As you're beginning recording, have you ever wondered to yourself, "How loud should my levels be? Where should my gain be set?" I've been there. So, how loud should you record your vocals? How loud should you record your guitars, pianos, and tubas? That's the question this video seeks to answer as we dive into Ableton 11. We want to avoid Clipping and distorting our signal, and we also want to have a healthy enough signal that we're not constantly working to try and get it louder!

Thanks Glenn surprising how few explanations are provided on you tube about this very simple but very important issue. Really helped me out here, appreciate your help to keep me moving forward in trying to learn DAW as a late starter. Find this to be overwhelming at times and great to have someone send some enlightenment. Please keep it coming to us newcomers.

If I'm recording guitar with my scarlett 2i2 and I have ableton loaded up I adjust the gain knob to make sure it's not clipping in to "yellow". Then re check my levels on ableton and adjust my gain knob again on my interface. I stay around -21 to -10. But Then I load up my amp sim "amp room" by softube which has a input and output control. But when I load my preset amp and cab and play it clips the signal in ableton not on my interface. I reduce the output gain in the amp sim untill it doesn't clip red on ableton. But it still reads I have peaks of +2db. Pretty much what im asking is should I reduce it again in the amp sim or using Abletons mixer level? Or is that ok? Any help would be appreciated?

How do you get the wav files at the bottom of the software? Which drag and drop plug in?

I think you mean Ableton’s Simpler sampler? Turning wav files into instruments?

What about the midi tracks from ableton, same thing?

Great question! In general I like to be in that -18 range. For the output of midi elements too. That way as you build your song, you don’t approach the overload level of your mains too quickly. That said, with floating point bit rates internally in ableton, inter-track clipping has become less of a concern. Main rule of thumb is keep the levels lower in your channels and work with your utility, saturation, compression, and limiting in your buss and master buss channels to bring your overall level up. Hope that helps!
