Welcome back to the 5 Play Challenge, with five plays involving basketball shooting. We will show five video clips showing a shooting situation and possibly continuous motion in three different ways giving ample opportunity to make a ruling. First, is in real time. Second, is zoomed in and slowed it down. Third, an analysis of what happened is given and the correct ruling revealed. These videos, as always, are dedicated to educating officials on the rules of basketball.
The 5 play challenge is not set up to explain the rule in detail but instead simply references rules as they are written and guidelines to help appropriately apply those rules. Every shooting video we show in this segment is clipped from actual footage of high school basketball games, involving high school athletes. The goal is to provide as much possible information to assist the way we see these types of plays in the future. The more plays we see, with detailed explanation, the better we will get at identifying the correct ruling more consistently.
Video #1
- Player receives the ball on a pass and fumbles slightly before getting hit by a defender. Was he shooting? Watch and find out.
Video #2
- Break away play to the basket but as the ball handler is making his way for a layup is bumped by the defender. The officials rules the ball out of bounds. Will you agree?
Video #3
- Shot goes up on this play with contact happening after the ball was clearly released on a try for goal, but no whistle is blown. Watch and see what you think.
Video #4
- After a pass down low, beneath the basket, the ball handler makes a shot fake to draw the defender in the air. Contact happens and a shot attempt is made, but when did the foul occur? You decide.
Video #5
- Pass is made and a foul occurs as the player lands on the court and then shoots. You gotta see this one. It's really close.
Watching video clips is a good way to hone your basketball officiating skills and retain your learning for future use. We believe the most effective way to assist in building a correct understanding of rules and how to apply them is by watching videos with annotation, diagrams and shading to highlight key teaching points. Taking away and remembering specifics on a rule is easier when visual aids are used to present in a way that is easy to listen to and understand.
The Officials Institute, and the 5 Play Challenge segment, creates videos in a fun and interesting way to test your ability to properly recognize specific plays, but don't leave you guessing about whether there was a foul, violation or not. Even though we cannot officiate in slow motion or freeze frames, by watching and reviewing video video in this fashion, we are able to "retrain our brain" so we can start seeing plays more accurately when we do see them in real time and increase our ability to get the call right.

All respect, Josh prob had a couple incorrect…penalizing the offense by calling a foul on the defense. Allow the play to start-develop-finish before whistling. Play accuracy will be optimized by employing a patient whistle.

PLay #2 is obviously a shooting foul. Then play #4, player pump fakes, defender is in air and lands on player as he is going to shoot. The ruling in the video is that player was not starting the act of shooting, but what else was he doing if not starting to shoot, he had both feet on floor and may have shot from that position, did he actually have to jump to start the act? In Play #2 the player was another step from shooting still but gets benefit of doubt that he is going to shoot (clearly), Play #4 the player never gets to jump because defense lands on top of him... I would have said he was shooting.

By written rule, he stopped his act of shooting when he recoiled for the contact, but your argument is worth considering.

#4, #5 do not seem correct. Continuous Motion rule and 6.7 Comments are not properly applied. Patient whistle, not penalizing the offense by calling a foul on the defense, will get all of these plays called correctly.

In the last play, what did you mean when you asked if “the foul occurred before the player was grounded”? What is the definition of grounded when a player is in the act of shooting?
@OfficialsInstitute
@OfficialsInstitute Год назад
A player can either be airborne or not. So using the work grounded simply describes a player who is not airborne.

Josh on play #4 I agree the primary defender may not have committed a foul “during the act of shooting”. BUT did you notice that the secondary defender (#34) came in and rested his arm on top of the shooters head just as the shooter went airborne? As you have advised many times, hold the whistle to see how the play develops. Had this been done, the second foul is a shooting foul all day regardless of the first defenders actions.

Did not see that one. Good catch.

Thanks for this. very intresting. Are officials instructed to call line-ball calls one way or the other? I would like to see it called as a shooting foul if its line ball.

Great job as always, Joshua. We don’t want to penalize the offense by calling a foul on the defense too soon, not allowing the play to start develop and finish before the whistle. Two of the 5 plays seem incorrect. Take another look making the call when the play is over. Best, for a strong season finish.
