Welcome back to the 5 Play Challenge, with five plays involving the infamous Block/Charge. We will show five video clips, all with a block charge situation in three different ways giving ample opportunity to make a ruling. First, is in real time. Second, is zoomed in and slowed it down. Third, an analysis of what happened is given and the correct ruling revealed. These videos, as always, are dedicated to educating officials on the rules of basketball.
The 5 play challenge is not set up to explain the rule in detail but instead simply references rules as they are written and guidelines to help appropriately apply those rules. Every block charge video we show in this segment is clipped from actual footage of high school basketball games, involving high school athletes. The goal is to provide as much possible information to assist the way we see these types of plays in the future. The more plays we see, with detailed explanation, the better we will get at identifying the correct ruling more consistently.
Video #1
- Drive into the lane and a block was called. Did the official get it right?
Video #2
- Fast break play that ends up with colliding player and a block call being made. Was this one correct?
Video #3
- Another crash in the paint but this one is on the shoulder. Should this play had been ruled a block or a charge?
Video #4
- Awkward contact on this one. Did the defender have a legal guarding position?
Video #5
- This one is really close. Fast break play with a block called by the official. Watch this one and decide yourself.
Watching video clips is a good way to hone your basketball officiating skills and retain your learning for future use. We believe the most effective way to assist in building a correct understanding of rules and how to apply them is by watching videos with annotation, diagrams and shading to highlight key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and the 5 Play Challenge segment, creates videos in a fun and interesting way to test your ability to properly recognize specific plays, but don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

That last one was a tough one. Center official was just in a bad spot due to the fast break. Great hustle to even get somewhat close to the play. Great plays, thank you for creating!

I'm pretty sure play one has a mistake. Defender established LGP. Defender moved laterally to maintain LGP. Contact to torso, player control by rule. (Nfhs) NCAA is where lateral movement/repositioning is not allowed to maintain LGP on airborne player.
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute Год назад
A defender cannot move into a new path of an airborne shooter as an airborne player is unable to change direction to avoid contact. NFHS may not be written as well as the NCAA but is applied the same.

I really thought the last was a block. Too bad we don't have slow motion on the court. Good stuff though. Much like travelling we have to see lots of video to get these calls right at full speed . 4/5

Is there any consideration of how much time/distance an offensive player has to avoid contact or change direction once a defender gets into a legal guarding position...?
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute Год назад
When guarding a moving player with the ball, No time or distance is required to obtain an initial legal position

On play #4, Red #35 has his feet wider than his shoulders. Am I crazy, or is that illegal? (Don’t have my NFHS Rulebook on be right now) With that in mind, I believe that should’ve been a blocking foul. Thoughts?
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute 6 месяцев назад
If the contact happens in the leg, the part that is illegal, it would be a block. But the contact was in the middle of the torso which is legal.

On play four , Lead couldn't see the LGP from that angle

Last one is a block guy started his layup by holding the ball and the guy walks into him i think
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute Год назад
High school basketball has no provision for starting a layup. It is solely based on whether the player was airborne or not.
@zakariabadi8576
@zakariabadi8576 Год назад
@@OfficialsInstitute so you have to be airborne to draw a foul not just start a layup, is it the case for like NBA or FIBA ruling? or its different?

To me they were all blocks. Those defenders' feet were always moving, never set. Two feet inbounds, planted, shoulders square facing the opponent. I didn't see that on any of these plays. Even in slow mo. That's why it's reffing I guess.
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute 2 года назад
The rules book does not say a player needs to be set or planted nor do shoulders need to be square.
@IkaikaKahoano
@IkaikaKahoano 2 года назад
@@OfficialsInstitute Really? I thought that is the definition of LGP? It was that verbatim in the NFHS rules book. Has that changed? If so what is the correct definition?
@IkaikaKahoano

@@OfficialsInstitute Are you saying it's just feet planted torso facing opponent = LGP?
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute 2 года назад
@@IkaikaKahoano ART. 2 ... To obtain an initial legal guarding position: a. The guard shall have both feet touching the playing court. b. The front of the guard’s torso shall be facing the opponent.
