Representative Steve Simon (DFL Hopkins/St. Louis Park) says a proposed Minnesota constitutional amendment is largely about religion. He says if sexual orientation is innate as science is showing us, and not a lifestyle choice, then God created gay people. He asks how many gay people must God create before we accept that he wants them around.

Politics and religion mix too often, and it's unfair to those who don't believe in God, who must take the brunt of believers who insist there holy book is law. When in matter of fact it isn't, and when a book is interpreted in so many different ways the strength of its meaning becomes diluted. No one is right, there is no 'right' way. There is only acceptance.

You are so so right. I keep saying that people have to be critical about what they believe in. All these religions are insitutions created by humans. They weren’t created by God. And there is no absolute truth in this life and we can only learn to coexist. Otherwise we’ll end up killing each other based on whatever we dislike or disagree on. Unfortunately few people nowadays believe in bringing people together and most of the big political figures enjoy being populist, only serving a part of the society and completely canceling the other one. 🤦🏻‍♂️

the only people who are made uncomfortable by homosexuality are religious people with a total lack of compassion. This is why the separation of church and state is necessary, if we decide to base the standards of our society and our civilization on myth and folklore, what would be the difference between our country and one run in accordance with the principles of sharia law? This is one of the most beautiful lines that I´ve ever read about homosexuality. It´s all about love, there´s nothing prettier in the world than falling in love for somebody, than committing yourself into a project of life with someone, and some selfish close minded people want to ban it, to not allow a group of people to have that feeling fulfilled. I would like to accept homosexuals and heir decisions...but at the same time sometimes I don't like them and support them... I believe into a higher being, but do not use religion as an excuse to condemn homosexuality... sometimes I think about the future and think.... What if somebody I love came out gay?... These can be my children, cousins, siblings, nephews, etc. How do I accept them, even though the change won't happen from night to day?

We in "enlightened" Canada have had gay marriage legal for years now, and my wife and I teach our 2 children that being gay is no different then being black, or jewish, or asian - as lady gaga says you were born this way. Discrimination is discrimination. It is wrong no matter who it is perpetuated against. EVERYONE deserves true equality.

@UATimka 1:27-32 - you seemed to love to pick and choose scripture. Whom was Paul talking of in 1:1-1:26? Oh, those that prayed to golden statues, idolotry, etc. God gave them over (changed in some interpretations) to homosexuality. It was punishment for idolotry. When you are punished, is the punishment the sin, or the result of the transgression?

This guy knows that it's not about putting the other side down, which only puts their defenses up and makes them fight harder. He knows how to speak to what's important to them, how to speak their language so they'll sense that respect and in turn reason with him. People just want to be listened to, and if you can show them that you understand where they're coming from, that's the best way to win any debate.

@Galmozzi9 Okay smarty , what do you suggest we do about people who only get sexual gratification from violence or from having sex with sexually immature humans or those that prefer sex with fresh human corpses or those that prefer animals after all the ASPCA might have some concern there... how do you determine if an animal has consented to this use. Sexual preference really has nothing at all to do with how you were born it has to do with what goes on in your head.

You speak with heartfelt truth and logic and that's not common on these posts. Most comments are from unChristlike Christians who do not follow Jesus' command not to cast stones or "Love thine enemy" There is FEAR of what gay lifestyle means so I inform people. I work looking after sick and elderly,volunteer,pay taxes,love my neighbors,live a life as God made me in Truth,Love and Peace. I have a son that I'm proud of. And I approve this message. This is a very well-reasoned plea. I would compare this legislation with the Jim Crow Laws in the 1960's. While the legislators may have strongly believed in segregation, their hate is looked back on largely with shame by the American people. If these types of laws pass, they will be overturned in the future and looked on in the same light, just as segregation laws were. Treating people with equality is what is needed to prevent such injustices.

@sandworm3 I'm sorry, at what point did he speak on God's behalf? Because I'm pretty sure he said, "I think that's true" which sounds like an opinion to me. Is there some fallacy in his declaration of nature vs. nurture? Of homosexuality being innate? Can someone control being gay? Can it be encouraged during a child's development? And reading what God has said? Did God write you a memo explicitly stating that being gay is a sin? Even if it is, aren't sins forgiven as long as one repents?

@UATimka Can you translate that to English please? I've enjoyed many speeches in my time, even from Martin Luther King Jr., but it doesn't make me black. I've heard speeches from kids with gay parents...but my parents weren't gay. I've even heard speeches from Buddhists, etc. yet don't claim any of those as my religion. Where in the Bible are you speaking of? Old or New Testament? Which translation? And you seemed to be quite obsessed with sex rather than marriage. Are you simply not happy?

We will always accomplish more when we communicate out of love! @Blueflamez30 that is why there is a legal document you can fill out called a power of attorney for health care where you state your wishes regarding who you want to have making decisions for you in the event you are incapacitated and where a person can make it known they want their partner around. Actually spouses of the hetero orientation need to do that too because Hippa makes it unlawful for health care professionals to share medical information with someone unless they have permission.

Chapter 25 says I can own slaves, just not on the North border. 11:10 says shellfish is an abomination! 19:19 says don't plant different crops in the same field or wear a double blend fabric. Why aren't these verses getting equal time?

Pure win, Rep Simon. Why are we even having this choice vs. lifestyle discussion still? If you can "choose" between straight and gay, then you're BISEXUAL. Gay people can't choose to be straight any more than I can choose to be gay. Either you're attracted to someone or you're not. But whatever your orientation, you should be allowed to marry whomever you want.

The original words did not actually refer to gays in general, it referred to shrine or temple prostitution, which was a form of idolatry. I have no idea if he would have agree or disagreed with gays in general, but I know Jesus would have loved God's gay children as much as God's straight children.

Also, totally unrelated point but in Genesis, why does God punish the people for making a move on Abram/Abraham's WIFE when he ordered her to say she was his sister (which, granted, she was)? This happens 3 times, and each time, they get punished for Abraham's lie, and they didn't know she was married. Where is the justification in that?

@sparkplugsf: I did not pull my information from "discriminatory stereotypes" they are from studies by: the ACP, Trayce Hanson, Judith Stacey, Paul Cameron...ect. There have been studies that came to the opposite result as these studies but there isn't "no evidence" as you claim. Even if those two points are not true it is still a fact that homosexuality (based on twin studies) is not fully genetic and environment does play a large role in it.

My great distrust in God comes from the fact that it never acts it never answers prayers and it allows war, famine & suffering to happen I do not think that jesus, God, The Father Son Holy Ghost call it what you will would really want those sort of things. So therefore as there has been no divine intervention thus far other than too a few priveledged individuals I would say that God doesnt exist for me. Maybe it resides within all of us?

@SmalltimR I found God in my heart and in my life and in people I meet and things I see. I just don't call it God. I call it love. Who is that external source you have found to tell you the truth? Who told you the things God "claims"? I hope that other people follow this belief have: when all the people are living in love and respect for everyone and everything on this planet, this will be a pretty cool place to live, don't you think?
