I remember reading a George Orwell essay about how revolutionary leaders would often use simple, colloquial words in their speeches, to make themselves seem more representative of the wishes of the people at large, while established leaders would use flowery and esoteric language to make themselves seem more qualified and experienced than the average citizen. MLK blends both here, because he is both.

I think this is the same reason why Donald Trump has won, because working class liberals (not JUST white either) have grown more upset with corporatist Democrats who are ostensibly on their side than with conservative Republicans whos policies are actively harmful.

rodrigo pozzer true, most conservatives forget that MLK was a socialist
@WildWestSamurai
@WildWestSamurai 7 лет назад
Well... I wouldn't say King was a socialist, but he was indeed such a radical that he was continually accused of being a Communist. Conservatives do conveniently forget the scandal in Congress when MLK Day was voted on as a federal holiday. In the 1980s, two Republicans brought a 300-page packet of documents alleging King was a Communist to Congress, and a Democrat threw the packet to the floor and stomped on it, calling it a "packet of filth." Now, they want to whitewash King and make him a conservative icon, despite his other speeches clearly showing him to be a radical on the Left spectrum of politics.
@BigFatCock0
@BigFatCock0 7 лет назад
Freedom for a whole race of people isn't a partisan issue.
@WildWestSamurai
@WildWestSamurai 7 лет назад
BigFatCock, that may usually be correct, but here's the thing. At the end of the day, some ideologies are simply better suited to certain movements than others. Liberal ideologies are usually better suited to moving forward in society, to creating progress on certain issues, than conservative ideologies. If conservativism is heavily reliant on things like traditional attitudes and values, then that ideology is going to inevitably butt heads with movements revolving around granting people rights they didn't have before. Because an ideology that revolves around winding the clock back is a natural opponent of a movement about change. As Mark Twain said, "The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out, the conservative adopts them."
@samuranga8537

How did he write it? He didn't. It was written by Stan Levison and Clarence Jones. King didn't really write his speeches. Those two did. Just a heads up, Boston U has admitted that he plagiarized at least 1/3 of his Phd thesis. So, really, he's not a Dr. And...I think we can drop the Luther too. Just Martin King will do fine. After we bring him back down to Earth, where he belongs, we can begin to examine his actual message, and his actual life and desires.

@Nerdwriter1 I think a deconstruction of Chance the Rapper could be an interesting topic to tackle. He had two mix tapes that receive higher critical acclaim than his most recent album "Coloring Book" by most hip hop review source, but not near the popularity. I think there was something about his most recent album that transcended genre. I feel like you could do a great job with it and provide some interesting insight. Not just his "rapping ability" but the way he manipulates language and cadence to create a feeling. Just some food for thought, but I for one would be really excited to see a nerd writer covers chance the rapper video.

MLK plagiarized his phd thesis, while his friend and extremely talented writer, Stanley Levison, wrote the overwhelming bulk of the speeches, including 'I have a dream'. MLK was too busy running trains on any willing girls he and his best friend Baird Ruston could find at the southern baptist leadership conference, well Baird liked the men more, but whatever. From Wikipedia - Stanley Levison co-wrote with Clarence Benjamin Jones one of the drafts for Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech presented at the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. Source - Hansen, D, D., The Dream: Martin Luther King Jr. and the Speech that Inspired a Nation (2003), New York, Harper Collins, p. 70.

I'm surprised that you didn't mention that King quoted the Bible pretty much directly again at 5:45. I've copied out that passage below (note that King was definitely drawing from a different translation, since the Old Testament portion of the NIV was not published until 1978): "Every valley shall be raised up, every mountain and hill made low; the rough ground shall become level, the rugged places a plain. And the glory of the Lord will be revealed, and all people will see it together." - Isaiah 40:4-5 (NIV)

Are all examples given as alliterations really significant? I agree that words like 'dignity and discipline' or 'trials and tribunals' give a poetic effect but five random words in random places beginning with s in the 'Five score years..' sentence wont qualify as an intentional use of alliteration.

I would love to show it to my girlfriend, but she doesn't know English at all. I took the time to create the subtitles to Portuguese, but now i need the approval of the channel's owner (you) or another fellow Portuguese speakers so the subtitle can be available on the video. I'm always talking to her how amazing your videos are and trying to teach a little of English to her and i just need a little push, that i think could be this video. I would be glad if so. Thanks a lot, keep up the good work.

The motion design in this piece is tasteful and beautiful. I applaud your color choices as well. Nice work!
