What a great material to present these fundamental techniques and stylistic traditions! I often think of what Sir Andras Schiff said about studying piano; he mentioned the logic in learning in chronological order. The more I think about it the more it makes sense. This video is a great example of this idea.

This was really helpful! Especially concerning the mechanics of the embellishments and the articulations that make the piece sound Baroque. In my teens when I played violin for several years, I played the melody line of this piece. It’s fun to learn it on piano and be able to include the accompaniment. Thank you!

Great advice thank you. I wonder in this piece, why do people play the E at the start of bar 3 with finger 3 if they're then going to play the mordent with 3 2 1. Doesn't this mean you have to shift position twice: once to play the E, then again to play the C with finger 3 also. Why not play the E with finger 5 then you're already in position for the mordent with finger 3 on C.

I have a version of this piece from a book "First lessons in Bach", there the phrases are instructed to play legato and are connected with a tie. There, legato helps with phrasing. So using legato to help phrasing is ok I suppose? It just uses the capabilities of a modern piano, we should not necessarily try to copy other instruments, like clavicord, don't we?

To make the matter even more confusing, starting around the 19th century editors and composers started to use different types of slurs: some mean legato literally, and some (those are usually longer) are phrasing slurs, which don’t mean literal legato within a slur, but give hints about phrasing😅 Legato and phrasing often interact, but not necessarily equal.

Thank you very much for the video. Well done 👍 I have only one question about the speed of the minuet 😉. It’s 3/4 and in the past time , it was danced ( the woman dresses up to 20 kg heavy) no one could dance it in this speed … I’m sorry but the character of the minuet is definitely not “ hopping”😅… it’s a more or less a “ walking” dance… isn’t it ? I like your videos , they are very helpful 👍

Yes, you are right, partially. But luckily, not all nations and not at all times tortured women that much. I have also written this is a provocative tempo, although it’s absolutely okayish if to perceive it through the Italian tradition.

At a glance I thought that is Henle. You right, Mutopia seems to be copyright-free edition. Have a nice day!
