My Goodness, he just explained the bulk of the fucking UNCLOS that I studied one whole semester in college, only in 6 minutes.

believe me there's no major in college that you can't study all of it in less than 6 months, but they stuff useless information to elongate our studying period so we have to pay more. It's a win for them and a lose for our time, however the only useful thing about it is that we get to practice on useful and useless topics which is not bad, but not needed for we can acquire it in work fields. In short, schools are a bad for us.

colleges are deliberately time inefficient to maximize cash extraction from students. many 4 year degrees have maybe 6-12 month worth stuff in it. STEM and medical stuff are exceptions. you need 24-36 months for those.

Laws don't tell us what's right or wrong, they tell us what we will be punished for doing. Those are very different things.
@SportSoulLife
@SportSoulLife 7 лет назад
gantmj Exactly. Youd be stupid if you think that the maritime buisness follows all the laws. Many of them are more expensive to follow than to get fined for not following them, so ofcause those will be ignored. Also, there is no police on the seas, as long as the crew and the company is fine with it, you can do whatever the fuck you want on the sea.

A fun story about my flying experience with KLM (dutch) and DELTA (us); When i was 18 (well over the legal drinking age in the netherlands, wich was 16 at the time.) i went on a KLM flight to new york. When the stewardess came over and i asked for a beer, she told me that i needed to be 21, since we were flying to new york and american law was in effect. I had a great holiday, got on my DELTA flight back to amsterdamn. When the american stewardess came over i was already smirking, and asked for a beer again, and was declined again. She said; ''This is an american plane, and thus american soil, so american law applies''. She disregarded my previous experience, and i had to settle for a coke once again. I knew one of these ladies had to be wrong, now i know who was :D

This video is really about the Law of the Sea, and more particularly the rules agreed by by signatories to the UN Law of Sea convention. Maritime Law is related to commercial matters involving ships,cargo, navigation, pollution, crewing, salvage, and passengers, and dates back to ancient times. Different countries are signatories to different sets of rules (e.g Hague Rules, Hamburg Rules, Rotterdam Rules, Hague-Visby Rules) embodying interpretations of in finding liability and fault as well as to the limitation of liability, suitable forums, standing, multi-modal transport, contracts, etc. etc. There are also many other aspects.

There are specific anti-Piracy measures in place. Piracy is treated in the same way as torture, slavery, and apartheid. These are called the _jus cogens_ crimes, also referred to by the states' obligations as the _erga omnes_ obligations. It pretty much means any state has jurisdiction. Literally. Any state can say "Fuck this." and step in to battle a breach of such an obligation. So technically, if you commit piracy, you're invading the entirety of NATO (most probably) - yeah, bad idea.

Lol, what the narrator fails to understand is that Martime/admiralty law has been brought onto the land.... (Roman) civil law = admiralty law - law of the sea. (MILITARY law)

Second Thought Yes but ships can be registered in any costal/port city so a Dutch ship could be registered in Amsterdam or Rotterdam or any other Dutch port. Federal countries like the US maintain registeries in each costal state in order to determine which state laws apply on board.
