How Modern Doctor Who Finally Embraced its Past

When Doctor Who returned in 2005, it didn't really acknowledge its long and storied history. However, this all changed with the Series 2 episode School Reunion, which brought back the popular 1970s companion Sarah Jane Smith. 14 years later, does this episode still hold up?

Bit more difficult with modern companions. Rose is trapped in a parallel world, Donna was mind wiped, Amy and Rory were captured by the Weeping Angels, Clara died, Bill became a puddle person. Only one who didn't get screwed over was Martha, although she happily has the most potential for a story revolving around her.

I love Toby's detail that *"The last time [the Doctor] saw Krilitane, they looked just like us except they had really long necks."* As a kid, I had some awareness that the show existed prior to 2005, and I always thought that the Krilitane were an old villain because of this hokey description. You can just imagine how daft they would have looked. Of course, the Krilitane aren't from the Classic show, but this description crosses the boundary between Old and New Who.

When Doctor Who returned in 2005, I thought it was a reboot and the BBC and Russell T. Davies were starting it all over again with Christopher Eccleston as The 1st Doctor and instead of The Doctor leaving Gallifrey aboard the TARDIS to explore the universe because he is bored, The Doctor is forced to wander through time and space when Gallifrey is destroyed in the Time War and The Daleks was to be revealed to be the race the Time Lords fought which led to Gallifrey's destruction. I later began to realize that it wasn't a reboot and it was a direct continuation of the classic series and the 1996 TV movie when Sarah Jane Smith and K9 appeared in "School Reunion".

Sladen said that when she first heard about them wanting her in an episode, she thought it would be for a brief walk-past, an inside joke, and she'd have refused because Sarah Jane deserved more than that. ps I like how something that's said in this ep becomes a plot point in a Sarah Jane Adventure; she repeats the line back, and adds "something a friend told me".

The SJA was essentially my introduction to Doctor Who. I knew about Doctor Who beforehand, however I had no idea that those series were both only a segment of the same universe or multiverse, until I watched the first crossover episode as a child. It is only a testament to RTD as a showrunner and creative lead. The Sarah Jane Adventures easily stands alone and possessed its own identity separate to Doctor Who. What saddens me is that Elizabeth Sladen wasn't in more epidodes.

Doctor: *"What is non-coding DNA?"* Milo: *"To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer's head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. The one thing this episode could've used to improve it would be to remove some of the jealousy angle between Rose and Sarah Jane. Of course, for both of them, I'd say it's not really jealousy but rather, them lashing out over their hangups about the Doctor leaving them behind. Rose has already been sent home once against her will, and looking at Sarah Jane, she realizes this is a pattern of the Doctor's. She convinced herself that he only did so at the Game Station because the situation was dire, but Sarah Jane's story was different and yet she was still left behind. It would've improved the episode if the show hadn't framed it as a jealous spat between two women, when in reality it was both of them being upset with him and taking it out on each other because that's safer and easier.

One thing about the Krillitane plan is that you can see the Doctor is tempted, and it falls to his companions (Sarah Jane) to remind him of why he shouldn't, continuing the theme of modern who where the companion saves the day as often as the Doctor (classic who from third Doctor onwards never did that) and giving that opportunity to the classic companion.

It’s because you’re reminded of the fact that they’re gone and the pain of losing them. Watching The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith gave me that pain, because it reminded me of how I’ll never see my Doctor in a new episode, potentially barring anniversary events like Day of the Doctor, then mixing with the pain of knowing the Elizabeth Sladen was taken from us and all the stories that could’ve been told had the universe not been so cruel. Apparently, we would’ve seen Ace again, as well. I can watch the beginning of the episode just fine, but the moment the Doctor meets Sarah Jane, the disk freaks out the earliest point it picks back up is at around the scene the Doctor is talking to Mr. Finch. @erinella

I didn't have the nostalgia of having watched Sarah when her episodes aired, but I did watch my Dad's DVDs before the reboot so I was giddy to see her and K9 come back. I particularly hoped they would mention the fact that he left her in Aberdeen and was really pleased when they did 😂 You're so right about this episode being harder to watch after the passing of Elizabeth Sladen. Her death was so sudden, it really shook me as a kid. I think it shook everyone, really. Episodes like this one are a perfect tribute to her though, alongside many SJA episodes, Stolen Earth and Journey's End. Oh and Kenny totally ended up in prison for blowing up the school. What a moron 😂

"Having a classic companion return is a great way to know you're watching new episodes of the same show." How often has this (references to classic episodes) happened since RTD left? To me, the RTD era is part of classic Who.

I'm still really peeved off that K9 seems to have been forgotten about after the RTD era. Seriously, no appearance during Matt Smith or Peter Capaldi's time as the Doctor, and still yet to appear alongside Jodie Whittaker. It's absolutely ridiculous, especially considering how Moffat nearly brought him back for Last Christmas. K9 is a hugely iconic part of the show, and should return more frequently.

they cant, the doctor gave him to Sarah Jane, so unless you want to acknowledge her death, in canon and one of the children in TSJA returns him it wont happen, or one of the doctors makes mark V
