Chickens and owning a lot of them can have some problems. It will cost you more to have more chickens and they may start laying more eggs then you can handle.

"Vegetarian chickens" Funniest phrase I've ever heard. I started with 6 and was up to 74 at my highest and STILL had more customers than eggs. I currently have 11 hens and give away my excess to our low income patients with children at home. In these hard times, we need to help each other out. One small suggestion - you might want to crush your eggshells before adding them to the compost pile. Easier to break down, easier for chickens to eat, & doesn't teach them to eat their own eggs as soon as they lay them.

Thank you Lori, we are bad at taking the time to crush them down but we should!

Stick those eggshells on a baking sheet right next to the eggs. Let them cool, toss them in the blender to break them up really well and feed them back to the chickens as well.

We have 20 chickens. 2 are 10 years old, 2 are 7, 6 are 6 , 6 are 4 and 4 are 3 this summer. We average 7 eggs a day. We are incubating a dozen eggs right now to help increase egg production. The older girls not laying are true work horses with digging up our gardens and helping to turn the compost. We water glass some of our eggs for winter when they aren't laying. I also make quiche to have in the freezer as well as freeze dry eggs for easy scrambled eggs in the winter or for camping trips. All the egg shells get washed and baked and then blended and give back to the girls. One of our girls is handicapped with severe scissor beak so she gets a scrambled egg with the shell about every other day. I also have a few customers who constantly want eggs and pay a good price as well as bring the girls kitchen scraps.

I'm a single person household, & I have TWENTY hens & 3 roosters.... AND... 3 turkeys.... AND...3 pot belly pigs (not by choice, I "inherited" them from irresponsible neighbors). Oh, & I have 2 dogs & TWELVE cats (most a product of another neighbor that moved & abandoned about 25 ferals, which over a period of time I was able to catch them & get them spayed or neutered, & home kittens in between... which I still feed).

You always have great information in your videos. When considering number of chickens, you also have consider that hens will typically only lay eggs for 2-1/2 - 3 years but they live for 7-9 years. In order to have constant egg production, you have to add to your flock every other year. From the time that a chick is hatched to when it finally starts producing eggs is about 6-8 months depending on the breed. When we initially planned for our flock, we had no idea how many roosters we would end up so we had to create a plan to house the roosters.

I've saved shells in the freezer until I've enough to fill the dehydrator. I run them through a spice grinder and jar them until I get ready for the garden. Only have a quart and a pint jar of ground shells so far, and six dozen will fit into a pint jar. We've been recycling everything back into the animals as we can.

We sell by the dozen to our local feed store. I had 8 hens, 8 roosters, and just added 20 pullets. Soon spring will hit & a art will be out front with for sale eggs. We'll see how it goes. Since Christmas 8 hens produced 360 eggs through NY winter not too shabby.

Chicken math is real!!! Our household is only 2 adults and 2 teenagers. I added more hens a month ago. My wife confronted me about it… “you realize we have 10 chickens now right?”. Uh, yes… I can count to ten. Then she said “you realize that’s potentially 70 eggs per week right?” Uh… well… I didn’t think about it that way 😂 Oh well, there are plenty of neighbors who appreciate excess eggs 😎

I love the coment you can never have to many chickens! I started with 25 meat birds and 10 hens. Then the chicken math hit me square in the face! I went to bed one night and woke up to 6 ducks, 11 turkeys and countless other chickens. Best I can tell I probably have at least 300 or a little more. Of these I would say 100 to 150 are meat birds. They are all young still so I don't have any eggs yet. Turkeys are my favorite!

I have 50 between two coops. Making changes this season to breeds I keep. Will be selling my 4 Brahmas ( roo and 3 hens). Will also reduce the ISA's I have and get rid of the Buff orpingtons (1 roo and 3 hens). By summers end my flock will be all French copper marans in one coop, and a few ISA's with Bresse in the other. Pretty much going to streamline what I have. Bresse for meat/eggs/chick sales and the french copper marans for eggs/chick sales. I enjoy my chickens but the "mix" is no fun if you want to keep genetics clean and be a more self sustaining flock. I will only keep 1 roo in each coop here on out, and I will keep a spare each roo in a third coop that is portable and winterizeable. Eggs sold to eat, are not enough to hardly cover the feed, so selling chicks/pullets will at least make the flocks a little more profitable. At least now at this point, selling hens brings you a couple extra bucks over what you have into them. So selling down the flock won't be as painful.

@munchkindoodles
@munchkindoodles Год назад
There is no such thing as too many chickens. 🤣 Back when my kids would show chickens we could have 200 birds. That was usually just during the hatching season. Last few years I have been keeping 20 to 25. This spring I am trying a new breed. Already got two orders of 25 chick’s each order and have a third order coming this month. All from different breeders. They are straight run and I can tell so far it’s about 50/50. They are a duel purpose breed so all the extra roosters will be going in the freezer. Hoping to have at least 30 birds from the new ones when all the culling is done. 🐣🐥🐣

What is the purpose of adding rosemary amd rep pepper to their feed? I can see the nutritional yeast as a supplement. Are the herbs for antibacterial properties?

Rosemary, I have researched is a natural antibacterial & red pepper helps clear phlegm or keep chicken passage clear. A tiny dash of cayenne to their food does the same.

Chicken math is my malignancy in multiplication only. I’ll never tell how many of those beautiful creatures scratch and peck around my property because the government doesn’t need to know that, lol. I have no need for pesticides or antidepressants and probably won’t have much grass to mow! Crazy chicken lady? I am a certifiable basket case. I have one rooster who attacks my dog and another who appears out of nowhere to rescue her! Not only will that one never be eaten, I may even buy him a headstone!
