Meshuggah did a song called Don't Speak on their rather obscure compilation album Rare Trax in 2001, where they switch back and forth between different measures of tuplets and regular 8th notes, although the switches are pretty straightforward and isolated to individual bars.

I appreaciate what they attempted in TVSOR but I'm glad they went back to their more standard recording method because it feels more Meshuggah. This new album just sounds so precise like master surgeons effortlessly making incisions whereas TVSOR sounded more chaotic and out of control.

Although not technically "in the same riff", another time I can think of that Meshuggah changed subdivisions within the same song is in future breed machine. They play a quarter note triplet + release riff at 4:30, and then at 4:39 they play a VERY similar but distinctly different dotted eighth pattern utilizing the same phrase structure. One of the most epic meshuggah moments in my opinion. The difference between the two riffs is so small yet so big at the same time. Amazing video Yogev!

I just got done watching his video on Future Breed Machine and he addresses this! It’s one of my favorite Meshuggah moments, too. It’s so imposing and just keeps crushing you. It’s hard to beat the guitar tone off that album.

I really do love this album a lot. Really straight to the point and so “Meshuggah” . Feels like they trimmed a lot of fat on this one yet still expanding with wilder rhythms. It’s grabbing me as much C33, DEI and nothing did

Just for reference: the triplet sections last 2, 4, 6, 8, 4, 12 beats respectively. Very very nice linear progression with the 4 thrown in to mix things up instead of a 10. Also, the fact that these are all even-length and that A is even-length (6 beats) while B is odd-length (3 beats) leaves that extra beat at the end, after the last version of C. Such a nice construction all together.

The formula of the last riff where they used triplets is very similar to the formula they had used in Clockworks, isn't it? 🤔 Well, that's maybe why I like these two riffs. Good job, Meshuggah!
@Gojira135
@Gojira135 2 года назад
well in clockworks, its technically also triplets, but you can still count it as like 2 sixteenths notes (cause ,takin out the drums, the guitar usually play only the first note of it), where in this one they kinda mess them up and sometimes only play like the middle or the last note of it, so it kinda force you to count it as triplets. So yeah its a similar formula but even more complex, adding the fact that the triplets part change every time
@Meurth
@Meurth 2 года назад
@@Gojira135 You may be underestimating their picking skills, for example they have a guitar lesson video on youtube where Marten explains the main riff of Pravus is more complicated than it sounds, and he said he doesn't know why he would play it like that when no one can hear the difference anyway, but he does. The picking in Bleed is insanely fast as well ofc
@supermot34
@supermot34 2 года назад
@@Meurth It's funny he said that because you can DEFINITELY hear the difference in that Pravus, he was just being modest. He's talking about the pull offs in the riff, which are very audible.

@Max_Payn3 2 года назад
@@Meurth I love this quote from Marten. The humility and self awareness , yet little does he know the 10s of thousands of Meshuggah fans analyzing every single nuance and complexity of their writing
@creker1
@creker1 2 года назад
It does look similar in a way that it employs similar writing technique. One constant static part that ends with different things a couple of times. The difference in playing though is huge. Clockworks is easy stuff. It's very linear and constant. The only tricky part is to remember all the endings and stretch your fingers enough to play them properly. I am that thirst, on the other hand, is much more complex rhythmically. This is the first album from shuga where I HAD to read notes and remember all their durations. Usually I remember riffs enough that I can simply learn where my fingers should be and that's it. Not the case here.
