@thedondroidGD
@thedondroidGD 5 лет назад
@@wagnar I do not deny Hemsworth's acting ability. His comedic timing is impeccable... But when you take two of the darkest storylines in the Marvel Universe, smash them together and make them a goofy, slapstick comedy? Planet Hulk and Ragnarok are not the right platform for the childish antics that were portrayed. The jokes were simply over-done. They went WAY out of their way for a laugh. And to top it all off, the characters of Thor, Hulk, Valkyrie, Korg, Executioner, etc. were NEVER meant to be portrayed as idiot-clowns. Falling off the ramp cause she's so drunk... then later, Thor... THOR, for cri'sakes... criticizes her about HER drinking?!?!?!? That is simply asinine. And "baby Hulk" was a complete disappointment. It could have been one of the greatest Marvel Films to ever be released... but someone allowed Taika Waititi to direct a comedy, and it is now the worst possible Marvel imagery ever to see the light of day.

Thor wasn't a goofball in Ragnarok. That was his character development. He let go of his ego and became a chill dude and ditching his god superiority persona made him go down to earth and over the years of interaction with Avengers, he started to adopt more human like character traits into his personality. I'd say they did a fantastic job. Before Ragnarok no one knew about the places he visited since Age of Ultron and the experiences he had over time and also, it was more of a journey of self-discovery for him. He learned to let go of things, accept defeat, seek help from allies and it's okay to be weak at times. All this made him the benevolent King and the powerhouse big gun we all wanted him to become. Infinity war added more depth to his character where he actually cries for his people that Thanos slaughtered and swore to kill him but wasn't blinded by revenge, it was more of a controlled rage which pushed him forward, strengthening his will, he calmly waited for his moment to get Thanos and he did. If it was part 1 Thor, he would've gone berserk with revenge clouding his mind and probably end up dead by getting his ass whooped by Thanos. As a viewer, I started to feel for the character.

There are two different Thors in the MCU basically, the Pre and Post Ragnarok. The latter's the one we all rave about and the former is the one we all wish to forget, eventhough I have no problem at all with his shakesperean gibberish bcs that's just fitting to his background. Plus I really wish he'd kept his long hair even after he changed his persona in Ragnarok bcs I just never got into his short hair look, that's the only good thing about Pre Ragnarok Thor imo lol

Danerito I'd rewatch it if I could get over the terrible character designs and the irritating tone set throughout the movie. To be completely honest I'm glad Joss Whedon is no longer directing for Marvel, everybody loves the first avengers because the whole selling point of the movie was bringing everybody together for the first time, a child could have directed the movie and everybody would have loved it all the same, AOU didn't have that selling point and it did show, people ripped it apart for being the mess that it was. Both movies pale in comparison to Infinity War, or even Civil War for that matter
@rhetiq9989
@rhetiq9989 6 лет назад
MiniMoshion It took a lot more to make Avengers than you know. Joss knew how to balance out all the different characters and make their interactions interesting, wasn’t just the idea of bringing them together for the first time. The movie structure was crafted so well which made the film felt really organized. It takes more than a child to make Avengers. If he didn’t manage all that it could’ve easily turned out like JL for all we know. After that tho I’ve no idea what happened to Joss, what with AoU and JL he really went downhill

I think that's one area where Marvel listened to the fans. The music in their first movies was kinda generic. People talked about it, youtube videos were made about it, and then the music in the movies got better. I can only imagine what they would be like if Marvel had started with good liet motif's from the very beginning. The emotional power of each hero's theme weaving thru the current movies built up from all the times they were used in prior movies. I sure hope marvel doesn't step off the same cliff star wars leapt off of.

Wonderfully said. Thor ragnarok was the first time where Thor completely outshined Loki. This was also the point which made him truly understandable and relatable. It showed how much he has changed due to his experiences in Midgard/earth and with the avengers. It humanised him in such a believable way that he became very easy to love. Infinity war only expanded that love for him. Seeing how he’s trying smile through his pain. Specially in That conversation with rocket where Thor talks about his losses, it really hits like a hammer(no pun intended). That scene was the most emotional one for me. Because that is the first time you realise how much pain Thor is really enduring and how he’s still trying to hide it behind laughs. How he was hiding it behind laughs even in ragnarok. This transformation of Thor was beautifully done. That made him my favourite MCU character. He completely outshines everyone in infinity war. And he’s the person that I’m rooting for the most in the ‘end game’.

Subvert expectations in the most miserable ways, kind of like Luke. One thing is to show for the relatable aspect a los point in that character that then throttles said character to where he was and adds improving overall and doing further progression. That's one thing and very different from retconing everything meaningful and significant progression out of the Bifröst Bridge.

I hope not as I like the guardians but with cast kicking off about gunns firing they might not even return for the roles anyway so maybe it would be easier for them?

Great explanation for Thor's sudden mood shift in Ragnarok being a mechanism to hide his grief. Makes perfect sense when you consider how he mostly keeps this attitude in Infinity War but cracks a bit. Understandably, as he has lost more than anyone else in the MCU and has nothing left but vengeance. I love that he's now not only a fan favourite, but genuinely one of the most interesting and well written characters of the MCU.

Thor had a complete mental breakdown. I mean who the hell wouldn't? Before IW he lost his mother, then father, then his home planet and then in IW he lost Heimdall, Loki and half of his people, he lost his eye too. And then when he thought he was finally able to beat Thanos he didn't which caused half of Earth to just be gone. He probably thought that it was his fault and when he got the chance to redeem himself turns out it was a lost cause.

A lot of people were against Thor becoming more comedic, but for me it wasn't a problem because I love Chris Hemsworth's comedic timing and I've never been a fan of Thor from the comics. Always found him too boring. But in the films, Chris Hemsworth makes the character so charming and likeable. I guess you could say I'm a bigger fan of Chris than Thor. And in Infinity War, they managed to retain that humour whilst showing his pain and anger and making him badass. He is acting cocky to hide his loss. Loved it.

Not disagreeing, but elaborating in why Spidey's is also sad. First, He's the only one who says things like "I don't want to go" almost crying. It reminds us that every other character is a hero, who has taken on great responsibility at great risk, but Peter is just a kid who gets scared when things suddenly became too real. Second: Because of when he says "I'm sorry" He knows there is nothing he can do about it and has resigned himself to his death, and as his last words, he apologizes. He doesn't apologize to Stark for failing. He apologizes because Stark, earlier in the film, had lectured him on thinking about what it would mean to Stark if he had Peter's death on his conscience. He is apologizing to Stark for the guilt he knows Tony is going to be suffering from after he is gone.

I really liked Thor in Ragnarok and Infinity War, especially infinity war, because your right, he's the Thor from Ragnarok, but he's seen and experienced some real and profound tragedy and is not in a happy state of mind. he tries to use humor to hide how he is feeling from Groot and Rocket, but doing so winds up almost break down and he tears up, and starts almost crying. he is going through grief and sort of trying to avoid it, and it's not working, he's not able to escape his own grief. it's a great arc.
@jroldan9858
@jroldan9858 5 лет назад
I totally agree with you - and I'm surprised that not so many acknowledge the brilliant performance by Hemsworth as portraying this post-Ragnarok Thor who is undergoing immense grief, even if only for a momentary scene! I've seen this movie three times now with friends (and I'm tempted to to just watch it again on my own) but I was always captivated and deeply moved by how Hemsworth delivers those lines, especially when talking to Rocket or the Guardians (eg. "no, no...revenge is a very powerful motivator..." yet his voice slightly quivers while saying it, and of course "...what more can I lose...") The irony between what he says and what is felt (by reading his eyes, and listening to tone of voice) is near heartbreaking. You and Browntable are totally right that Thor is hiding a profound sadness, and yet he knows that he has to stop Thanos somehow (having experienced the threat first-hand), but pair that with his new wit and humour (eg. banter with the Guardians, or those forced "smiles") and you have something of deep dramatic irony. Not to mention that his journey to get Stormbreaker and revenge on Thanos seem like ways to cope with that grief - and are all in keeping with his personality since Thor 1 though is more developed now - his is a great arc indeed!
@genovaz
@genovaz 5 лет назад
There's a bit of fringe brilliance in the timing of the change too because of when we see this new Thor relative to what he got with the old Thor. Thor is 1500 years old which is unfathomably long by human standards and he's been the golden child of Asgard for all that time. Then between Thor 1, Avengers, and Dark World he realizes there is so much he doesn't know about anything - about being a warrior, a king, and a man - then loses his mother and brother in the blink of an eye. You can't really blame him from running away from the throne of Asgard to escape his grief to Earth where he still feels mighty only to be confronted with the the impending doom of his people in Avengers 2. The Thor we get at the beginning of Ragnarok is somebody who is on a quest to save his people after recently being shown that he just may be a lot less significant than he thought he was - before everything he knows and loves is ripped from him again. When Thor is talking to Rocket, he's lost his status as the incumbent badass of the 9 realms, his hammer, his brother twice, both his parents, possibly his first love, his first home, his best friends, half the people he'd sworn his life to protect, and was facing the knowledge that his new home and his new friends were in imminent danger, and all within the timespan of 7-8 years, which might seem like a while to us because our lifespans are

Excellent video essay. I always felt like Thor was super underutilized until Ragnarok. People gripe about the comedy and the bathos. And while I can see that for the latter bit, I actually enjoyed the comedy as a fan of Taika Waitti. Plus, it gave Thor an identity. The Shakespearian element just came off as really forced and unrelatable. Having a more bro Thor actually works really well for I always saw Thor as the "jock" warrior of the Avengers. And really with Infinity War, I can further appreciate Ragnarok for his comedy/ jovial mindset can be seen as a way to hide how he truly feels. I mean it was bad enough that his father was an odious individual, but he has nobody. He is all alone, outside a few surviving Asgardians. And thus, has to pick himself up and reforge himself. Hence, the Axe. So yeah, I'm hopeful we get another Thor movie, perhaps with the Guardians, like Rocket and Groot? Seriously, those three are amazing together.

Neil exactly. Also, Thor: Ragnarök was probably one of the best movies I've ever watched as an Australian. It just got into our zeitgeist perfectly. It's very rare that you hear a Kiwi accent in a hollywood blockbuster, even rarer that an Aussie actor will be allowed to drop their accent in; yet both Cate and Chris were able to weave it into their asgardian accent and it was glorious. Not to mention other things like the casting, Aussie references hidden in planet names on spaceship computers (planets named after Ford and Holden cars). I even took my most anti-american, marvel-hating, cinema-phobic, rural relatives to see it and they loved it. I think part of the criticism comes from how Americans and other nationalities weren't able to appreciate some parts of the more NZ/Aussie humor where it came up (Skurge saying "Tex-Arse" gave me flashbacks). It was a slightly different sense of humor to the humor used in the other marvel films. In my opinion it was better; but that's just an opinion. The humor in most marvel films, barring a handful of others, feels kind of forced to me. But in Ragnarök; it was used to move the story forward. I think it also did a pretty good job with the drama where it was necessary; the people criticizing the film kept saying it detracted from heartbreaking moments; but there were no jokes when (Spoilers for those who haven't seen the film) When Odin died, or when Loki basically told Thor to die in the arena because he bet money against him, or when Hela killed nearly everyone in Asgard, and when the survivors of her wrath, such as Idris, were trying to find a way out. Also with Banner's struggle with Hulk. So I don't get how humor detracted from those scenes where it wasn't even used. It's not like it lingered into the other scenes.

Eduardo Murúa do you read at all? Why do you think Marvel used Loki in the Avengers and not some generic world conquering villain? He pits the characters against one another and they overcome and their characters evolve in more way than just muscle. Why do you think Whedon was so willing to like a tweet on how bad Steppenwolf was as a villain? He could create enough conflict between the heroes foe them to forge a strong unity. He tried plugging in some conflict between Aqua Man and Cyborg, but it was weak compared to how Loki maneuvered the Avengers to implode on the SHIELD carrier. The quality of a villain is predicated on his ability to advance a hero in more ways that just his superpowers. You might want take some literary classes in basic English to grasp the concept of story telling If you are feeling genuinely offended with this concept, my apologies. You can delete the link from your history if you fear my comment might infect someone you know

Eduardo Murúa the villain is arguable a cornerstone of how a hero is developed. Other films, the load is shared (Iron Man as a mentor to Peter Parker). A trickster has a lot of versatility especially one like Loki. His being a God and demonstrating the ability to get into your head, has its uses. Especially for an ensemble film like the Avenger. Why else would Marvel buck convention and use him twice? Perhaps you misinterpreted my intent. But on topic, I agree with the assessment of The Dark World. It was Loki’s film and it’s value in the MCU, to me, was augmented with Infinity War. Without The Dark World, Loki’s character arc is much more relevant. But his mischief and mystery diminished un Rag Iraq, signifying that he really isn’t a villain.

Im a huge fan of Thor since the beginning. I kinda like the Shakespeare tone in the first movie, specially thor's banishment scene and thank God Taika balanced the character very well.

Thor is *now* a fan favorite? I honestly believe that more ppl appreciated him before this, mostly fans of the comics who truly understood what he was capable of. I actually liked that they simply nerfed him, bc in the comics he was *completely* depowered when Odin sent him to Earth, so it still fell in line with what we expected. It gave us a glimpse of his humanity, without the whole erasing his memory of who he was. I mean, it would've still made for an interesting movie to see Thor navigate the earth realm as a human and scientist, under his moniker Donald Blake, especially bc Thor is actually way more intelligent than the movies make him out to be. But I also liked the take of him that Marvel took, which was more of a Viking getting to know the modern world, rather than some farfetched medical student. I think we sensed where Marvel was going. I was patient, and was rewarded with Ragnarok and A:IW. But those glimpses of his personality and power still peeked through in his 1st appearances. And I feel like those who didn't pay attention were too easily distracted by Ironman's overbearing charisma (which I think is more RDJ than Tony Stark), and Hulk's story arc. I think if anyone was boring for me, it was Captain America. But that Thor power upgrade in Ragnarok filled my heart up so much, bc for years I've been telling ppl that he is in fact the strongest Avenger, and Hulk would finally meet his match (don't argue with me on this, Stan Lee himself confirmed Thor is better). I also knowingly nodded and smiled at friends who saw Thor in all his glory during Wakanda's battle. I mean, there is so much love for Thor and I'm so glad ppl are finally get to see what some of us already knew. My heart is aglow, and woop woop, he's single now. F**k you, Jane and your stupid Nobel Prize!! Sorry lost my composure there.....yay Thor! Excelsior!!

Well said. Thor was never quite boring to me, but he was kind of stuck in a rut. The first Thor was good, and The Avengers was really good, but then in Dark World and Age of Ultron, Thor was just there. He was almost a supporting character in his own movie. But Ragnarok brought Thor back in a big way.

Filip Gasic in a sense I agree with that. He is kinda useless to the plot, regardless of his “Thanos moment”. But his character arc and motivation has progressed really well (as well as his costume changes...his first outfit was so goofy looking) He went from an idealistic, naive soldier to a hardened, weathered, disgraced warrior.

My only major criticism of Ragnarok is the Asgard-Hela part of the story. Despite her enormous potential, Hela turns out to be more of just a standard marvel villain. Killing the warriors three was just pointless, they didn’t put up much of a fight, it doesn’t really affect the main story and they’re not even mentioned again, even by Thor, who’s supposed to be one of their closest friends. The people of Asgard come off more as helpless lemmings than actual people. They have no will, no intention to fight. Whereas there was the opportunity to give the asguardians a wakanda-like sense of pride in their home, having a massive battle against Hela’s minions, they pretty much just stand there on the bridge helplessly. And instead of trying to live up to his father, becoming a leader, giving his people hope, Thor just waves at them awkwardly, then says Earth it is. Ragnarok is still a solid movie, but I really think that both Hela, Thor’s place as king and the death of Asgard were massive wasted opportunities.
@butchersblade7068

I completely agree. The warriors three were wasted, and Odin's death didn't feel like a big deal.

The things that somehow bothered me the most in both Ragnarok and IW are : - How the hell would the Wakanda, mere mortals, were able to put up much more of a fight than Asgardians, who are literal Gods !? - And even after that, how the heck did I feel that real life soldiers would put up even a better fight than the Wakanda !?

Lol. But srsly, the Wakanda have all their tech at their disposal, and instead of having all those Aircraft and anti-tank-and-flesh weapon shooting at their adversaries, they chose to engage them, which are around 1.5 to 2 times their sides, in melee combat !?
