How Mike Piazza Ended Up In New York

Mike Piazza went down as one of the best late round draft picks after being drafted in the 62nd round by the Dodgers with the help of Tommy Lasorda. But after 5 great seasons in Los Angeles, he was surprisingly traded to the Florida Marlins before being traded to the New York Mets within the span of a week. In New York, he became a fan favorite, appearing in commercials and TV shows while having his most iconic moments such as his feud with Roger Clemens, the 2000 World Series, and his home run after 9/11.

I grow up in south central Los Angeles Mike Piazza was my favorite baseball player. He inspired me to play baseball and going to church. And having a personal relationship with Jesus keep me away from gangs and drugs during the 90's. The Dodgers fans in Los Angeles was very upset about Mike being traded. And most of as kid's. Had no idea what was really going on at that time. And why it was happening until years later. When we found out that Fox Network made the trade after buying the team. And didn't want to pay him for what he was asking but they should have. And the Dodgers general manager was not even aware of the trade. He was still working on a deal for Mike to stay with the Dodgers. Which made many Dodgers fans even more upset about the trade after finding out the details years later. But even though it was sad to see him leave the Dodgers. But as they say we all have a purpose. And everything happens for a reason. And now looking back many years later. Mike had a purpose to end up in New York with the Mets. To help the country get back to being normal after 911 happened.

As a Dodger fan, I really love Mike Piazza so much even though he became a Hall of Famer as a Met. It’s a shame and hurts to me that the Dodger management decided to trade him rather than he sign a contract extension with the Dodgers.

I’m curious what the Braves dugout looked like after losing that game on Sept. 21, 2001. I grew up a huge Braves fan and watched that game and I wasn’t mad. I was pretty emotional actually and happy the Mets got the win and that city had something to cheer. I’d like to think that night the Braves players maybe clapped or possibly stuck around for autographs or something.

Funny cuz he played in 3 heavy Italian influenced cities. He felt home everywhere. My favorite catcher and top 3 fav players ever

Great hitter and all the substances he used helped beef up his power numbers. Still the all time leader of home runs hit as a catcher.

NYC, but what are the other two Italian influence cities. Certainly not LA, Miami, San Diego or Oakland.

@@MikeCee7you’re looking at recent times. research the Mickey Mouse Mafia of LA and both the Colombo and Gambino families operated out of Miami as well. But I’m speaking more so with Mafia ties.

@@JazzyJeff910 if that is true, I’m no spring chicken, (I’m Early Gen X) but I didn’t know about the Italian influences of those two cities. I’m gonna safely say, hardly anyone under the age of 65, is going to know that Miami & LA were once mafia strong holds. - If this was a question on Family Feud of “Name the places with heavy Italian influences” I’m sure the top-5 would be NYC, New Jersey, Chicago, Boston, and maybe Philly. - You must be part of the early baby boomer generation, or may be the post-World War II generation(?) (Which of those born before 1945)

I remember the media and experts kept saying and was talked about a lot that Piazza needed to switch positions from catcher to 1st base some how. After he was traded he all that talking about switching positions was over and gone and he never switched.

As a kid these trades confused me so freaking much. Think it was the first time I really paid attention to player salaries.

The Dodgers thought he should play for free because they took a chance on him.

He was honestly better as a Dodger. He deserved to go in as a met, but he had way better numbers as a dodger.

Chase D'Arnaud owns a 1.000 batting average as a Boston Red Sox player as a result of one of these kinds of deals. Only briefly appearing for them.

I'm so happy the Dodgers current ownership is nothing like thr Fox era or the Frank McCunt era. This Dodgers team also had Pedro Martinez ffs

Los Angeles and Southern California was PISSED off! This, Raul Mondesi and Adrain Beltre trades were the worst for the Dodgers and set them back for decades until the new ownership group arrived which is what they have now a power house.

The Dodgers going 20 years without winning a playoff series, and giving away Pedro Martinez, Mike Piazza, Adrian Beltre, and Paul Konerko is exactly why I don't feel bad about the stacked roster we have now

Roids. Skinny kid bad 1st baseman comes back jacked. Acne on back. Not illegal Not even against MLB rules at the time. But he did what he needed to do. Like many MLBers in 90’s

Exactly I dunno why ppl put him in a pedestal in New York when the Dodgers got the best of him. I used to like him but I heard stories that he used to hate pitchers that didn’t speak English and he disliked dodgers Mexican fan base.
