How Many Can I Graze? How Long Can I Graze? How Can I Calculate Stocking Rate? To answer these questions, Jack Arterburn, Nebraska Extension Beef Systems Educator, walks through the simple process of calculating grazing days using estimates of forage demand based on animal weight and estimates of forage supply found on the internet. This method applies to all grazers (cows, calves, cow/calf pairs, steers, heifers, replacement heifers, yearlings, sheep, goats, horses) because it is based on consumption which is estimated using animal weight.
Grazing Days = Forage Supply - estimated forage production from the Web Soil Survey multiplied by 25% (0.25) utilization / Forage Demand - animal weight multiplied by 2.6% (0.026)
Days in Pasture = Grazing Days / Number of Animals
Number of Animals = Grazing Days / Days in Pasture
