Saw "Spaceballs" not knowing what to expect and wasn't impressed. I remember thinking, during the opening scene, "OK. Enough. We get it, the ship is long." I've never been a fan of Mel Brooks, "Airplane" humor nor British Humour (benny hill, etc.) but I love "The Princess Bride". "Top Secret" pretty good too.

Princess bride was hilarious! Actually watched it with my family a few weeks ago again. Top Secret was hilarious back in the day. Need a cold weekend I can’t do anything outside in so I have an excuse to burn sometime watching that again.

Even without the stipulation Lucas made I don't think there would be any chance of there being any Spaceballs merch. The only official non clothing(there are Spaceballs tee shirts) from any of his films are the Young Frankenstein Vynl idolz that were nade by a seperate company BEFORE they were biught by the wretched Funko IF they did make SB toys it totally wouldn't make sense via the scene in the film as they were parodying that part of the industry

Who said when asked about a Spaceball's Sequel: "I keep being asked about this, all the time... When will you do Spaceballs 2? The simple fact is I don't do Sequels... There might be a Spaceballs 3 - The Search for Spaceballs 2... But there will never be a Spaceballs 2" The KEY lies back with BLAZING SADDLES - In the Small print of his contract when that movie was made, NO SEQUEL COULD BE MADE WITHOUT EITHER HIS DIRECT AUTHORITY OR A DEDICATED TV SHOW BEING PRODUCED... This clause in EVERY MEL BROOKS MOVIE CONRACT! Did it work? Yes... Sort of... The Studio that Produced Blazing Saddles did TRY and create a TV show as son as they saw they could NOT make a Sequel... It Failed!!! And little known but it is out there... A SPACEBALLS CARTOON WAS PLANNED AS WELL to try and get past the clause in the contract... There are small parts of a Pilot that can be found, but it was never completed! This is why you will never see a Spaceballs Sequel... Keep in mind guys, George Lucas doesn't own Lucasfilm anymore, BUT he's one of the largest individual share holders of Disney stock due to the sale which was mostly stock rather than cash. So as a major shareholder, he has SOME pull still...not enough to prevent The Rise of Skywalker from happening, but some!

I really took the OT seriously as a kid because it meant so much to my everday life so Spaceballs kind of rubbed me the wrong way in that aspect But Mel Brooks' movies are definite classics!

My father ran a custom clothing and tailoring business on Miami Beach in the 70's and 80's, and Mel Brooks was a consistent client. He was a very humble guy, despite his success, and I always liked him. For me, his two best films were Blazing Saddles (a film that would never get made today) and History of the World Part I. I doubt that I would have purchased Spaceballs figures, but I would have loved to see them being available.

As I understand it Mel asked for 'Permission' because it was a direct 'jab' at Star War* and George put the Merchandising Caveat in place because if we're being honest with the state of Action Figure Technology at the time one would be hard pressed to Tell a Figure of Lonestarr or Helmet from a Han or Vader Variant *Robin Hood is Public Domain, and Blazing Saddles was Westerns in general, not sure a Specific film it followed - I think he even talked with Hitchcock about High Anxiety, because it was so 'close' to his work as to Permission, Weird Al Yankovic Routinely asks permission of his 'victims' (Many take it as a badge of honor and some have even helped him craft it)... The most infamous exception (for which Al apologizes) was Amish Paradise spoofing Gangsta's Paradise, where Al assumed he had direct permission from Coolio, but there was a miscommunication ... sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry

Nice alternative title for a sequel, "Spaceballs 3" - fits in perfectly with Brooks' style. The animated show... not so much. It tries and sometimes succeeds, grtting some of the original cast in was a big plus,, but something about the show didn't feel quite right.

If there was any logical reason behind the "No merchandise", it was probably because Lucas didn't want to have to approve the designs for it, after making sure that it looked different enough from anything in Star Wars. Unfortunately, part of how U.S. Copyright protection works is that you have to be seen to be defending your copyright, or your claim gets weaker. Lucas couldn't reasonably have expected Spaceballs merch to have cost him anything on its own, but if the Lord Darkhelmet toy turned out to look just like a Darth Vader toy, with a larger head, and the Lonestar toy looked just like a blonde Han Solo, etc., then if Lucas didn't take legal action against them, it would make it harder to make his case against someone who was genuinely ripping off Star Wars. Yeah, there were no real Star Wars toys on the shelves in '87, but remember, he WAS still planning to go back and do the prequels, at some point. He'd been saying that since RotJ came out, if not before. He probably had no idea back then that it would be around 20 years before he came back to it, but I'm sure he had in mind that when he did the prequels, there would be no shortage of ripoff products, and if he didn't keep defending his Star Wars rights, it would be a pain in the ass to try to legally stop them all. I remember the Spaceballs animated series coming out. I think it was on the cable channel "Spike". I had heard about it when it was in development, but had kind of forgotten about it until stumbling across a marathon showing of several (if not all) of the episodes. I watched a few minutes of it, and that was it. I didn't care for it. Maybe other episodes were better, if I'd given it a chance, but I don't think it would have been worth my time. ... What I saw was some kind of childhood flashback about how Dark Helmet and President Scrube (?) were secretly "Sithies" (like saying sissies, with a lisp). I mostly only remember that it had to do with DH being really obsessed with some woman's breasts. It may have been his nanny. He may have used mind control to get to grope her, or something. I don't really remember the details well. Just that that part really wasn't a parody of Star Wars, or anything else I was familiar with, but just boob jokes, and kind of messed up because it was a WAY pre-teenage DH, from what I saw. Watching a ... let's say 4-7 year old sexually harass a woman, possibly while mind controlling her, really isn't the kind of humor I want from a Star Wars parody, so I never looked into it again.

Did anybody else notice anything strange about Spaceballs the colouring book I seen a very red and blue robot on the cover of that colouring book who looks very familiar;). Naj Naj wink wink. What is Optimus Prime doing on the cover of a Spaceballs colouring book did anybody else notice that was Optimus Prime on the cover of the book? God there's been so many little gags about Spaceballs the search for more money but sadly I've never seen it come to be still hoping;). Same thing will probably never see Rick Moranis in another movie other than in CGI form I still think somebody has CGI scam that guy so that they can put him in movies after he passes away.its seriously a thing where are they can digitally scan actors and then use their likeness over a double.its why a lot of us have been questioning why Paul Walker look so freaky where are they CGI at him in the last movie that he was in where they needed to CGI him in for a few scenes after his passing. They're almost at the point of no longer needing live actors merely scanning their likeness into a computer and digitally imposing their likeness over another person about another two or three years five at most and that'll be a thing.if you think I'm crazy look it up there's been a few stories in mainstream media about it

It's a bit of a double-edged blade in my opinion. Aggressively protecting an intellectual property to the point that it becomes disruptive to the genre and medium at large is obviously not cool, but at the same time I tend to think that his overzealous guarding of Star Wars as a concept was in part because he cared a lot about ensuring his standards were met and his vision realized exactly, and that's why the originals and the old extended universe were so great. I'm sure the money was a large part of it, but I think passion for his creation played a role as well.

In 1987 i was stupid enough to believe they already existed...it’s promoted in the movie, so they wouldn’t lie to the audience, right? I think a small collection of space balls figure would compliment any Star Wars collection, the argument of Lucas doesn’t seem valid here...might be another reason behind it...finally, a parody is a way to honor the original!

In Lucas defense Spaceballs realize fair use as it is a spoof of Star Wars, one the things that determines if something that determines copyright infringement for fair use, is it taking away the potential or could confused for the original. It’s possible if their was space balls toys they could be confused for Star Wars or become more popular then Star Wars toys taking away the customer for the Star Wars toys. Witch then could have lead Lucas to presue legal action.

i don't understand why stuff don't hold up anymore. i think it's cuz nothing shocks us anymore. if it was funny to me once probably still is. unless i was 6 when i thought it was funny or good

Guess with Comedy once you hear a joke a few times it’s not funny. It’s like you don’t want to go see a stand up comic do his best of jokes like a singer can do his greatest hits. Jokes get old

Honestly the film wasn't popular enough to warrant merchandise at the time, it came out too late to be relevant...besides, it would have broken the joke in the movie if there was legit merch out there. It was funny at the time, but it's not a DVD that I grab off the shelf very often.

Actual Spaceballs merchandise would dilute the satirical nature/impact of the movie IMO. I figure Brooks felt the same. Who knows for sure?

I thought Spaceballs was HILARIOUS when I was a kid in the 1980’s, but I tried to watch it a couple of weeks ago and ended up turning it off about 15 minutes into it. It’s dumb as hell.

If Spaceballs was merchandised, it would have consummated actual infringement on Star Wars IP. As you mention, Spaceballs was a parody of contemporary sci-fi cinema - not just Star Wars. That's what Spaceballs hangs it's hat on. I wouldn't be surprised if Brooks and Lucas agreed merchandising wasn't very funny.
