How Menswear is Changing 

I’m a man and I wanna dress more interesting ways without putting on a skirt or something. It feels boring , so I’m excited for men’s wear to take it up a notch. I definitely can shop in the women’s section and find some cool stuff though. So a little is on me but I wish men’s had the same options and variety as women’s . So in time I hope things change

as a girl into fashion (moreso women’s because i identify with it more) i adore your channel although I may not be the target audience. it’s nice to see recurring themes in men’s wear and taking bits and pieces of them. I’ve been using the kibbe body type and color season theory to define the most “flattering” way for me to dress, and playing around with it. that tends to be how female fashion channels judge how well a woman’s outfit is styled, and for men it’s a completely different ball field to me. I usually love taking from more “masculine” silhouettes like large leather jackets contrasted with mini dresses or outfits “in my lines,” it gives a nice contrasting and edgy look. i also don’t feel like i’m trying too hard to appear feminine or masculine in that manner, bc it feels as if it looks offputting if i try 100% one or the other seeing as I also have a masculine face. more like i’m wearing a costume and it’s not authentic to me.

I think there’s a place for everything in fashion, but i personally don’t like this trend of menswear trying so hard to be androgynous, as i don’t feel like it’s authentic at all If you happen to be a man who likes womenswear thats cool and vice versa But just putting "feminine" colors, silhouettes, and skirts on guys feels kinda cheap to me (like trying to cash in on current gender discussion) I lean towards the idea of androgyny in fashion being absolutely neutral, almost separate to traditional mens/womenswear instead of trying to homogenize both In my opinion menswear should start to explore masculinity in away that is more natural, take the silhouette if some traditional menswear from other cultures for example: Men wear skirt like garments in so many cultures, which could be seen by western society as feminine, but that’s the thing, it’s not! Showing skin is something many masculine cultures do, just not the same way women do, why not explore those avenues (which also improves true inclusion?) Im not saying that we shouldn’t experiment with mixing things up, but if you would actually explore menswear in history, you would find how broad the menswear spectrum goes! I feel like there’s a reason why men wear different clothes to women and vice versa, some silhouettes are just more flattering for certain bodytypes But the skirt of a man and the skirt of a woman are different (if you want to choose the other that’s absolutely fine, but don’t erase the "male skirt" just to make fashion more androgynous) A lot of menswear history and culture would be lost, if the industry decides to just inject womenswear into menswear Have a nice day everyone 👍🏼

My wife chuckles at how I dress too young for my age which I suppose I do. I'm using pink as a legit color... for me that's a change. The older I get the more I abandon a uniform and just dress what I feel.

like you mentioned, many young men have turned to influencers like andrew tate almost as a beacon of safety from having to question whether their identity as a male is *really* the centerpiece of who they are as a person. at the same time, young men interested in fashion wish to explore their masculinity and male identity while still identifying as male. i hope that through the changes in the idea of masculinity, more men can see their identity as something freeing rather than restrictive. most men have been raised with a singular idea of what it means to be a man and are only now being introduced to the idea that being a man can be interpreted in many different ways. I will be interested to see what generation will be raised with this more fluid version of masculinity, and what will they take from that to interpret in their clothing.

I think I'm always underwhelmed by these conversations since, in the western world, women's fashion has been influenced by menswear for so long that a lot of so called 'androgyny' looks like basic, normal clothing (a tee, pants) on someone who looks "more androgynous." Skirts are just the last hold out of that, so it seems like it should have caught on. I think the real question is whether or not people (but particularly men) will ever be open to dressing in a way that's more vulnerable to interpretation to the viewer (i.e. ornate/figure flattering) than for just utility. The items that combines both (like those shorts with a ruffle) seem like it should have easily caught on, but considering a lot of the major shifts in men's fashion have been based around utility (streetwear, gorpcore, techwear) while the ones in women's have been based on aesthetics (dark academeia, cottagecore, barbiecore,) I don't think we're headed in that direction yet. Any further changes won't be coming from runways, since the designers have just done their jobs in showing us the possibilities and capitalizing on what's marketable, and further progress requires we buy into those ideas; it feels like it's not a new conversation since we're just now considering things brought up decades ago. A new way of gender fluid or androgynous dressing is a reach when we're just now humoring the societal shifts that even make it a possibility.

The problem with for example the yellowish crop top look from Acne is that that is not androgynous, putting men in womens pieces is not androgynous. It's about exploring what you can do with clothing without taking away from the persons "manliness" so to speak, how much skin can you show without it being too feminine. I don't like the idea of putting a man in a skirt and being like oh wow androgyny how great. And its not because the skirt was traditionally a womenswear piece. You have to somewhat navigate around what is considered manly and feminine while pushing the boundaries ever so slightly more and more. Not just put men into skirts. To me personally it just looks odd and it really does not do a good job in bringing androgyny to the straight man.

For brands just allowing men to wear women's clothes these days is just LAZY! We need the creative design to adapt to gender fluidity

As a non binary person with a boys body I was never interested in the “showing skin” “feminine” way of androgyny dressing. Unfortunately I guess it’s a more explicit way to create a statement for your own sexuality visually very quickly. But still I really enjoy wearing womenswear because that gives me joy. I always think about how would a skirt be designed if it was intended for the male body. How can we treat traditionally feminine items like skirts or dresses just another clothing option for everyone? And I think it would be awesome if the fashion industry dive in a bit more into this idea that you are highlighting in your video and simply treat a design as a design instead of whether it belongs on a man or a woman.

I keep watching videos about high fashion. And I always leave the video with the opinion that it all looks terrible, regardless of whatever meaning might or might not be behind it. If it looks bad it looks bad, there is no amount of explanation that will change that.

It would be interesting to interview people who don’t conform to typical expressions of gender and what they seek out of their clothing. Get to know their philosophy or how they work through putting an outfit together.

I and probably many other people like to go back and review main aspects and cool fashions after finishing watching. By ending so abruptly, RU-vid spits out the next video or ad, which makes reviewing and rewinding uncomfortable. Maybe you could look into creating an end card with own recommendations for ~10secs?

Very interesting take! I think you should look into trans men and women who are comfortable with expressing feminity/masculinity in their styles post transition. It shows that yes, while wearing something that aligns with societies expectations of your gender can make one feel euphoric at times, the confidence and stability in ones own identity can make it so that one stops caring about what society dictates. It could maybe make you think of new perspectives on this topic. Waiting on your next video

On the topic of what some brands understand as feminine fashion, as a not so thin non-binary person, I gotta say that all the cropping and exposed chests - while defo having a place in fashion - aren't suitable for many fashion consumers, be it due to their body issues and/or religion, etc. I generally prefer the 1980s and 1990s oversize take on womenswear by Japanese brands.

Life is too short to worry about negative opinions or to wait for change in the male fashion industry and social acceptance. Men's Ready 2 wear and men's mass retail fashion is always going to take the conservative safe route. So, best to simply goto the women's section or order from some niche manufacturers to incorporate feminine clothes into your outfit of the day.

gender is pretty darn impossiible to successfully pursue as a design goal. It's fun to have clothes that are outwardly gender declarations, Random Identities. The good stuff comes from clothing that stimulates your gender experience behind the folds. How it lays on you. How it moves, Rick Owens and some Margiela . Not to mislead but the work that touches in a personal way is way more exciting

I can do a lot better than them in making an androgynous fashion sense in my opinion. I luv to mix aspects of masculine and feminine fashion together to craft a unique and powerful look.

love more feminine fashion, mostly cos I'm also very lefty as you hahah, and am fascinated by stereotypes/ norms and taboos and breaking it. Just can't find much in stores, but that also comes with the issue of materialchoices and I prefer not to buy synthetic and even tho, I'm not afraid to shop in woman's section, it's just so hard to find something really interesting and not made from polyester in the same time. So now I'm battling with my fear of failure and getting courage to start sewing my own stuff

I feel this video so much. I have a very masculine build and feel more or less excluded from the androgynous fashion world. The ideal here is still extremely thin, extremely tall and generally fine and feminine, not masculine and coarse. I think that many men are like me and we can only watch the current fashion world, every inspiration cannot be implemented in everyday life because the clothing was not designed for our bodies, even if we really like it and would like to wear it . I really wish that there could be more tall and wide bodies in fashion and that cuts would become more variable.

Women's clothing has been becoming more and more masculine over the last century, to the point where there are women who never wear dresses. But as clothing casualised, it's become more clear how boring men's clothing is. I think androgyny will be the ultimate result.

I don't think menswear is changing. Men will continue to wear menswear and not adjust it to any new fashion vision. Menswear will always be menswear. The only people who will adopt androgyny are the androgynous. So I don't think there is much change to be had with menswear. Designers have sent men in dresses down runways for decades, it hasn't really done anything to what normal people wear.

I prefer a naturist lifestyle.
