Tyr Odinson is the eldest son of Odin, the general of Asgard’s armies, and the Norse God of War. He is also one of the most neglected Thor characters in Marvel. He constantly switches from unimportant side character to full on villain with little explanation. Whilst Thor, Balder, Sif, and even the Warriors Three have all received their own comics to tell their stories, Tyr has not. Nothing better exemplifies the neglect that Tyr has received than the fact that the single most important thing he ever did, binding Fenris, never once appears in the comics. This occurred in the Norse Myths and we are told that the event took place in the Marvel Universe, but never once has Marvel seen fit to show it. That is until the release of The Sword of Surtur, a novel by CL Werner set in the Marvel Universe with Tyr as the main character. Now we’ll finally see how this Norse Myth took place in the Marvel Universe on Thor Talk.

What a good video man. The Asgardian cast has so much potential to them, and they're constantly mistreated or ignored. An Asgard adventure comic line would be nice. Or at least it would have been 20 years ago.

I’m glad you liked it, Fernando. I agree an Asgard comic would have been great. Maybe they could bring back the Tales of Asgard section, but make sure it’s focused on the other gods? Probably not going to happen any time soon though.

@ThorTalk probably not bro. 🤷‍♂️ they literally made up two new valkyries like they don't have an entire recurring cast they could be working with. Ah well.

I always wondered why Tyr was so underutilized in Marvel. Nice to see him actually getting some love

One of the 3 "character casualties" of the Matt Fraction run and/or the Fear Itself event, the other 2 being Baldur and Odin. They have yet to recover from the damage done to them...

Agreed, Kieron Gillen was really the first writer to try to do something with Tyr and then Fraction killed him off for no reason.

Jason Aaron sadly destroyed ODIN as a Marvel character & Donnie Cates finished him off. The AllFather ODIN should be at his Silver Age power levels.

In Norse mythology Tyr felt bad about the binding of Fenrir do to the fact Tyr was the one who raised him after the gods took Hel, Jormungandr and Fenrir from there mother Angrboda, but Marvel had to change it some how to bring it to modern times for people to understand easily, And Tyr gladly put his hand in Fenrir's mouth do to the gods lying to him. Glad to see another video from you again

Marvel certainly makes many changes to the source material, but I don’t think there’s anything in the original myth to suggest that Tyr felt bad about binding Fenrir. The Prose Edda does say that Tyr was the only god not laughing at Fenrir being bound, but this is because he lost a hand rather than some pity for the wolf: “Then all laughed except Týr: he lost his hand”. This is reinforced by the fact that in Lokesanna, when Loki mocks Tyr for losing his hand to Fenrir, Tyr counters by saying that while Tyr lost a hand, Loki lost a son so they both suffered loss. Tyr does not count the wolf’s binding as his own loss, but as Loki’s and instead counts his hand as his loss. He was the one who fed Fenrir, but the reason for it is because he was the only one brave enough to do so. This seems to be emphasizing his courage rather than a tragic friendship. Modern retellings have been more sympathetic towards Fenrir and his siblings, but I don’t think Vikings were wringing their hands over the mistreatment of monsters said to bring about the end of the world. Again, there’s a mountain of differences between Myth and Marvel, but I don’t think Fenrir was meant to be a sympathetic character. Also glad to be back with another video

Late reply, but I have a question for thortalk. How do you feel about in recent years about Fenrir being portrayed as more sympathetic rather then straight up evil. In the original norse I can tell from reading it he's not really suppose to be sympathetic but I can definitely understand why some would see it or interpret it that way especially because prior at least in the original poems besides being stated to grow stronger and more dangerous he didn't really do anything wrong yet. Not to say the gods were entirely in the wrong but maybe in acting upon the future they have set it in stone from that moment on. As for other portrayals in recent media I do find it to be fascinating since even in books that portrayed the norse gods as good their decision to bind the wolf is treated as grey and I have even seen one story that had tyr be sorry for binding Fenrir in the first place. What do you think?

I never gave much importance to the Marvel books and I always thought that Tyr was misused by both Marvel and DC, so this one made me interested, the passage you narrated brought a lot of personality and emotion to the Asgardians. I hope that more characters, from Thor and other cores, receive the same treatment.

Odin’s cool and all, but I’ve always been partial to Hárbarðr. Grímnir is also up there for me and that other guy Hávi

@@benparrish672 Yes, Hárbarðr (Graybeard), Grímnir (Hooded One), and Hávi (High One) are all names that Odin uses. He loves wandering around in a wide brimmed hat and cloak whilst using various names. A little mythology joke ;) Also I’m glad that you like my channel and the god Thor as well as Odin

Is loki his father farther in marvel or is he his “father”
@ThorTalk
@ThorTalk Год назад
He’s been called his father a couple times and Loki even referred to Fenris’ offspring as his own grandchildren, but Marvel hasn’t gone into it too much. Everyone just goes with it so he’s Fenris’ biological father until Marvel decides to say otherwise

I look forward to more of your content. Personally I would really enjoy watching your perspective on the Thor animated films and Live Action movies. Also My theory is that the dwarves made the vine out of Adamantine. A metal used by the Olympians in the Marvel Universe.
