I had never seen the Sad Keanu meme until now and I loved John Wick without it. I feel like memes are turning into inside jokes (because I don't find most of them funny until others explain them to me) and as long as they are used in ways that don't leave people who don't know them behind, I have no problem with their influence. Sometimes I find their influence on actors enjoyable (Sam Jackson) and sometimes it gets tiring and boring (Liam Neeson). I just depends on the meme.

LOVED this video!! 👏 I’m fascinated by memes as a form of communication/self expression/group expression. I really appreciated your argument that memes have transformed Hollywood. I liked your examples of X-3 and 🐍🐍 on a Plane because I worked at a movie theater back when both of those movies came out, and I distinctly remember the hype and key meme-ified moments from each film. It’s also interesting to think about celebrities that have maintained relevancy because of (or despite?) virally popular memes. Anyway, thanks for making this video. It was really cool and gave me something neat to think about. ✌️

I think it’s gonna lead to probably manipulation of the meme market. Companies are just going to inorganically prop up memes that either hype up a brand/actor and use that fabricated popularity to cash in at the box office.

Fernando Aquino that's the power of meme culture though. It only works if it's totally organic, and Internet people can smell corporate bullshit a mile off. It'd be a risky strategy for a corporation or brand to try, cause if internet nerds find the attempt lame, they'll make a meme out of how lame that brands attempt to make a legit meme was, thus making the brand into the joke. 5:00 this really resonates with me as having a dad who grew up with John Wayne films. Like if you were going to the movies back then it wasn’t, “we’re going to see Horse Soldiers or True Grit” it was “we’re going to see the new John Wayne movie” because most actors of the time, Wayne especially, played literally the same character in every film and it might as well have been a franchise. We can see the same affect with the last 10-15 years of Adam Sandler films

Memes are not a creation of the internet. Actors images have been manufactured since at least Shakespeare. The only thing new under the sun is the (digital) paper trail making these trends and relationships more obvious.

what? you missed out the biggest difference: the extreme ease of transmission and dissemination. with the internet and social media, a meme can reach literal billions in hours. within that time, hundreds of different "takes" on a viral image would also surface, each one vying for attention and approval in an almost perfect competition. the first meme was not created during the age of the internet; but the internet accelerated the apotheosis of meme culture.

It might even get to a point one day where studios will saturate their movies with meme references in an attempt to "hello fellow kids" their way to the big bucks, but this would circle back and make these kind of references in movies highly undesirable. Okay, so this was a feeling I had in the back of my head for years already.. like "man, that role was made for this actor". John Wick was one of those movies, as well as Nick Fury in the MCU. Probably the guy from Venom as well, as well as Chris Pratt in Jurassic Park/World. You can't straight up think about another actor for those roles, probably because the memes has set us up in expecting that those people had that perfect personality and the movie was shaped into that. @@timy9197 I don't subscribe to the tired "The Left vs The Right" paradigm. It's a far too simplistic description of the spectrum of political ideologies. "The Left" as you put it, doesn't exist. There is no ominous entity that's acts in unison. It's a lazy description that's been fed to us inorder to strengthen the idea of "The Other". My use of "Far Right" however, is a useful label. As it describes a small group of people with easily identifiable shared characteristics and motives. My point is there is no shared ideology amongst "The Left" or "The Right". I know for a fact that I definitely don't agree with everyone of the so called Left, and I know for a fact that your standard conservative or libertarian has almost no shared ideology with the Far Right.

The philosophy of Gundam Wing. After watching as a kid in the 90's and now rewatching it; it went fairly deep into war and peace. It addressed the politics and public opinion but more importantly it delved into the philosophy of the soldiers fighting. But i think the mobile dolls aspect of the show is especially relatable to todays use of drones.

Man, Brazilian memes are the full meal banquet to US's sides. A recent youtube ad started with a young woman saying "Hi, my name is Betina and I made 1.2 million before 22". You can now look up the hundreds of videos, images, audios, comic strips, people derived from Betina in unbelievably creative ways ^^
