchmojo video "TOP 10 Weirdest Music Videos" ("What's a Girl to Do"). "Fur And Gold" was very good, "Two Planets" was even better. "The Haunted Man" sounded a little bit like they would like to get into radio but "The Bride" is probably my favorite album of them. Well, I easily say "them" although Bat for Lashes is a solo band of Natasha Khan. There are lots of artists who will probably never hit the charts although they are better than the most mainstream artists. It is not a new thing. "Pet Sounds" by The Beach Boys is one of the earliest examples. One of the best albums of all-time was not a hit album during its time in the 60's although it inspired Beatles to make Sgt. Pepper. Donna Summer's "The Wanderer", Iris DeMent, and so on - some amazing albums won't get credit they deserve.

Thank you for taking this topic and doing it justice. I'm a 33 year old musician who loves music, not just the music he loves. I want people to embrace what they love, be it the headiest music, or complete pop-trash. Neither make you smarter, better, dumb, or worse and yet it's so hard to talk about it without people trashing anything that they don't already love. Lorde is one of those artists that, from my experience, people either think IS pretentious, or her fans are, OR that she's just "pop-trash" (Which even if she was, I would still embrace if she wrote as well as she did). I would have never guessed that in my early 30s I would EVER have a moment where I just sat there stunned at how much I loved an album, after just a few listens to an album .. written by .. a teenager. But "Pure Heroine" was that moment I guess. It wasn't even Royals. Royals is a remarkable song, but if you were to look at my Google Music album stats it's literally the song I've given thumbs up the least. On repeated plays when every song ends up being remarkable it actually falls to the background for me. Buzzcut Season's chorus still is one of the most beautiful choruses I've ever heard. EVER. Still sane, a song never talked about is probably my favorite song on the entire album. It's such a mix of being remarkably personal AND simple at the same time that it's the closest thing I've had in years to my mind being blown by a song. I've recently had to admit that not only do I love that album, but that I'd proudly display it among Abbey Road, Rubber Soul, Good Kid MAAD City, To Pimp a Butterfly, Ready To Die, Illmatic, Joanna Newsom's YS and Divers.. you know, albums that are uniquely amazing and greatest album of all time material. To me this is no longer strange, but every once in a while I have to remind myself that I have a possible GOAT album written by a girl in not just her teenage years, but MID teenage years. ... A fucking teenager wrote an album that I, a musician, know I would never be able to write. It's both heartbreaking to me and the greatest thing ever simultaneously. These kind of surprises are the reason that I love music so much. I've wanted to create video essays on music for so long because I write.. pretty much daily.. 10-20 paragraphs in RU-vid comment sections about stuff like this and .. it's probably a waste of everyone's time considering how terrible the RU-vid comment system before you even start to look at the content of them. For now I can step back for a second and know someone is doing a good job at this already. Thanks.

Did you look at Lorde's lyrics? Did you listened to some of her songs except the mainstream ones? Like Ribs, Glory and Gore, A World Alone, Buzzcut Season (from Pure Heroine). The Louvre, Hard Feelings/Loveless, Writer in the Dark, Sober, Liability (from Melodrama). It doesn't sound standard pop music at all, and it can't be as her lyrics are so different from the other pop artists. Her written style is particular, she describes things with sounds and colors, and in a very poetic way. From what I saw, there are almost no pop artist today that write as good as Lorde does. But if you have some names, I would be interested.
